In 2025, we saw the rise of ‘coolcations’ (as travellers tried to avoid Europe’s summer heatwave), multi-generational travel, cruises and all things ‘all-inclusive’. But this year, the trends seem strangely specific and delightfully niche.

Zay Ferguson-Nair, Customer Experience Leader at Flight Centre South Africa, notes how Flight Centre’s Travel Experts are seeing a shift towards more hyper-personalised travel experiences.

“Yes, travellers have always booked trips that satisfy an interest or passion, whether it’s a birding safari or a bucket-list trip to see the northern lights. This year, it’s just expanded into unexpected territory,” she explains. “Think travellers who plan their journeys around beauty brands, skincare and wellness – or grocery store tourism, which caught everyone off guard! In 2026, travel is about indulging very specific obsessions.”

1. Glowcations

Korean beauty (K-beauty) brands have garnered a massive, dedicated following due to their innovative formulations and ‘glass skin’ results, with Korea’s capital, Seoul, fast becoming the home of glowing skin and cutting-edge (never mind TikTok-trendy) treatments.

The latest trend reports refer to ‘glomads’ (a predominantly young cohort of travellers who build their holidays around beauty brands and regimes) or ‘glowcations’ (where holidaymakers return with a youthful glow, rather than a suntan). And the best destinations for a glowcation? Conde Nast says Seoul (Korea), Tokyo and Kochi (Japan), Tromsø (Norway), Rabat (Morocco), Paris (France) and Sao Paolo (Brazil) should be top of the list.

Must do: If you’re heading to Seoul, Ferguson-Nair recommends a visit to Namsam Park (with the observation deck offering sweeping views across the city), a stroll through Bukchon Hanok Village (home to over 900 traditional Korean homes), and a food tour in the Gwanjang Night Market.

“The foodie experience is next level,” she says. “Don’t leave without trying Korean fare, whether it’s the fiery kimchi – a base for most Korean dishes – or octopus tentacles. While the markets are the best place for an authentic foodie experience, the Lotte World Tower has a selection of restaurants and bars with some of the best views in town.”

2. Shelf discovery

Here’s the trend that took everyone by surprise: according to Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report, 77% of travellers already participate in grocery store tourism, and 35% plan to visit a local supermarket on their next trip. What started as a quirky bit of fun (and a pretty straightforward excursion if you’re self-catering) has exploded into a full-blown phenomenon, with 2026 declared “the year of grocery store tourism” by different travel publications.

So, why are travellers swapping museums for supermarket aisles? It’s simple: grocery stores offer an authentic, affordable window into daily life. From what’s on the shelves to how stores are laid out, wandering through a local supermarket tells you more about habits, preferences, and culture than a guidebook ever could.

Of course, social media has a lot to answer for. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram have turned stores into destinations themselves. Japanese konbini (convenience stores), Spain’s Mercadona stores, and even Los Angeles’ Erewhon have become must-visit spots, with travellers posting “snack hauls” that rack up millions of views.

“I think what’s driving this trend is that people want to live like the locals, even just for a day,” says Ferguson-Nair. “Choosing cheese, cold meat and a few gourmet pantry essentials in a Parisian deli or even discovering a limited-edition Coca-Cola flavour in a Tokyo FamilyMart are fun moments that often stick with you!”

Must do: Yes, the exchange rate is against us, and yes, some of the UK’s department stores hardly qualify as ‘grocery’, but if you find yourself in London this year, a wander through Fortnum & Mason (the ‘Queen’s grocer’ with a grand staircase that looks more hotel than shop) is irresistible. And for those heading to the Cotswolds? Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop has become a pilgrimage site for fans of his show.

3. Bookish breaks

If you’re the type who plans trips around favourite books and authors, you’re in excellent company. According to Euronews’s analysis of 2026 travel trends, literary tourism is gaining significant momentum as travellers seek to immerse themselves in the worlds created by literary legends.

This trend encompasses everything from visiting landscapes described in beloved novels (like the Yorkshire Moors of Wuthering Heights) to attending major literary festivals. The festival calendar for 2026 is particularly robust, with events like the Jaipur Literature Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Jane Austen Festival, Hay Festival in Wales, and the Paris Book Festival at the Grand Palais drawing book lovers from across the globe.

Must do: South Africa also hosts several key literary events each year, including the Kingsmead Book Fair (Johannesburg), the Open Book Festival (Cape Town) and the Franschhoek Literary Festival (Franschhoek).

