by Rosemary Anderson, FEDHASA Inland Board Member

The latest Statistics South Africa Food & Beverage Survey (May 2026) paints a concerning picture for one of South Africa’s largest employers.

While many may view a decline of only 0.3% in real income as relatively insignificant, those operating restaurants, pubs, coffee shops and food service businesses know that these figures tell a very different story. A story restaurateurs have felt for many months – but is only now being reflected in the stats. In real terms (constant 2019 prices), food and beverage income declined by 0.3% in May 2026 compared with May 2025. Looking at the latest three-month period, food and beverage income fell by 0.2%, with restaurants and coffee shops declining by 1.7%, making them the largest contributor to the industry’s decline.

Seasonally adjusted figures tell a similar story, with income decreasing by 0.6% over the latest three months, once again driven primarily by restaurants and coffee shops.

These are not simply statistics.

They represent thousands of business owners who are working longer hours, carrying greater financial risk and employing millions of South Africans while trying simply to survive.

Turnover is Flat – Costs are Not

The greatest challenge facing the hospitality industry is that turnover has remained largely stagnant while operating costs continue to increase at unprecedented levels.

Every significant expense faced by restaurants has increased substantially over recent years, from electricity tariffs to food – to every single input cost.

For many hospitality businesses, these cost increases have far exceeded consumer inflation. In practical terms, restaurants today generally require annual revenue growth of between 10% and 15% simply to maintain the same profitability. Any increase below this often means the business is actually going backwards financially.

This is why a real decline of 0.3% is far more significant than it first appears.

Government Must Understand the Reality

The hospitality industry fully supports legislation that protects employees and customers.

However, new legislation must also be practical, affordable and proportionate.

Unfortunately, government departments often introduce new compliance requirements without fully appreciating the cumulative financial impact on businesses that already operate on extremely small profit margins. Although aimed at improving workplace health and safety, these regulations introduce additional obligations. Each of these requirements carries a cost.

For larger organisations these costs may be manageable.

For independent restaurants, cafés, pubs and family-owned food businesses already operating on margins often below 5%, every additional compliance requirement places further pressure on their viability.

No individual regulation may appear excessive in isolation. The problem is the cumulative effect.

When combined with escalating municipal charges, increasing utility costs, higher food prices, rising wages and ongoing economic uncertainty, another layer of compliance can easily become the difference between remaining open and closing permanently.

One of South Africa’s Greatest Job Creators

The irony is that restaurants are among South Africa’s greatest creators of employment. Few industries employ more people per square metre of trading space than the hospitality sector. Importantly, our industry creates employment opportunities for people from every educational background.

Restaurants provide first jobs for school leavers, opportunities for individuals with limited formal education, practical workplace training, career development and entrepreneurial opportunities. In a country where unemployment remains one of our greatest national challenges, this sector should be encouraged – not burdened. Every restaurant that closes means job losses, suppliers lose customers, farmers lose markets, local economies lose spending.

The ripple effect extends far beyond a single business.

A Different Approach is Needed

FEDHASA believes there is a better way.

Government should actively work with the hospitality industry to create an environment where businesses can grow, invest and employ more South Africans.

This includes:

Simplifying regulatory compliance for small and medium-sized hospitality businesses.

Conducting meaningful economic impact assessments before introducing new regulations.

Recognising hospitality as a strategic employment sector deserving of support.

Ending the ongoing disruption to essential bulk services that is undermining business sustainability.

Moderating above-inflation increases in rates and utility charges.

Creating incentives for businesses that expand employment and skills development.

Hospitality is an Investment in South Africa

Restaurants are far more than places where people eat – they are community gathering places, tourism attractions, training grounds for future professionals and one of the country’s most accessible entry points into employment.

The latest Statistics South Africa figures should serve as a warning.

Our industry remains resilient, innovative and optimistic.

But resilience cannot replace profitability.

If South Africa genuinely wishes to reduce unemployment, stimulate tourism and grow local economies, then the restaurant and food service sector must be recognised as a strategic partner in economic development – not simply another industry upon which additional costs and regulatory obligations can be imposed.

Supporting hospitality businesses is not merely good for the industry.

It is good for employment.

It is good for tourism.

It is good for communities.

And ultimately, it is good for South Africa.

There’s a special kind of travel satisfaction when you arrive somewhere extraordinary, knowing that no one you know has been there before. It’s not one-upmanship – rather the opportunity to discover something for the first time and share your impressions with family and friends.

In 2026, that feeling is increasingly hard to find. Bali is getting busier by the day, Santorini is feeling the pressure of the summer cruise ship calendar, and even Lisbon – once considered Portugal’s hidden gem – now has snaking queues for a decent pastéis de nata.

Look a little closer, though, and you’ll find alternative destinations that deliver everything that draws travellers to the Mediterranean and beyond: warm water, exceptional food, and real adventure – usually at a fraction of the cost and without the crowds. And increasingly, it’s becoming even easier to reach these destinations.

Take Airlink’s new Johannesburg–Nacala service (launched February 2026), which opens up northern Mozambique, for example. As well as LATAM’s new non-stop route between Cape Town and São Paulo (launching July 2026), suddenly putting South America firmly on the Saffa radar.

