Norwegian Cruise Line® (NCL), the industry leader in delivering freedom and choice in experiences with uncompromising hospitality, today revealed the new standout wellness and dining offerings coming to Norwegian Aura, its largest ship to date and the newest evolution of the award-winning Prima Plus Class, designed to give every guest the freedom and choice to vacation exactly how they want without compromise.

Guided by guest feedback and NCL’s brand promise that the best vacation is one where no one has to settle for less than the experiences they want most, Norwegian Aura will introduce more of what guests love to create unforgettable moments for families, couples, solo travellers and everyone in between. Additions include the industry’s most expansive Thermal Suite, featuring 15 wellness experiences designed for relaxation, recovery and rejuvenation; as well as Tamara, NCL’s first specialty restaurant dedicated to Indian cuisine and The Panorama Room, an immersive reimagining of complimentary dining at sea. Throughout the ship, favourite restaurants, bars and lounges have also been redesigned and repositioned to create more space and inviting places to gather with the ease to move from one experience to the next.

“Norwegian Aura is all about giving guests more of what they love, with spaces and experiences that make vacation feel even easier,” said Gary Anslow, Vice President UK, Ireland, Middle East and Africa, Norwegian Cruise Line. “From Tamara, our new Indian specialty restaurant, which expands the already guest-favourite eatery in Indulge to an elevated culinary offering; to The Panorama Room’s immersive dining experience and our most expansive Thermal Suite to date, every addition has been purposefully designed to give guests more freedom, choice and opportunities to relax, recharge and enjoy their vacation their way, without compromise.”

A New Era of Wellness at Sea

Spanning two decks, the Mandara Spa, beautifully designed by the Rockwell Group, will utilize the restorative power of nature to create an expansive wellness sanctuary, with spaces and experiences inspired by forest canopies, cave-like retreats, cascading waterfalls and the rhythms of nature.

At the heart of the experience is the industry’s most expansive Thermal Suite, offering 15 wellness amenities, including 11 new experiences, built around the principles of contrast therapy. Guests can move between warm and cool spaces, water features and quiet lounges to create their own relaxation routine, whether they want to unwind after a day ashore, recover from travel or simply enjoy a slower moment at sea.

Among the signature experiences is the Sensory Rain Pool, the first of its kind at sea. This immersive 360-degree experience transforms from calm waters to a tropical rainfall and eventually a dramatic thunderstorm, complete with simulated lightning effects and the sounds of rolling thunder, surrounding guests by nature in an unforgettable way.

Supporting the Thermal Suite’s contrast therapy journey are several new water and thermal offerings, including a Blue Glow Suite, a gentle blue light experience designed to encourage relaxation and support post-travel recovery; a dedicated Foot Spa, to soothe and refresh tired feet and muscles; the Waterfall Experience, where guests can unwind as water cascades over their head and shoulders; a Snow Cave, with rugged, rock-like walls layered with fresh powder white snow whose cold therapy benefits have been known to support the effects of inflammation; a Reflection Pool with panoramic sea views; and guided Hot and Cold Plunge experiences.

Guests can also enjoy a variety of dedicated relaxation spaces throughout the spa, including a Salt Room, the Meditation Lounge, an Aromatic Steam Room, a Finnish Sauna, a Charcoal Sauna and a Zen Lounge.

The spa also features 24 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, Skin Lab, and expanded medi-spa services with IV therapy, NAD+ injections (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) to support energy and overall vitality, with acupuncture also available. Additionally, the facility will include a state-of-the-art fitness center with dedicated training studios and wellness programming.

New Dining Experiences Plus Expanded Guest Favourites

Continuing NCL’s commitment to delivering more choice and variety, Norwegian Aura’s culinary program includes 22 food and beverage options spanning over 10 distinct cuisines. The offerings on board have been thoughtfully designed so guests can dine how they want, whether seeking a relaxed meal with family, a standout specialty experience or a new global flavour to discover at sea.