4. Fandom takes flight

Amadeus’s Travel Trends 2026 report identifies ‘Pop Culting’ as a major trend, where hit shows, films and franchises are motivating fans to travel. The numbers back this up: Amadeus data shows international flight searches for travel to San Diego during Comic-Con are up 9% for 2026 versus 2025. Meanwhile, Visit Bath expects the Netflix drama Bridgerton to contribute approximately £5 million per year to its local economy.

From Labubus merchandise (which sold an estimated US$1 billion worth in 2025) to K-Pop themed experiences, pop culture is inspiring new forms of tourism. The Seoul Tourism Organisation created an end-to-end traveller journey revolving around the film K-Pop Demon Hunters, where fans can make traditional knot bracelets worn by characters, eat featured meals, and even join K-Pop dance programmes near the scenic Cheonggyecheon Stream.

‘Set-jetting’ – visiting film and TV locations – has boomed thanks to streaming and social media. Popular destinations include Hawaii, Sicily and Phuket for The White Lotus, Malta and Dubrovnik for Game of Thrones, Paris for Emily in Paris, and Yorkshire for Downton Abbey.

5. Game-day dreams

2026 is shaping up to be a goodie for sports fanatics. According to Expedia, more than half of all tourists look to catch competitive action while on vacation, and the World Economic Forum predicts the sports tourism sector will surpass $1.7 trillion by 2032.

The calendar is packed with bucket-list events, including the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina (currently underway), the 2026 FIFA World Cup spanning the USA, Canada and Mexico (48 teams across 16 cities), Premier League clashes at iconic stadiums like Anfield and Old Trafford, Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix and Six Nations rugby fixtures.

Suppliers like Edusport Travel create seamless packages that go beyond just match tickets – think stadium tours, meet-and-greets, merchandise and local cultural experiences, adding value and excitement to every trip.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or simply want to experience the electric atmosphere of a major sporting event, 2026 offers endless opportunities to tick off your game-day dreams.

Must do: It’s a big year for rugby fans, with South Africa hosting New Zealand in August and September. ‘The Greatest Rivalry’ feels like an old-school test series, and local fans can catch the action at Ellis Park, FNB Stadium, Loftus, DHL Stadium and Kings Park.

As travel gets more specific, travel advisors are proving their worth – using their expertise to craft trips around your interests, whether that’s K-beauty clinics, literary pilgrimages or game-day bucket lists. In 2026, everyone deserves an adventure.

Johannesburg, South Africa: Nine Lives, a hidden speakeasy tucked between the HYDE Johannesburg Hotel’s fourth and fifth floors, has officially opened, marking the first venue of its kind in the city’s hospitality scene.

The 1970s-inspired drinking and dining destination introduces a new concept to Johannesburg’s Rosebank precinct, combining precision mixology with reimagined comfort food in an intimate, after-hours setting.

Key features:

Hidden location between hotel floors creates an exclusive atmosphere.

Menu features fusion dishes like smoky bonito risotto, tuna tostada, and pork dumplings.

Curated back bar stocks rare international labels unavailable elsewhere in South Africa.

Signature carbonated martinis and clarified classics headline a contemporary cocktail programme.

“What excites us most is creating a space the city hasn’t seen before: a one-of-a-kind, after-dark hideaway built on mood and intention. We called it Nine Lives for its feline spirit – curious and adaptable. A place where people can comfortably slip into their ‘other’ selves. The after- work self, the night-self, the version that wants sound, smoke, and an air of mystery,” said HYDE Johannesburg General Manager Jessica Redinger.

The venue represents HYDE Johannesburg’s expansion beyond traditional hotel dining, targeting both guests and local clientele seeking distinctive nightlife experiences.

Behind the vision, two culinary forces bring Nine Lives to life

Chef Marc Robert, Group Executive Chef at Colada Hospitality, who also helmed the award- winning Proud Mary, explains the vision of ‘accessible luxury’ on the menu at Nine Lives. “It brings a new and exciting culinary energy to Johannesburg, offering elevated dining without the intimidation. Our dishes blend global influences, and our signature plates showcase this contemporary cuisine philosophy.”

The bar matches the kitchen’s energy at Nine Lives. “We set out to redefine the bar experience with an unmatched spirits selection and a striking back bar. Our drinks echo Nine Lives’ 70s- inspired spirit, reimagined with contemporary twists,” adds Martin Strobos, Group Bar Beverage Manager at Colada Hospitality.