“We’re seeing a real shift in what our clients are asking for,” says Sue Garrett, GM Supply, Pricing & Marketing at Flight Centre South Africa. “They still want an unforgettable, bucket-list experience – but they want it without the crowds. They want to feel like they found something special. And right now, there’s genuine opportunity to do exactly that.”

Fancy an out-of-the-ordinary travel experience? Here are five destinations worth a serious look.

Kefalonia, Greece

On the Ionian side of Greece, Kefalonia offers everything the Cyclades promise without the crowds: turquoise coves like Myrtos and Antisamos, sleepy harbour towns, and vineyards producing crisp Robola whites found nowhere else. While Santorini and Mykonos strain under the weight of their own popularity, Kefalonia feels more relaxed even at the height of summer.

“Kefalonia does have a summer peak, but since it’s the largest of the Ionian Islands, its size and varied terrain help absorb the crowds, allowing visitors to find quieter spots, enchanting beaches, and friendly, local tavernas,” says Garrett. “It’s still part of the Schengen zone, but for South Africans already budgeting for that admin, it delivers a beautiful Greek island experience.”

Top tip: Kefalonia is a big island, so hire a car and spend a few days both on the north and south sides of the island. Staying in both regions drastically cuts down on long, winding drives and allows you to explore different sites and beaches in the most relaxed way possible. Pack water shoes for the pebbly beaches and ask locals where to find the best swimming spots – as some of the more famous beaches have strong currents and undertows.

Albania’s Riviera

A short, high-speed ferry trip from Corfu gets you to Sarandë, and from there, it’s just a twelve-kilometre drive south to Ksamil, where some of Albania’s most beautiful beaches rival anything in the region. Inland, the Roman ruins of Butrint and the impossibly blue spring known as the “Blue Eye” add a bit of interest and adventure to beach time.

Yes, Albania still feels basic – bus timetables are informal and cash is king, but that’s exactly what makes it feel genuinely undiscovered. Albania sits outside the Schengen zone (South Africans will need an e-Visa via the government portal) and is following almost exactly the same trajectory Croatia took a decade ago, then Montenegro more recently. In other words, it won’t stay this quiet for much longer.

Top tip: Bring Euros. While the local currency is the Albanian lek, most tourist businesses and accommodations readily accept Euros at a set rate. Keep a few handy as many of Ksamil’s beaches are private, so you’ll need to pay for access, a lounger, and beach umbrella.

Georgia’s wine country

Tucked between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, Georgia is the birthplace of wine, with an 8,000-year-old qvevri winemaking tradition in the Kakheti region. Tbilisi mixes cobbled old-town streets and sulphur bathhouses with a restaurant scene that has earned serious international attention, while the Alazani Valley delivers vineyards, medieval watchtowers, and near total quiet. The rand goes a long way here, covering excellent guesthouses and meals that would cost considerably more with a French label attached, and South Africans can enter visa-free for up to a year.

Top tip: Book lunch or dinner a couple of days in advance, especially at smaller, family-run estates, as independent winemakers often only prepare meals for those who book ahead. Oh, and pay a visit to Sighnaghi, Georgia’s own “City of Love”!

Uzbekistan’s Silk Road cities

Samarkand’s Registan Square, with its turquoise domes and towering gateways, is one of those sights that photographs simply cannot prepare you for, yet it remains filed under “someday” for most South African travellers. The Silk Road triangle of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva now forms a manageable, well-supported itinerary, with Bukhara’s old city still functioning as a living town of carpet workshops and spice bazaars, not a museum piece. Costs on the ground remain low, and the region’s high-speed bullet trains save you from long, bumpy car rides.

Top tip: Uzbekistan’s high-speed rail tickets go on sale exactly 45 days before departure and sell out within minutes, so create an account on the official Uzbekistan Railways website or app in advance and be ready to book the moment your travel dates open.

Argentina: Buenos Aires

Argentina slipped off the radar when SAA discontinued its direct flights to Buenos Aires back in 2014. But with the LATAM São Paulo–Cape Town route launching in September, the magic of Buenos Aires – tango, literature, grand European-style architecture, an outstanding café and steakhouse culture – is back within easy reach. Unfortunately, says Garrett, Argentina is not as affordable as it once was.

“South Africans feel right at home in Buenos Aires’ legendary parillas (steakhouses), especially with a glass of Malbec in hand! The architectural beauty of the city, complete with grand boulevards and bustling sidewalk cafés, really is something special,” says Garrett. “But if you’re looking for more value for money, consider Colombia – both Medellín and Cartagena offer extraordinary experiences, and both are also back in play thanks to LATAM’s new route.”

Top tip: Buenos Aires – a three-hour flight from São Paulo – is packed with personality. The best way to experience it? On a private city tour or local-led food tour. You’ll get a sense of the city’s best neighbourhoods and quickly fall in love with everything on offer.

“The travellers who come back from a holiday feeling the most energised are usually the ones who took a chance on somewhere they had to explain to their friends and family… and returned with stories they’ll be telling those same loved ones about for years,” Garrett concludes.