Making its debut aboard Norwegian Aura, Tamara will become NCL’s first specialty restaurant dedicated to Indian cuisine. Inspired by the overwhelming popularity of the Indian offerings introduced at Indulge Food Hall with the launch of the Prima Class ships, the new venue elevates those guest-favourite flavours into a dedicated dining experience featuring authentic regional dishes in a sophisticated setting inspired by the architecture and craftsmanship of North Indian temples and courtyards.

Located on Deck 8, Tamara’s design incorporates warm earth tones, intricate detailing and an open-view kitchen anchored by striking tandoor ovens, creating an inviting atmosphere that celebrates both culinary tradition and contemporary dining. Guests will enjoy authentic flavours with dishes like Short-Rib Dosa, a crisp rice-lentil crepe with tomato sambar, fenugreek and coconut chutney; Lamb Biryani, with basmati rice, warm spices and caramelised onions; and a Green Papaya Salad, tossed tableside with pomegranate, tamarind, peanuts, jaggery and chili.

Also new to Norwegian Aura is The Panorama Room, a completely reimagined complimentary dining experience that transforms traditional main dining through immersive visual technology. Located on Deck 6, the venue features expansive LED displays, multi-channel audio, synchronised lighting and dynamic visuals that evolve throughout the day and evening, transporting guests through ever-changing landscapes, artwork and scenic environments as they dine. Additionally, Hudson’s, the signature main dining room renowned for its sweeping 270-degree ocean views, will debut an elevated new design.

Beyond introducing new concepts, Norwegian Aura’s restaurant collection has been thoughtfully reconfigured for more comfort, easier access between venues and to create additional seating in some of the ship’s most popular venues. On Deck 7, guests will find Le Bistro, featuring a new design with uninterrupted ocean views, where they can enjoy timeless French cuisine; as well as Sukhothai, showcasing a refreshed design that celebrates the culture, craftsmanship and flavours of Thailand. Palomar, offering Mediterranean fare, and the Italian Onda by Scarpetta will be located on Deck 8, where the venues will benefit from expanded seating and a new aesthetic. Cagney’s Steakhouse will also receive a sophisticated redesign, pairing rich and dark colours with the classic atmosphere of a modern steakhouse. The popular Japanese specialty restaurants, Hasuki for hibachi and Nama for sushi, will also return with new decor and a lighter colour palette for a welcoming atmosphere.

Additional enhancements include an expanded Surfside Café, which will now span both sides of the vessel to create a more seamless guest experience, and the return of Indulge Food Hall, featuring nine globally inspired stations. Building on the popularity of NCL’s culinary portfolio in Indulge, guests will enjoy complimentary Mexican favourites inspired by Los Lobos, along with a new Middle Eastern concept and returning favourites including Q Texas Smokehouse, Planterie and Nudls. The Local Bar & Grill is another returning guest favourite, offering an additional complimentary dining option featuring classic pub fare nearly all day.

Guests staying at The Haven, the keycard-access only luxury complex, will enjoy a newly designed The Haven Bar and Lounge and The Haven Restaurant. Studio DADO, longtime partners of Norwegian Cruise Line, designed the private lounge, restaurant and outdoor deck to emulate a tranquil oasis that immerses guests into the world’s natural beauty with earth tones, a lush canopy of trees and delicate finishes.

More Room to Relax, Gather and Explore

Throughout Norwegian Aura, public spaces have been refreshed to feel more open, comfortable and connected, reflecting NCL’s signature hospitality with more room for guests to gather, relax and move naturally from one experience to the next on their own terms.

Bars and lounges across the ship will feature refreshed interiors and expanded layouts, including a larger Penrose Bar & Atrium with more than double the seating and a dedicated stage for daily entertainment. Guests will also enjoy the Metropolitan Bar, known for its award-winning sustainable cocktail menu; the intimate Swirl Wine Bar, a contemporary wine lounge; Belvedere Bar and Whiskey Bar, all redesigned to create more open and inviting environments for guests to gather, socialise and enjoy the ship’s vibrant onboard atmosphere. Overlooking the pool on Deck 18, the Daybreak Bar features beautiful vibrant colours and will be the perfect spot to feel a part of the action. The updates are designed to make it easier for guests to find their favourite spot, meet up with friends and enjoy the ship’s lively atmosphere from day to night.