The opening forms part of HYDE’s broader culinary strategy, complementing the award-winning Proud Mary Restaurant and Proud Coffee on the ground floor of the HYDE Johannesburg hotel.

Nine Lives is open Monday – Saturday from 16h00, accepting reservations through dineplan and walk-ins at HYDE Johannesburg, Rosebank.

Authenticity, artistry, and flavour without equal.

Stellenbosch, Western Cape – 27 August 2025: This September, Stellenbosch is not claiming the title of South Africa’s Food & Wine Capital. It is reminding everyone why it holds it. Taste Stellenbosch is a month-long, valley-wide celebration of the destination’s enduring culinary excellence, cellar-door mastery and innovative spirit. From award-winning restaurants and trailblazing chefs to historic vineyards and pioneering wine estates, Stellenbosch continues to set the standard for taste, creativity and hospitality.

From 1–30 September 2025, over 30 of the region’s restaurants are dishing up spring offers that’ll make you weak at the knees. Expect a feast of tasting menus, chef’s tables, and seasonal platters that reflect a deep connection to place, people and produce.

Taste Stellenbosch and See Why the Food & Wine Capital Reigns Supreme 11

Daniël Kriel, Chairman of Taste Stellenbosch, believes Stellenbosch has earned its stripes as the perfect destination for both casual foodies and serious gastronomes.

“Our exceptional culinary offering has developed over generations and is built on history and heritage, creating a depth and richness that is unique. This is very similar to the development of the great wines from this region – and in Stellenbosch food and wine go hand in hand,” says Kriel. “No wonder this region is regarded as SA’s food and wine capital.”

For Kriel, this depth and richness is evident in the wide range of dining options, styles and experiences on offer. “Visitors are spoiled for choice. In Stellenbosch you can find everything – from authentic samosas to gourmet burgers to internationally acclaimed fine dining establishments. The local restaurant industry caters for every taste, budget and mood.”

“Whether on one of the wine farms, on a pavement under the oaks or inside one of our vibrant casual eateries, the golden thread that binds this diverse offering together is food prepared with passion and love!” says Kriel. “This is what our sponsors have also realised. We are excited to have Capitec on board for the campaign in September.”

“It’s awesome to be part of something that backs local businesses and shines a light on the stories behind Stellenbosch’s impressive culinary scene,” says JJ Booysen, Head: SME Payment Acceptance at Capitec.

September’s Culinary Showstoppers

Throughout Taste Stellenbosch, the variety and calibre of experiences on offer reflect why the town’s flavour truly reigns supreme:

Dusk, fresh from earning a coveted three-star rating from Eat Out, has created an Odyssey Tasting Menu that’s best described as culinary poetry. New dishes, seasonal ingredients, and pairings that’ll redefine what you thought possible.

Jordan Restaurant with Marthinus Ferreira is serving up temptation on a plate – a 250g sirloin with Café de Paris butter, hand-cut fries, fresh chef’s salad and a glass of their exquisite Jordan the Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon 2019.

The Garden Restaurant at Delheim invites guests to experience their intriguing “Kurktafel” which includes a 2.5 km walk between the estate’s fynbos, a three-course heritage menu and a reserve wine tasting. Fresh air and flavours combining for a perfect lunch in the vineyards.

Lievland Vineyards is laying on the love at their Lievland Café with a spring brunch from 8am to 11.30am every day – perfect for alfresco catch-ups with family and friends (made more perfect by their delightful collection of ‘mismatched animals’ grazing in the paddocks beyond).

Spek & Bone is making Tuesdays and Saturdays the most coveted nights in Stellenbosch with 50% off their legendary Chef’s set menu. This lively wine bar, tucked away in a hidden courtyard lit with fairy lights, serves up bold-flavoured tapas that’ll have you questioning why you eat anywhere else. This is your chance to experience their famous seven-plate journey at half the price – because exceptional dining shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions.

Dewarenmarkt is dedicating the entire month of September to celebrating one of the Cape’s most treasured indigenous ingredients – the waterblommetjie. Every single day, they’re transforming this delicate water flower into culinary art with Waterblommetjie & Sorrel Soup, crispy Waterblommetjie Tempura, and their signature Waterblommetjie Bredie with lamb knuckle. It’s a daily love letter to Stellenbosch’s deep-rooted food heritage!