In 2026, those places still exist. The question is simply whether you find them before everyone else does.

The centrepiece of this occasion is Wine Town Stellenbosch, which brings together wine producers, restaurants, accommodation establishments and visitors for nine days of exceptional wine and food experiences across the region, from 25 July to 2 August.

This year’s programme also incorporates the milestone anniversary through a number of special experiences, collaborations and anniversary events.

Whether you’re a regular to the region or a complete newbie, Wine Town Stellenbosch and the Stellenbosch Wine Festival will be worth your while, serving up outstanding experiences and rare tastings. Best of all – the event prides itself on pitching the broadest insight to Stellenbosch lifestyle, to experienced connoisseurs, newcomers and everyone in between, and completely over-delivering on value.

If you’ve ever wanted an all-encompassing way to learn about South Africa’s capital of wine and experience the Stellenbosch lifestyle, Wine Town Stellenbosch is it. All in all, this is the attraction: the chance to stay and enjoy the setting of street cafés, galleries, luxurious stays, vineyards, outdoor adventures, a pedestrian-friendly town and most memorable food and wine.

Wine Town Stellenbosch comprises a nine-day programme of experiences taking place across the region that culminates in the Stellenbosch Wine Festival, an all-inclusive walk-around tasting at the City of Oaks’ historic town hall. On offer are specialised wine tours, workshops and curated vertical tastings as well as winemaker lunches and dinners, specials at restaurants around town and tastings hosted exclusively for the run of the event.

Wine Town officially gets underway on Saturday, 25 July, with an inaugural Wine Town Run/Walk at Dornier Wine Estate, hosted in partnership with Runventure. Participants can choose between a scenic run or walk over 10km or 5km through the vineyards.

As part of the 55th anniversary, Stellenbosch Wine Routes has also introduced Celebrate With Us, a special Wine Town campaign in partnership with selected restaurants. Diners will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of Stellenbosch wine with their meal, inviting guests to raise a toast to over half a decade of exceptional wines, memorable dining and the stories shared around social tables.

The programme, with detailed information for bookings and prices, is available now at https://winetown.wineroute.co.za/.

Wine events for everyone

A host of events is on offer during Wine Town Stellenbosch, and all are popular. If you’re keen to go, best to book early as reservations are limited.

Wilder as die Wildtuin brings together chefs Bertus Basson, Drikus Brink and Michael Fuller for an extraordinary nod to South African venison, featuring game personally hunted by Bertus, paired with Stellenbosch wines and hosted alongside the winemakers for an unforgettable evening of storytelling, food and wine.

Take a Journey into Chenin Blanc, exploring the nuance of terroir at DeMorgenzon Wine Estate. DeMorgenzon’s predominantly south-facing vineyards create cooler microclimates that give rise to finely poised, ethereal Chenin Blanc — and this daily tasting experience is a chance to explore exactly why.

Discover the magic of Muratie during its Retro Rouge Winter Wine Fest. This much-loved get-together is a celebration of Muratie’s history through vintage wine, featuring food, wine, smooth company and live music.

Simonsig hosts Vintage Day where many of its older wines are available for tasting and buying. This year, marks the 55thanniversary of its Kaapse Vonkel, to be celebrated with food, wine and live music. Simonsig’s winemakers spend days tasting and selecting the wines to showcase, with only vintages at the peak of their maturation making the cut.

Sip and Paint Experience at Clos Malverne Restaurant while looking at wine from a different perspective! Enjoy a relaxed, creative afternoon pairing canvas and brushes with Clos Malverne’s wines. Guidance and all painting essentials are included.

Delheim Wine Estate puts on its Live Music and Cheese Fondue Sundays in its cosy downstairs tasting cellar where snug with low ceilings and rustic, candlelit tables set the scene for families and friends to huddle around fondue pots, with the cheese swirled to an authentic Swiss recipe. Live music keeps it all in festive mood.

Morgenster, one of the Helderberg’s historic estates, hosts a fun, midweek Quiz Night. Teams of six go head-to-head over a night of trivia and wine. It’s a sociable way to experience Morgenster beyond the tasting room, with the estate’s refined Italian-influenced setting providing a memorable backdrop.

Join Narina Cloete, Blaauwklippen winemaker celebrating a decade with the estate this year, for brunch at one of Stellenbosch’s oldest farms. The event offers a rare opportunity to sit down with the person behind the wines, ask questions, and enjoy a meal in exceptional company.

All the info on the Stellenbosch Wine Festival

The highlight of Wine Town Stellenbosch and the region’s annual calendar is Stellenbosch Wine Festival. The historic event and South Africa’s oldest of its kind, has been held in various formats since the early 1970s.

It takes place over two days – Friday, 31 July (17h00–21h00) and Saturday, 1 August (14h00–18h00) – and brings together over 60 producers and more than 200 wines under one roof.