Adventure, Action and Family Fun Awaits Aboard Nowegian Aura

Norwegian Aura will also feature Ocean Heights, the ultimate hub for fun, action and relaxation for the entire family, giving parents and kids more ways to spend quality time together without sacrificing the moments of adult enjoyment that make a vacation feel complete. The sprawling activity zone will combine brand-new NCL attractions with reimagined favourites, transforming from day to night using immersive lighting and LED projections. Adventure seekers will enjoy six slides, the 82-foot Aura Ropes Course, a multi-level obstacle course, Moon Climber, and Aura Midway featuring carnival-style games and a nine-hole mini golf course. For those looking to slow down, guests can relax at NCL’s first-ever overhanging cabanas overlooking Vibe Beach Club, and enjoy a dedicated bar.

NCL’s newest vessel will first set sail in Europe with a seven-day Mediterranean voyage from Trieste, Italy to Barcelona, Spain on May 21, 2027, followed by a 13-day transatlantic voyage to Miami.
Norwegian Cruise Line® (NCL) has announced a strategic reshaping of its International division – a move the cruise line says will deliver more cohesive, better-supported partnerships with the travel trade across its global markets.

At the heart of the restructure is the consolidation of sales and marketing under unified regional leadership. For travel agents across the MEA region, it means a single, aligned team working in step to help them sell NCL more effectively and grow their cruise business with confidence.

Leading that charge in MEA is Gary Anslow, appointed as the region’s new VP. Anslow brings considerable experience to the role, which will serve alongside his position of VP and Head of UK and Ireland, one of NCL’s most established and high-performing markets. He takes over from Kevin Bubolz, who spearheaded NCL’s growth across MEA. Bubolz will now assume full oversight of NCL’s Continental European business. Both report into Jason Krimmel, NCL’s Chief International Sales and Marketing Officer.

Commenting on the transition, Bubolz said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time leading our strategy in MEA. The engagement and support we have had from our partners in the region has been exceptional. I know Gary and the team will continue to build on very solid foundations.”

Anslow added: “MEA is a region with tremendous energy and real appetite for cruise travel, and I am committed to making sure our trade partners have everything they need to capitalise on that. I am looking forward to deepening our relationships across the region and to ensuring that agents feel the full benefit of a more integrated sales and marketing approach.”

The announcement comes at a particularly compelling moment for travel trade partners to be selling NCL. Great Stirrup Cay, the cruise line’s iconic private island in The Bahamas, is set to launch the new Great Tides Waterpark on 4 September – a significant enhancement, with 19 waterslides, unique cliff jumps, and a Tidal Tower standing over 50m tall, that adds fresh appeal for families and gives agents a powerful new conversation-starter with clients.

An impressive portfolio of 2027 Europe itineraries, including expanded Mediterranean and Northern Europe sailings, offers strong options for the well-travelled South African market, while a pipeline of innovative new ships continues to grow one of the industry’s most modern fleets.

“The investment is real, the support is growing, and the opportunities for agents who lean into cruise have never been greater,” Anslow concluded.

As the first in the cruise industry to offer the world’s most recognised coffee brand – Starbucks® – across its entire fleet and private destinations, NCL adds an all-new licensed store aboard Norwegian Jade, making it easy for guests to enjoy the same favourite hot and cold handcrafted beverages, seasonal blends and sweet and savory food items as they do at their neighborhood store.

Summer Escapes to Europe and Alaska

Now through late summer 2026, Norwegian Jade offers a series of seven-day sailings from Vancouver, British Columbia and Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska with scenic cruising through the Inside Passage and glacier regions, as well as visits to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

More than 39.5 million people are expected to cruise in 2026, and by 2028, that figure is forecast to reach 42 million. The climbing numbers come as no surprise, considering ocean cruising is now rated the highest of any holiday type for guest satisfaction – above all-inclusive resorts, hotel packages, and every other format that competes for the same traveller and the same budget.