Klein Joostenberg Bistro is pulling out all the stops for what they’re calling “the best, boldest brunch in the Boland” – butchers, bakers, and chefs combining forces under the guidance of Garth Bedford and Christophe Dehosse on Friday, 19 September.

“This is just a small amuse-bouche of what Stellenbosch has planned,” says Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch.

Taste Stellenbosch and See Why the Food & Wine Capital Reigns Supreme 12

“A wide range of Stellenbosch’s favourite coffee shops and eateries are also participating alongside recognised names like Bertus Basson’s Chorus, Kantien and Eike,” says Liebenberg. “It’s an exciting time to visit. Restaurants like Jordan and Dusk are receiving international acclaim, young, up-and-coming chefs are making their mark, and local gems are waiting to be discovered. Taste Stellenbosch gives visitors the chance to experience all of this in one unforgettable month.”

The Chefs Are Talking

Bertus Basson agrees:

“Taste Stellenbosch celebrates what already makes Stellenbosch special – its community of passionate chefs, winemakers and artisans who have been creating extraordinary experiences for years,” says Basson. “Food has this incredible power to bring people together and tell the story of a place.”

Perfect Timing for the Perfect Destination

Spring in Stellenbosch is a celebration in itself, with warm days, fresh seasonal produce and a calendar that blends vineyard life with world-class dining. For food lovers seeking authentic experiences and travellers who believe the best way to understand a destination is through its cuisine, Taste Stellenbosch is the ultimate way to savour the capital of flavour, one unforgettable plate and glass at a time.

Cruising remains one of the fastest-growing travel segments in the world, with 34.6 million cruise passengers in 2024 alone (up 9.3% on the year before). Notably, intent to cruise is stronger than ever before. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) reports that 1 in 3 international travellers have now taken a cruise, with 82% of them planning to cruise again!

Not only are South Africans embracing life on the waves, but Cape Town just recorded its best-ever cruise season, welcoming 83 ships during the 2024/25 period, including 11 inaugural calls.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) Vice President & Managing Director for Continental Europe, Middle East & Africa, Kevin Bubolz, is not surprised by the numbers:

“Cruising today looks very different from even 10 years ago. The cruise industry is dynamic, exciting and quick to respond to market trends, with each new ship and itinerary carefully designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s traveller.”

For Bubolz, slow travel is one of the most exciting trends. Here are just a few reasons a 2025/2026 cruise will deliver the most unhurried, immersive and enriching experience imaginable:

Extended itineraries

Global travel group Virtuoso reports a growing demand for extended itineraries – think 14, 16, 21 and even 60-day itineraries – allowing travellers to explore multiple regions in their own time. These itineraries offer more overnight port stays, fewer rushed calls and an altogether more leisurely pace.

“The biggest appeal of cruising is the ‘one airfare, multi-destination’ nature of the holiday,” explains Bubolz. “The money you save on flights and transfers can add extra days – and shore excursions – to an itinerary. It’s a great way for people to maximise their holiday time. You unpack once and really relax into the journey.”

Flight Centre South Africa’s Year in Travel Report 2024 shows that South Africans, on average, are opting to cruise for at least 10 days, which is above the global average of 7.1 days.

“South Africans love NCL’s European and Asia sailings,” says Bubolz. “The Med is popular at the moment, with our September and October sailings offering a welcome reprieve from South Africa’s winter weather – and you can choose from quick escapes (1 to 8 days), extended vacations (up to 14 days) and global journeys (15+ days).”

Carefully curated excursions

Forget lying on your lounger for days on end – today’s cruise itineraries include culturally rich cities like Istanbul, Tokyo and Lisbon, and quieter, lesser-known ports in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. This is your chance to experience the old world in a new way, with shore excursions offering everything from guided walks, gallery tours, cycling adventures and immersive cooking classes to satisfy even the most serious foodies.

On-board cultural immersion

Onboard experiences are just as important as those on shore. Imagine enrichment programmes where you can learn from wine connoisseurs, historians, wildlife experts and more. Instead of just visiting destinations, you’re understanding them – sipping Mediterranean wines while learning terroir secrets or attending lectures and language classes with local experts who bring centuries of history to life.

Cuisine, music, theatre

There really is something for everyone in the cruising world. For instance, in 2025, passengers don’t just dine; they learn to cook regional dishes, listen to local musicians and enjoy incredible theatre productions that stack up against the best of Broadway.