From ship to shore, today’s cruises offer an unforgettable cultural journey

When Nirosha Sidat, Country Manager (Africa) for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), observes that “more and more guests are looking for an experience rather than booking a destination”, she’s describing a fundamental shift in how today’s passengers travel by sea. Modern cruises are no longer a floating hotel that deposits you at famous landmarks – they’re a bridge connecting onboard experiences with the living, breathing communities that make each port so distinctive.

For South African travellers it’s a compelling way to see the world, one where you embrace lifelong learning, explore like a local and dine like a king.

And it’s not limited to expedition-style cruises with resident botanists, biologists or historians on board either. Your 2026 cruise to the Med, Eastern Europe or the Caribbean might just offer far more than meets the eye.

Balancing luxury and learning

The age of the “floating hotel” is giving way to a more profound travel philosophy. Cruise lines are expertly balancing the traditional allure of a luxury holiday with an increasing demand for intellectual and cultural enrichment. Guests are not merely spectators (gazing out from the bow or lazing at the pool); they are active participants in a journey of discovery. This trend of “immersive travel,” or deeply understanding a destination by slowing down and getting a real taste of its local culture, is gaining significant popularity.

But what does this actually look like on board? Sidat explains that cruises now include expert-led lectures, documentaries and workshops.

“It’s about combining the thrill of exploring new horizons with the quiet satisfaction of learning something new. It could be lectures on history, language or geology or even hands-on art workshops and cooking classes. Each designed to enrich your understanding of a destination – and enhance shore excursions.”

Cultural dining

While expansive breakfasts and family-friendly buffets are still an important part of the cruise experience, specialist restaurants and guest chefs are now firmly on the menu. For Sidat, it’s a celebration of global flavours and local heritage – one that allows guests to embark on a gastronomic adventure linked to the regions they visit.

This means that a Mediterranean cruise might offer locally sourced menus and regional dishes, or a Caribbean voyage may feature flavours that echo vibrant island culture.

NCL’s Free at Sea package – now back by popular demand – gives guests unparalleled value. For example, on a standard seven-night cruise, Free at Sea delivers: unlimited open bar with premium spirits, 150 minutes of high-speed internet, shore credits and three multi-course specialty dining experiences for the first and second guest on the reservation.

And there is plenty to choose from, including premium steakhouses, French bistros, hibachi-style venues, authentic Italian cuisine and so much more.

“Our Free at Sea package covers what matters most to guests,” says Sidat. “Yes, that means a comprehensive drinks package and free Wi-Fi, but it also makes cultural exploration that more accessible, enriching and affordable!”

Go local

Of course, it all culminates in extraordinary shore excursions. The kind facilitated by local guides, allowing guests to fully engage with indigenous communities, explore natural wonders, and visit areas that were once considered out of reach for the typical cruise tourist.

Turkey, for example, brings the opportunity to cross two continents in one day, wander Istanbul’s ancient neighbourhoods, rest beneath a 700-year-old plane tree and taste Kanlica’s legendary yoghurt – sweet, simple, unforgettable – before the ship calls you back.

In Santorini you might find yourself sipping coffee in Pyrgos, wandering Megalochori’s winding alleys and cobbled lanes, before making music at the Museum of Musical Instruments (where you’ll learn how bouzoukis are handcrafted and try playing one yourself). Best of all? You can cap it off at generations-old Gavalas Winery, tasting traditional wine perfectly paired with local meze.

Slovenia, meanwhile, promises a fragrant herb garden on a 19th-century farm – and traditional Slovenian dishes shared over local stories and sweeping views.

Time to explore

Importantly, today’s cruises also give you plenty of free time to explore new ports and vibrant cities.

Sidat explains that NCL sails from many of Europe’s most iconic cities, including Barcelona, Lisbon, Portugal, Rome, Athens, Copenhagen, Denmark and others.

“In 2026, NCL will have nine ships sailing across the Med, Greek Isles and North Europe regions, including Norwegian Viva, one of our newest ships,” says Sidat. “These itineraries let you explore multiple countries in a single voyage, with extended port stays that give you real time to discover culturally rich destinations.”

Authenticity, artistry, and flavour without equal.

Stellenbosch, Western Cape – 27 August 2025: This September, Stellenbosch is not claiming the title of South Africa’s Food & Wine Capital. It is reminding everyone why it holds it. Taste Stellenbosch is a month-long, valley-wide celebration of the destination’s enduring culinary excellence, cellar-door mastery and innovative spirit. From award-winning restaurants and trailblazing chefs to historic vineyards and pioneering wine estates, Stellenbosch continues to set the standard for taste, creativity and hospitality.

From 1–30 September 2025, over 30 of the region’s restaurants are dishing up spring offers that’ll make you weak at the knees. Expect a feast of tasting menus, chef’s tables, and seasonal platters that reflect a deep connection to place, people and produce.

Taste Stellenbosch and See Why the Food & Wine Capital Reigns Supreme 9

Daniël Kriel, Chairman of Taste Stellenbosch, believes Stellenbosch has earned its stripes as the perfect destination for both casual foodies and serious gastronomes.

“Our exceptional culinary offering has developed over generations and is built on history and heritage, creating a depth and richness that is unique. This is very similar to the development of the great wines from this region – and in Stellenbosch food and wine go hand in hand,” says Kriel. “No wonder this region is regarded as SA’s food and wine capital.”