These findings, courtesy of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) State of the Industry Report, are striking enough on their own. What makes them even more striking is the gap between that reality and the perception that still lingers in many South African households: that cruising is rigid and designed for someone older and far less adventurous than we are.

The product generating those satisfaction scores looks almost nothing like that image. And the sooner South African travellers close that gap, the sooner they access one of the most complete holiday experiences currently available anywhere in the world.

One suitcase, multiple countries, zero compromises

Ask anyone who cruises regularly why they keep coming back, and, according to CLIA, two answers will surface more than any other:

the ability to visit multiple destinations in a single trip.

the sense that they are genuinely getting value for their money.

When you examine what a seven-day Mediterranean or Caribbean itinerary actually delivers, it’s not difficult to see why.

A single sailing can take you from Barcelona to the Amalfi Coast and from a morning at the Vatican to an evening watching the sun set over Mykonos. You unpack once and sleep in the same bed every night, and the logistics (including transfers, accommodation, restaurant research, airport queues between cities) simply disappear.

What remains is the travel itself.

“Many cruise lines also offer special packages designed to extend that value further still. Take NCL’s Free at Sea and Free at Sea Plus packages for example, bundling unlimited beverages, speciality dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credits into the cost of the cruise. The appeal of knowing what’s included before you board is considerable for South African travellers accustomed to watching holiday extras accumulate into a second bill,” comments Nirosha Sidat, Country Manager for Africa at Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).

But what’s changed, and what makes the conversation about cruising more interesting than it has ever been, is that the ship is no longer simply the thing that moves you between those places. For a growing number of travellers, it has become a destination in its own right.

When the journey becomes the experience

The world’s most discerning hospitality brands have been paying close attention to what’s happening at sea. Luxury hotel groups, names synonymous with the finest land-based experiences on the planet, have begun launching their own vessels, recognising that the ship experience has evolved to rival, and in some cases surpass, what their properties can offer on shore.

“What we’re hearing consistently from South African guests is that they arrive expecting a holiday and leave having experienced something they did not anticipate. The ship itself becomes part of the story, and they talk about it the way they talk about the best hotel they’ve ever stayed in – except this one took them to five different countries,” says Sidat.

It is a shift that Sidat observes not as a trend, but as a fundamental recalibration of what travellers understand a holiday to be capable of delivering.

What a modern ship actually looks like

NCL’s newest ship, Norwegian Luna, officially launched on 4 April 2026, and she is as good an illustration as any of where cruise ship design has arrived.

Norwegian Luna belongs to NCL’s Prima Plus Class, a category of vessel built on the philosophy that space, flow, and variety are essentials rather than luxuries. She is 10% larger than her predecessors, and that additional space has been used thoughtfully: wider deck layouts that never feel crowded, expanded dining options, and a range of experiences that sit comfortably at both ends of the spectrum between thrill and tranquillity.

On the thrill end:

The Aqua Slidecoaster, the world’s first hybrid roller coaster and waterslide, which is exactly as exhilarating as it sounds.

The Glow Court, an interactive LED sports floor that transforms depending on what you’re playing.

On the tranquillity and refinement end:

The Haven, NCL’s ship-within-a-ship concept, offering a butler service, private dining, and accommodation that would not look out of place in a five-star city hotel.

Sukhothai, the first Thai restaurant at sea on any major cruise line.

Planterie, a dedicated plant-based dining venue.

Three-bedroom duplex suites for those travelling in larger groups or with family.

The result is a ship that resists easy categorisation, and that’s precisely the point. The modern cruise vessel is not built for a single type of traveller, but for the reality of how people actually holiday: in groups, across generations, with different appetites for adventure and different definitions of a perfect day at sea.

CLIA data shows that 28% of cruise travellers sail with three or more generations. That’s grandparents, parents, and children sharing the same holiday without anyone having to compromise on what they do with their time. On a ship like Norwegian Luna, a grandparent can spend the morning at a wine tasting while a teenager conquers the Aqua Slidecoaster and a couple savours a private balcony breakfast before heading ashore. Nobody is waiting for anyone, and nobody is bored.