Slow sea days that prioritise wellness

According to Bubolz, it’s important to build in downtime. “We’re all carrying invisible backpacks filled with stress, deadlines, and family commitments. Sea days work as a magical reset button, where you have permission to do absolutely nothing except read by the pool or enjoy a nourishing treatment in NCL’s Mandara Spa and Salon – with the best view in the world!”

Family fun and connection are priorities on board, and it’s easy to get the kids to ditch their devices and join them on waterslides, racetracks and rollercoasters that you’ll talk about for years to come.

“Spend some time planning your cruise,” advises Bubolz. “And speak to a travel advisor. There are so many different options, with a combination of itineraries, ports and excursions that can make your journey truly personal and special. And with NCL’s More at Sea package, you can elevate your experience even further with special dining options, open bar, unlimited Wi-Fi, onboard entertainment and shore credits.”

Bubolz’s final advice? “If you’re still toying with the idea of booking a cruise, now is the time. It is one of the best ways to see the world.”

For more information about Norwegian Aqua, NCL’s award-winning 20-ship fleet, and worldwide itineraries, please contact a travel professional, call 021 200 6586 or visit www.ncl.com.

Jonathan Passaportis (Head of Tourism) and Sebastian Stent (Senior Marketing Manager, St Helena Government) will drive a six-pillar strategy to grow and diversify St Helena Island’s tourism offering.

JAMESTOWN, ST HELENA, 04 JULY 2025 – The St Helena Tourism Board has announced key leadership appointments that signal a strong strategic approach to sustainable, experience-driven tourism on one of the most extraordinary – and remote – islands in the world.

Jonathan Passaportis assumes the role of Head of Tourism from outgoing incumbent Matt Joshua, while Sebastian Stent joins as Senior Marketing Manager for the St Helena Government, bringing complementary expertise in destination marketing and digital innovation to advance the island’s tourism objectives, grow visitor numbers, strengthen local tourism businesses, and showcase the island’s rich history, natural beauty, and cultural identity on the global stage.

Zimbabwean-born Passaportis is an accomplished tourism entrepreneur with over 18 years of experience in tourism, agriculture and sustainable development in destinations across Southern Africa and Argentina. He is best known as the founder and managing director of Bushman Rock Safaris in Zimbabwe, which he helped grow into one of the country’s leading destinations for weddings, conferences, and safari experiences.

With a background in both journalism (including as head of digital at Media 24) and filmmaking, Stent now combines his big tech experience at Naspers, Meta and Opera with a passion for community-focused technology and the implementation of sustainable development initiatives.

This dynamic partnership marks a pivotal moment for St Helena – a subtropical paradise in the South Atlantic that has quietly been building its reputation as the ultimate destination for adventurous, culturally curious travellers seeking authentic experiences beyond the beaten path.

“It’s a great privilege to take the reins from Matt Joshua,” says Passaportis. “I’m joining the St Helena community at such an exciting time. The island holds extraordinary promise as a world-class tourism destination. I look forward to working with local stakeholders and the international travel trade to grow a sustainable, inclusive, and high-impact tourism economy.”

Both Passaportis and Stent are excited to work with niche operators and agents to develop packages and itineraries that appeal to today’s travellers – and really showcase what makes St Helena Island unique: its living history, unparalleled biodiversity, and the warmest welcome anywhere in the world.

“There is a perception that St Helena appeals to an older generation of traveller; history buffs who want to learn more about Napoleon’s last days on the island,” explains Passaportis. “And while this is certainly true for a number of visitors, the island holds broader appeal for adventure tourists, nature lovers, and those who want authentic, cultural immersion in a community like no other.”

To this end, Stent and Passaportis will be concentrating on six pillars:

History & Heritage. Alongside Napoleon’s exile on St Helena, visitors can learn more about the island’s connection to King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo and the Zulu uprising against the British, the Boer War (including the PoW camps and Boer cemetery), the abolition of slavery, and centuries of colonial and maritime history, including fortifications dating back to the 1700s.

Nature. St Helena (and its unique cloud forest) supports 502 endemic species (including the blushing snail, spiky yellow woodlouse and wirebird) equating to more than one sixth of the UK’s total endemic biodiversity. It’s an extraordinary destination for nature lovers, birders, and those fascinated by the volcanic geology that created this island paradise.