For Kriel, this depth and richness is evident in the wide range of dining options, styles and experiences on offer. “Visitors are spoiled for choice. In Stellenbosch you can find everything – from authentic samosas to gourmet burgers to internationally acclaimed fine dining establishments. The local restaurant industry caters for every taste, budget and mood.”

“Whether on one of the wine farms, on a pavement under the oaks or inside one of our vibrant casual eateries, the golden thread that binds this diverse offering together is food prepared with passion and love!” says Kriel. “This is what our sponsors have also realised. We are excited to have Capitec on board for the campaign in September.”

“It’s awesome to be part of something that backs local businesses and shines a light on the stories behind Stellenbosch’s impressive culinary scene,” says JJ Booysen, Head: SME Payment Acceptance at Capitec.

September’s Culinary Showstoppers

Throughout Taste Stellenbosch, the variety and calibre of experiences on offer reflect why the town’s flavour truly reigns supreme:

Dusk, fresh from earning a coveted three-star rating from Eat Out, has created an Odyssey Tasting Menu that’s best described as culinary poetry. New dishes, seasonal ingredients, and pairings that’ll redefine what you thought possible.

Jordan Restaurant with Marthinus Ferreira is serving up temptation on a plate – a 250g sirloin with Café de Paris butter, hand-cut fries, fresh chef’s salad and a glass of their exquisite Jordan the Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon 2019.

The Garden Restaurant at Delheim invites guests to experience their intriguing “Kurktafel” which includes a 2.5 km walk between the estate’s fynbos, a three-course heritage menu and a reserve wine tasting. Fresh air and flavours combining for a perfect lunch in the vineyards.

Lievland Vineyards is laying on the love at their Lievland Café with a spring brunch from 8am to 11.30am every day – perfect for alfresco catch-ups with family and friends (made more perfect by their delightful collection of ‘mismatched animals’ grazing in the paddocks beyond).

Spek & Bone is making Tuesdays and Saturdays the most coveted nights in Stellenbosch with 50% off their legendary Chef’s set menu. This lively wine bar, tucked away in a hidden courtyard lit with fairy lights, serves up bold-flavoured tapas that’ll have you questioning why you eat anywhere else. This is your chance to experience their famous seven-plate journey at half the price – because exceptional dining shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions.

Dewarenmarkt is dedicating the entire month of September to celebrating one of the Cape’s most treasured indigenous ingredients – the waterblommetjie. Every single day, they’re transforming this delicate water flower into culinary art with Waterblommetjie & Sorrel Soup, crispy Waterblommetjie Tempura, and their signature Waterblommetjie Bredie with lamb knuckle. It’s a daily love letter to Stellenbosch’s deep-rooted food heritage!

Klein Joostenberg Bistro is pulling out all the stops for what they’re calling “the best, boldest brunch in the Boland” – butchers, bakers, and chefs combining forces under the guidance of Garth Bedford and Christophe Dehosse on Friday, 19 September.

“This is just a small amuse-bouche of what Stellenbosch has planned,” says Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch.

Taste Stellenbosch and See Why the Food & Wine Capital Reigns Supreme 10

“A wide range of Stellenbosch’s favourite coffee shops and eateries are also participating alongside recognised names like Bertus Basson’s Chorus, Kantien and Eike,” says Liebenberg. “It’s an exciting time to visit. Restaurants like Jordan and Dusk are receiving international acclaim, young, up-and-coming chefs are making their mark, and local gems are waiting to be discovered. Taste Stellenbosch gives visitors the chance to experience all of this in one unforgettable month.”

The Chefs Are Talking

Bertus Basson agrees:

“Taste Stellenbosch celebrates what already makes Stellenbosch special – its community of passionate chefs, winemakers and artisans who have been creating extraordinary experiences for years,” says Basson. “Food has this incredible power to bring people together and tell the story of a place.”

Perfect Timing for the Perfect Destination

Spring in Stellenbosch is a celebration in itself, with warm days, fresh seasonal produce and a calendar that blends vineyard life with world-class dining. For food lovers seeking authentic experiences and travellers who believe the best way to understand a destination is through its cuisine, Taste Stellenbosch is the ultimate way to savour the capital of flavour, one unforgettable plate and glass at a time.

Wine tourism is experiencing an unprecedented boom, with the global market set to more than triple from $108.3 billion to a staggering $358.6 billion in the next 10 years.

Alongside impressive growth, the sector is undergoing a significant renaissance as wine routes around the world transform their traditional offerings – moving far beyond the conventional tasting room model.

“Gone are the days of simple cellar door tastings,” says Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa. “Today’s estates are crafting experiences and excursions that blend adventure and appreciation. The result? A fierce competition to create the most unforgettable wine experiences on earth.”

And wine lovers are paying attention. Here’s a small selection of 2025’s top wine experiences – in both iconic and off-the-beaten-track locations around the world.