The social architecture of a modern cruise ship is also particularly well suited for solo travellers, a segment that has grown significantly in recent years, with CLIA reporting that one in eight cruise travellers now sails alone. NCL pioneered the studio cabin specifically for solo guests – thoughtfully designed single-occupancy accommodation that does not carry the single supplement penalty that makes solo land-based travel so financially punishing.

The shore has not gone anywhere

It would be a mistake to read any of this as an argument for staying on the ship. The destination still matters deeply. What modern cruising has done is raise the quality of both sides of the equation simultaneously.

NCL’s Mediterranean itineraries, for instance, are built around extended time ashore. Late-night departures from Dubrovnik allow guests to stay for dinner in the old city and watch the sun go down over the Adriatic before returning to the ship. Extended port time in Livorno opens up full-day excursions to Florence or Pisa, and in Santorini, guests can linger for the famous sunset before sailing on. The ship does not pull you away from the destination, but it certainly gives you a better base from which to experience it.

“What I find most exciting is that we’re still in the early stages of South Africans discovering what modern cruising really offers. The guests who have sailed are coming back, and they’re bringing friends and family with them. That word of mouth is the most honest endorsement the product can receive, and it tells you everything about the experience they are having,” Sidat concludes.

The ship is the destination; the shore is the bonus. And for those who have not yet made the discovery, the timing has never been better.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, together with its longtime shipbuilding partner Fincantieri S.p.A, celebrated the float out of Norwegian Aura, marking a construction milestone for the cruise company’s largest and most illuminating vessel to date.

The float out, which took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, marks the first time Norwegian Aura touched water, signifying the completion of the ship’s external hull construction. Following this milestone, the ship’s interior development will continue progressing to the next phase ahead of her debut in the spring of 2027. To commemorate the occasion and honour maritime tradition, two ceremonial coins were welded into Norwegian Aura’s hull during a traditional coin ceremony, symbolising good fortune and safe passage for the ship, her crew and future guests.

“Norwegian Aura’s float out is a proud and meaningful moment for our entire team,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “She builds on the legacy of our award-winning Prima Class while taking our commitment to thoughtfully designed guest‑first experiences even further. Created in close partnership with Fincantieri, the ship is purposefully constructed to deliver an elevated, multi‑generational vacation experience, with expansive outdoor spaces like Ocean Heights, that brings families and friends together for fun-filled days. With her flexible, open‑air design, Norwegian Aura is exceptionally well suited for Caribbean itineraries, offering the perfect balance of high‑energy fun, relaxation and an effortless escape for guests of all ages.”

When she enters service, Norwegian Aura will set a new benchmark for NCL. Nearly 1,130 feet long and approximately 170,000 gross tons, the ship is 10% larger than her predecessors, Norwegian Aqua® and Norwegian Luna. She will feature over 1,970 well-appointed staterooms accommodating approximately 3,880 guests at double occupancy.

At the heart of Norwegian Aura’s onboard experience will be Ocean Heights, an all-new open-air activities complex designed as a true multi-generational hub. Guests can enjoy the most slides of any NCL ship, including Eclipse Racers, the Company’s first dueling waterslides; Aura Free Fall, a drop-in body waterslide that plunges guests down exhilarating twists and turns; and The Wave, a pendulum-style raft slide designed to accommodate up to four guests. Nearby, guests will discover the 82-foot Aura Ropes Course, a 25-foot rock-climbing wall, and Aura Midway, which offers easygoing fun with carnival-style games. At night, the activity zone will transform into a visual spectacle with immersive lighting and LED projections for a more relaxed, social atmosphere.