Culture. St Helena has evolved its own ‘Saint’ identity complete with a captivating dialect – a living blend of Creole expressions and maritime English that carries authentic echoes of 17th-century seafaring traditions into contemporary island culture. For travellers looking to immerse themselves in the food, language and history of a place, St Helena is unforgettable.

Hiking. The island’s compact volcanic topography creates an extraordinary hiking proposition for all ages and fitness levels; where diverse ecosystems – from semi-desert landscapes to scrub, woodlands and cloud forest – deliver breathtaking views around every corner.

Aquatic pursuits. With eight ‘divable’ shipwrecks, crystal clear water, average sea temperatures of between 19°C and 25°C, and rich marine life (including humpback whales [between June and December], whale sharks [Jan – March], bottlenose and pantropical dolphins, Devil rays, and green and hawksbill sea turtles) St Helena is the perfect destination to dive, snorkel, kayak or fish.

Adventure. Alongside walks, hikes and e-bikes, the St Helena Tourism Board is developing the island’s adventure tourism offering – including trail runs, marathons, climbing and mountain biking – for serious competitors and adventurers who want to tick off an experience in one of the most remote destinations on earth.

For destination specialists and tour operators, Airlink’s weekly service between Johannesburg and St Helena Island (with additional flights direct from Cape Town between December and March), combined with authentic character, depth of experience, and adventure, creates a tantalising option for high-value clients looking for their next destination.

“We’re targeting strategic partnerships with operators who want to offer their clients something completely different – and who understand the draw of sustainable, regenerative tourism,” notes Stent. “Our focus is on extended-stay experiences and real cultural immersion. We’re developing a superior value proposition for discerning travellers, while creating something special hand-in-hand with the local community.”

Passaportis agrees: “We’re not trying to be the next mass tourism destination. We’re building something much more valuable. From planting ebony trees rescued from the very brink of extinction to learning more about the region’s whale sharks, each and every visitor has the opportunity to contribute to St Helena’s future.”

ENDS

St Helena is one of the world’s most remote islands. It is a subtropical paradise where the mountainous terrain and microclimates create an astounding diversity of landscapes all within a few minutes’ drive. Boasting clean air, a sparkling ocean environment, and a safe community (pop. 4,439), St Helena is an off-the-beaten-track, bucket-list destination. Boasting more than 500 plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, the island is also renowned for its diving and marine experiences. Additionally, St Helena is home to Jonathan the Tortoise, the world’s oldest living land animal!

Flights to St Helena can be booked from Johannesburg to St Helena (with the carrier Airlink). Airlink also doubled its scheduled flight service between South Africa and St Helena to a seasonal twice-weekly flight from December to February. https://www.flyairlink.com/

The 7th annual International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) celebrates excellence in film and video production – and its powerful role in destination marketing.

One of the world’s most remote inhabited islands has triumphed on the global stage as St Helena Tourism’s breathtaking film Come and Find Me won the Gold Award in the Tourism Destination (International) category at the prestigious International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) in Sandton on 6 June.

This achievement follows the film’s earlier success in Japan, where it received a Director’s Choice special award at the Japan World’s Tourism Film Festival (JWTFF).

Jonathan Passaportis, Head of Tourism for St Helena, said: “Winning gold at ITFFA was a special moment for everyone involved in the production – and well-deserved recognition for the director Darren Peens, who attended the ceremony with actress Katie-Raye Williams. We’re thrilled!”

For Passaportis, Come and Find Me showcases what makes St Helena Island so special, including its unique natural heritage, adventurous activities, and bucket-list appeal.

“The film represents a bold departure from traditional tourism marketing, using narrative-driven storytelling to captivate audiences and celebrate the wonders of St Helena, for example, the rugged coastline, stunning landscapes, marine life – including the island’s famous whale sharks, known locally as “bone sharks” – history, and cultural appeal,” says Passaportis. “We hope this award will introduce St Helena Island to new audiences, eco-conscious travellers, and those looking for an adventure unlike any other.”

ITFFA, now in its 7th year, has established itself as the premier tourism film festival in Africa, receiving over 4,000 film entries from 94 countries since its inception. The festival celebrates how film tourism drives economic growth and destination appeal, with a focus on how high-profile productions contribute to job creation and increased tourism arrivals.

For St Helena, an island of just 47 square miles in the South Atlantic with a population of approximately 4,000 locals, this victory over entries from much larger (and more accessible) destinations reinforces its growing reputation for off-the-beaten-path journeys and remarkable natural wonders.