Mendoza, Argentina

Argentina’s Malbec trail takes wine tourism to astronomical heights – literally. In Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards, visitors can now combine Argentina’s world-famous Malbec with some of the planet’s clearest night skies. An exclusive wine and stargazing experience pairs private astronomy sessions with local experts alongside a moonlit tasting among the vines, complete with artisanal cheese platters and a canopy of stars.

Although there are no direct flights from South Africa to Argentina, SAA’s new direct flights to São Paulo, Brazil, make onward connections to Buenos Aires fairly straightforward, and with no visa required, wine enthusiasts can freely explore not just Mendoza, but also the historic regions of Salta and La Rioja, each boasting centuries of winemaking tradition across Argentina’s stunning Andean landscapes.

Kotor, Montenegro

More and more South Africans are waking up to the wonders of Montenegro. Located on Europe’s beautiful Balkan peninsula, Montenegro offers a more tranquil, budget-friendly experience compared to Croatia.

“Montenegro is known for its stunning coastline, warm water, charming villages, food, history and culture,” says Turner. “If you’re looking for a European summer holiday – minus the price tag – Montenegro needs to be on your list.”

And if you’re looking for a very different wine experience, head to Kotor, where Montenegro’s first and only underwater wine cellar began aging wines on the seabed in 2021. The underwater aging process accelerates wine maturation, gives the bottles a distinctive appearance (as marine life attaches to them during their time on the ocean floor), and gives visitors a relaxed afternoon on a floating wine bar – complete with fresh fish and impromptu dips in the Adriatic Sea!

Tuscany, Italy

Tenuta Torciano near San Gimignano dishes up a magical pairing of wine and truffles. Perfect for foodies, the estate offers an authentic truffle hunting experience (think truffle dogs, olive groves, vineyards and rolling countryside) followed by a wine tasting – where visitors learn more about ancient truffle-hunting traditions and winemaking while enjoying the fruits of their labour! In fact, Tenuta Torciano offers 45 different experiences, which means you can choose from horse-riding adventures to pasta-making classes – all accompanied by a glass of Tuscany’s best.

Napa Valley, California, United States

Much like Franschhoek’s famous Wine Tram, the Napa Valley’s Wine Trolley trundles between a selection of the valley’s award-winning wineries. Scenic views from the open-sided trolley (a repurposed San Francisco cable car), commentary from a guide, and a gourmet picnic lunch top off the experience – which also includes a visit to Castello di Amorosa, giving serious 4th century Tuscan castle vibes in the heart of California’s wine country. This is Napa on a plate, and lucky travellers get to taste the region’s wines, olive oil and other artisanal products along the way!

Swan Valley, Western Australia

Australia’s wine regions are legendary: Barossa Valley, Margaret River, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Hunter Valley, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, and Yarra Valley to name a few.

But not only is Swan Valley (about 30 minutes northeast of Perth) WA’s oldest wine region, it’s also the only place you can enjoy a “Bush Tucker Tasting” – learning about local Indigenous food and culture with Noongar Elder, Dale Tilbrook. It’s wine paired with storytelling paired with local ingredients foraged on Noongar land.

“Qantas launches a brand-new direct route between Johannesburg and Perth in December,” says Turner. “And with South African Airways already flying non-stop five times a week, travelling ‘down under’ is easier than ever before.”

Bonnievale, South Africa

Chardonnay lovers, take note: Weltevrede Wine Estate’s two-hour guided chardonnay walk takes you deep underground to experience the estate’s history, art and wine on a candlelit cellar tour like no other. This unforgettable tasting journey explores the region’s unique terroir – and why Weltevrede is dedicated to producing world-class chardonnay. It’s perfect for both Chardonnay devotees (you’ll get to sample three of the estate’s extraordinary wines, Place of Rocks, Calcrete and Poet’s Prayer) and curious wine lovers wanting to understand why this grape variety has captured hearts and palates worldwide. And for those looking for something completely different, why not try your hand at creating, corking and labelling your bottle of Cap Classique? Made from the farm’s famous chardonnay grapes, of course!

When it comes to wine tourism, Turner believes that South Africa more than holds its own against the likes of Argentina, Chile, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the US.

“South Africa is most famous for the Western Cape’s Winelands, stretching from Constantia all the way up the Garden Route, but we have incredible estates in the Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal too,” says Turner. “Domestic travellers need to discover Bezalel Wine & Brandy Estate between the Green Kalahari towns of Upington and Keimoes, or Highgate Wine Estate, Abingdon Wine Estate and Cathedral Peak Wine Estate in KZN – all producing wine in the shadow of the Drakensberg!”

A fresh chapter in culinary direction – with women leading the way

5 June 2025, CAPE TOWN: Pullman Cape Town has appointed Melissa Stevens as its new Executive Chef – a move that reinforces the hotel’s growing reputation as one of the city’s most food-forward hospitality brands.

With years of experience in some of South Africa’s most notable kitchens, including at Morgenster Estate, Stevens will step into her new role leading all culinary operations across the Pullman Cape Town property, from curated events to everyday dining experiences.

“My cooking has always been about comfort and connection,” says Stevens. “This role is an opportunity to bring that philosophy into an iconic space, with menus that evolve with seasonality while staying rooted in both simplicity and bold flavour.”