Norwegian Aura will introduce an expanded pool deck more than 20% larger than her predecessors, with additional seating, an extra hot tub, open lounge areas and a nearby Kids’ Aqua Park, creating more space for families to relax and play together. Adults seeking a quieter escape can retreat to the ever-popular Vibe Beach Club, the exclusive adults-only outdoor lounge. An enhanced Ocean Boulevard, extended by 11%, will wrap around the ship’s hull on deck eight with new hot tubs, seating and social spaces. Debuting family‑friendly hubs ensure flexible ways for guests of every generation to enjoy time together or apart with Adventure Alley for kids aged six to 10, Little Explorer’s Cove for the youngest sailors and a dedicated purpose‑built Teen Hangout.

“Norwegian Aura’s float out marks a highly symbolic and operationally significant milestone in our shared journey with Norwegian Cruise Line,” said Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of Fincantieri’s Merchant Ships Division. “This vessel reflects the strength of a long-standing partnership and our ability to turn design vision and innovation into tangible solutions, helping to redefine onboard experience for future generations of guests.”

Norwegian Aura will set sail on her maiden voyage on May 21, 2027, with a seven-day Mediterranean voyage departing from Trieste, Italy and calling to iconic ports in Italy and Malta, before embarking on a 14-day transatlantic crossing to the United States.
When Norwegian Aura calls to Great Stirrup Cay for the first time in June 2027, guests will step ashore to a fully enhanced and more accessible private island experience, supported by a new multi-ship pier, a welcome plaza, and a tram service that makes moving from ship-to-shore and around the island easier than ever. Highlights available on Great Stirrup Cay include the Great Life Lagoon, a resort-style pool area with two swim-up bars, cabanas and lounge chairs, alongside the nearby Splash Harbor, offering aquatic fun for kids. It also features the adults-only Vibe Shore Club, a private beachfront retreat with premium seating and cabanas; and the soon-to-debut Great Tides Waterpark, a nearly six-acre attraction featuring 19 waterslides, cliffside jumps, a kids’ splash zone and an immersive river experience—ensuring a seamless, flexible island day for guests of all ages, from arrival to departure.

Norwegian Cruise Line® (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, today celebrated the christening of Norwegian Luna in Miami. As the latest ship in the Company’s fleet, Norwegian Luna will offer a wide range of onboard experiences for every type of traveller and be the newest ship to call to the Caribbean with itineraries that visit both of NCL’s private island destinations, Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas and Harvest Caye in Belize.

“Norwegian Luna represents the evolution of NCL — a brand built on freedom, flexibility and delivering experiences that resonate with every type of traveller,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Curated to deliver attractions for families with the NCL-exclusive Aqua Slidecoaster, and the all-new Moon Climber and Luna Midway activities; as well as adult-only experiences like the late-night production of ‘LunaTique,’ Norwegian Luna is the perfect ship for multigenerational travellers looking for a warm vacation in the tropics. With itineraries designed to bring guests to Great Stirrup Cay, our private island in the Bahamas, they will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the highly anticipated offerings that our guests are raving about.”

With over 2,000 guests in attendance, the beloved christening ceremony – rooted in the maritime tradition of blessing a vessel before it officially begins its life at sea – took place at the Company’s LEED® Gold Certified terminal at PortMiami. Featuring a special appearance from Norwegian Luna’s godmother and hull artist, ELLE, the event concluded with the ceremonial breaking of the bottle across the ship’s hull, bestowing blessings and safe travels for all who sail upon her.

“Today’s christening of Norwegian Luna marks an important milestone for our Company and a moment of great pride for our entire team,” said John W.
In addition to her role at today’s christening ceremony, ELLE, Norwegian Luna’s godmother and renowned street artist, created the ship’s signature hull artwork – a vivid dreamscape titled ‘La Luna.’ Designed ahead of Norwegian Luna’s maiden voyage, the piece explores humanity’s enduring relationship with the cosmos and its innate connection to the moon’s rhythmic pull.

“Celebrating Norwegian Luna as the ship’s godmother is an incredible honour, and creating ‘La Luna’ has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career,” said ELLE, godmother and hull artist of Norwegian Luna. “The moon has always symbolised connection, rhythm and transformation, forces that mirror the journeys we take in our own lives. I hope every guest feels a sense of wonder and possibility as Norwegian Luna carries them toward new horizons.”