Her arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Pullman Cape Town’s food & beverage identity, which has continued to evolve since its inception in 2023. For example, the hotel recently opened Konnichiwa (a Japanese-style sushi bar already drawing local regulars) and participated in Restaurant Week South Africa.

“Melissa brings a balance of technical talent and warmth, as well as creativity and strong leadership into our kitchen,” says Raynor Damons, Director of Food and Beverage at Pullman Cape Town. “She represents exactly where we’re going: premium hospitality led by real people doing meaningful work – especially women.”

Pullman Cape Town currently employs more women than men across its team – including several heads of department – making it well-positioned to support Accor’s Global commitment to gender equity through initiatives like #SheLeads. The programme celebrates inclusive leadership across Africa and the Middle East by spotlighting diverse voices shaping tomorrow’s hospitality landscape.

“As Cape Town grows its reputation on the global stage, we’re evolving with it – not just through design or service, but through who leads our spaces,” added Damons. “Our vision is rooted in inclusion. We believe diverse teams create richer experiences for everyone who walks through our doors.”

With brand-new menus being rolled out under Stevens’ guidance this season, guests won’t have to wait long to get a taste of what she brings to the table.

From elevated all-day dining at Stratus Room to handcrafted cocktails at Ghibli Bar & Rooftop Terrace and sushi-forward plates at Konnichiwa Lounge, Pullman Cape Town continues to strengthen its position as one of the city’s most dynamic hospitality and culinary destinations. The hotel also offers seven fully flexible meeting and event spaces, making it a preferred choice for those looking to balance business with lifestyle in the heart of Cape Town.

Reservations for Stratus Room can be made via Dineplan. The restaurant is open from 06h30 – 22h00 daily.

##

About Pullman

Pullman Hotels & Resorts sets a new tempo in global travel and living, delivering an inspiring, energizing and enriching experience to new entrepreneurs.
A groundbreaking collaboration connecting a proudly Zambian airline with a local, sustainable coffee brand

Proflight Zambia is taking responsible tourism to new heights with the introduction of Kasama Coffee – now available onboard select flights and soon to be rolled out to all Proflight Zambia flights This 100% Zambian-grown coffee, cultivated at Kansato Farms in Kasama, is more than just a new inflight beverage – it’s an example of how aviation can support local producers, drive economic upliftment, and offer travellers a meaningful connection to the places they visit.

A Model for Responsible Tourism in Southern Africa’s Aviation Industry

As Southern Africa’s aviation industry evolves, partnerships like this prove that airlines can do more than transport passengers – they can support local businesses, preserve cultural identity, and make travel more purposeful.

“More than ever, travellers want to know that their journey has a positive impact,” says Josias Walubita, Director of Flight Operations at Proflight Zambia.

“As Zambia’s leading airline, we are committed to uplifting local businesses and showcasing the best of Zambia to the world. Kasama Coffee isn’t just any coffee – it’s a story of sustainability, community impact and Zambian innovation. By serving it onboard, we’re connecting passengers to something truly meaningful.”

ProFlight Zambia also plays a pivotal role in promoting travel to Zambia’s Northern Province – with Kasama and the Northern Waterfall Circuit now more accessible to international travellers via Proflight’s Johannesburg and Cape Town routes, which connect through Lusaka. This partnership strengthens regional tourism connections while ensuring that economic benefits flow directly into Zambian communities.

Kasama Coffee: A Brand Built on Community & Ethical Farming

Founded in Zambia’s Northern Province, Kasama Coffee is rooted in sustainable farming and job creation.

At Kansato Farms, the founder of Kasama Coffee, Luke Powell, has chosen an approach that prioritises people over machines, ensuring that local communities directly benefit from the thriving coffee industry.

“We don’t use tractors or mechanical machinery where we can avoid it – we make jobs to put food on plates,” says Luke. “From land preparation- digging the trenches and holes for planting to slashing weeds, turning compost piles and fertilising, it’s all done by hand, creating employment for over 50 people full-time and hundreds more during harvest season.”

This focus on manual farming techniques and sustainability allows Kasama Coffee to cultivate high-quality beans while providing economic stability to families in one of Zambia’s most remote regions.

Even the coffee’s packaging is part of this community-first philosophy. Kasama Coffee’s cloth coffee bags are sewn locally by a community member who was supporting orphaned children. Today, this initiative has grown into small businesses, sustaining livelihoods for many locals in the area.

“When we started growing coffee, it wasn’t just about selling a product – it was about creating jobs, protecting the environment, and ensuring our success benefited the people around us,” explains Luke.

Kasama Coffee uses an innovative approach to sustainability, including:

Organic, regenerative farming techniques like inoculating seeds with beneficial fungi strains found in Ethiopian highlands and using specially formulated composts that help restore soil health and greatly reduce the need for artificial fertilisers.

Kansato Farms incorporates Dr Carey Reams RBTI Brix method to monitor and maximise tree health, thus eliminating the need for chemicals to control diseases.

Integrating indigenous trees into the coffee fields allows birds like ground hornbills to take up residence, preserving biodiversity.

Artisanal roasting is done locally, reducing the carbon footprint of exporting raw beans for processing elsewhere.

Packaging is locally sourced and handmade, reducing plastic and supporting community employment.

The Role of Airlines in Driving Responsible Tourism

This collaboration between Proflight Zambia and Kasama Coffee is more than just an inflight service enhancement – it’s a blueprint for how aviation can unlock lasting benefits for local economies. In an era when sustainability and authentic local experiences shape traveller choices, Proflight Zambia is leading the way in demonstrating how airlines can align with homegrown businesses to create economic opportunities while reducing reliance on imported goods.

“This is the future of aviation and tourism,” says Josias. “It’s important that local products are given the chance to thrive. Having a truly Zambian coffee on a truly Zambian airline is a big step in that direction.”

The success of this initiative serves as a model for other airlines in Southern Africa looking to integrate local, sustainable products into their supply chains. By investing in regional businesses, airlines can reduce their carbon footprints and ensure economic benefits remain within their countries.

A Taste of Zambia in the Skies

For travellers onboard Proflight Zambia, Kasama Coffee represents more than just a hot cup of filter coffee – it’s a connection to Zambia’s land, people, and culture.

“When people drink our coffee on board, I want them to feel connected to Zambia – to know that their purchase supports farmers, workers, and communities in one of the most remote parts of Africa,” says Luke.

With this initiative, Proflight Zambia is proving that aviation can be a force for positive change – connecting travellers to destinations and the communities and industries that define them.

Josias adds: “Kasama Coffee is just the beginning of how we plan to continue integrating locally made products into our inflight experience. We’re proud to lead the way in responsible tourism and sustainable aviation.”

Tourism Seychelles has successfully concluded a strategic media briefing in Johannesburg, South Africa, where Principal Secretary Sherin Francis presented the destination’s dynamic vision for 2025, highlighting significant developments set to enhance the archipelago’s tourism offering.

The exclusive breakfast session, held at Proud Mary Modern Eatery + Wine Bar in Rosebank, brought together key South African media representatives for an insightful discussion on Seychelles’ future developments and upcoming major events.

During the session, Mrs. Francis unveiled several landmark initiatives, including new luxury hotel developments, an extensive collection of boutique properties and small homegrown products, as well as the new Seychelles Tourism Grading Programme, reinforcing Seychelles’ commitment to maintaining its position as a premier holiday destination.

Among the key highlights of the presentation were discussions surrounding Seychelles’ sporting calendar for the year ahead. Mrs. Francis provided details regarding the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, alongside signature events such as the Seychelles Sailing Challenge and the Seychelles Nature Trail, positioning the destination as a hub for world-class sporting events.

The Tourism Seychelles team also seized the opportunity to generate excitement for the upcoming 40th Festival Kreol in October 2025. Mrs. Francis mentioned that the country is committed to ensuring it remains one of the most iconic events on the Seychelles socio-cultural calendar every year, making sure to engage visitors and keep the festival top of mind.

“Our engagement with the South African media market is crucial as we continue to strengthen our presence in this key region,” said Mrs. Francis. “The exciting developments and events planned for 2025 will enhance our tourism offering while creating significant opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth in our islands.”

The briefing also showcased new cultural experiences designed to offer visitors authentic encounters with Seychellois heritage, responding to the growing demand for meaningful travel experiences.

This media engagement forms part of Tourism Seychelles’ broader strategy to maintain strong relationships with key market partners and ensure consistent, high-quality communication about the destination’s offerings and developments.

Tourism Seychelles anticipates that these initiatives will contribute significantly to the destination’s appeal, particularly in the South African market, which remains a vital source of visitors for the islands.

Seychelles’ vibrant Creole cuisine – a fusion of African, Indian, French, and Chinese influences – took centre stage in South Africa this week. Chef Bradley Larue led exclusive cooking workshops at The Cooking Studio in Randburg on 22 October and at Makers Landing in Cape Town on 23 October 2024, offering local journalists and food enthusiasts the chance to taste and experience the cultural richness of the islands through its food. Under the masterful guidance of Larue, an acclaimed Seychellois chef, guests cooked up exciting meals that reflected the colours, spices, and spirit of Seychelles.

“The aim of these sessions was to transport participants to the heart of Seychelles. Food is such an integral part of our identity, and this was an invitation to share that connection,” said Larue.

Throughout the session, Larue helped guests prepare a variety of dishes, ranging from traditional curries to grilled seafood, while explaining the significance of each dish within Seychelles’ fascinating blend of cultures, comprising African, French, Indian, and Chinese influences.

The cooking classes also served as a platform to promote Seychelles as a prime holiday destination for South Africans seeking tropical flavours, pristine beaches, and incredible cultural experiences – just an effortless five-hour flight away.

Jennifer van Rooyen of Travel Ideas attended the event and shared: “It was such an amazing way to get a little closer to Seychelles – a unique and fun introduction to the islands.”

The success of these cooking classes underscores how cultural exchanges create meaningful connections and build curiosity about a destination.