“This gold award shows that St Helena‘s unique character and location are exactly what makes us shine on the global stage,” added Passaportis. “We invite travellers to come and find us – and experience what St Helena Island has to offer.”

You’ll have heard the news: The Walt Disney Company is bringing their seventh Disney theme park resort to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island. Expected to open at some point between 2030 and 2033, it’ll be the first-ever Disney theme park and resort for the Middle East – and great news for South African families who want to experience Disney magic a little closer to home.

But it’s not the biggest news out of Abu Dhabi this year. Their Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has just announced that 1.4 million overnight guests visited the UAE’s capital city in the first quarter of 2025 alone. It’s a staggering number – even for a city that hopes to welcome 39.3 million visitors a year by the end of the decade.

And they’re working hard to ensure the city becomes more than a convenient layover, and a sought-after destination in its own right.

As Disney explains, the UAE is located within a four-hour flight of one-third of the world’s population, making it a compelling proposition. Although an 8-hour flight for South Africans, Antoinette Turner, GM Flight Centre South Africa, agrees.

“Last year, Dubai was our second-most popular international destination behind London,” says Turner. “Of course, it’s a great Emirates layover option, but we’re also starting to see a shift. Travellers are increasingly recognising both Dubai and Abu Dhabi as irresistible holiday destinations, either extending layovers to experience the UAE (and enjoying two holidays in one) or planning dedicated trips to explore what each have to offer in terms of an exciting, memorable trip.”

Spoiler alert: plenty of spoils and adventures await.

Disney will be joining Ferrari World (home to Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster), Yas Marina Circuit (known for authentic F1 track experiences), Warner Bros. World and Yas Waterworld on Yas Island, making it THE destination for those looking for an epic, adventure-packed itinerary alongside some good, old-fashioned family fun.

But as Turner explains, there’s much more to Abu Dhabi than meets the eye. In no particular order, here are Flight Centre’s top five reasons to visit in 2025:

1. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (arguably the most beautiful and impressive in the UAE, and home to the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet) captivates visitors with its stunning architecture, white marble domes, mosaic floors, lunar lighting, Murano glass and intricate design details, including beautiful floral motifs (it’s often called the “Flower Mosque” for good reason).

While the visual experience alone is remarkable, Turner suggests booking a guided tour, as local guides can transform even a short visit into something far more meaningful, unlocking the history and cultural significance of this incredible landmark.

“It’s important to be aware and respectful of local customs,” she says. “As with other mosques around the world, there’s a dress code, so be prepared to cover up – or be offered a loose-fitting abaya to wear.”

2. Year-round sunshine and warm hospitality

As Turner explains, Abu Dhabi’s cooler winter months (with an average daytime temperature of 25°C) coincide perfectly with South Africa’s long end-of-year school holiday, making it the perfect time to visit with kids.

“Abu Dhabi is famous for warm Emirati hospitality,” comments Turner. “There are also plenty of family-friendly hotels and resorts – for example, the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, which has great views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, two private beaches and an impressive pool. The hotel also has a free shuttle bus to some of the city’s top attractions. Do chat to your travel advisor about the best accommodation to meet your needs. There are great options to choose from.”

Make sure to enjoy the balmy weather on a speedboat tour, harbour cruise or dhow – Abu Dhabi looks spectacular from the water!

3. Desert adventures

Of course, all visitors to Abu Dhabi should get out into the desert – and there’s more than one way to experience it, including sandboarding, dune bashing, 4×4 safaris, camel rides, star-gazing and moonlit dinners under Bedouin tents.

“A desert adventure is the highlight of any trip to Abu Dhabi,” says Turner. “Many operators bundle a few activities together, making it a great day out. Your travel expert will be able to suggest a reputable operator, plus the best deals around.”

4. Stratos Revolving Lounge Bar & Grill

Abu Dhabi boasts an exciting culinary scene. Foodies will love the city’s delicious mix of traditional Emirati cuisine (don’t leave without trying machboos and khuzi), fresh seafood, street food and high-end dining.

But for the novelty of a revolving restaurant, gorgeous views and a great steak, it’s difficult to beat Stratos restaurant. “It’s a very touristy thing to do,” explains Turner “But why not? It promises 360-degree views of Abu Dhabi’s skyline and the turquoise Arabian Gulf!”

5. Al Ain, the living oasis of Abu Dhabi

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the magic of a living, breathing desert oasis, then the quaint city of Al Ain is worth the 90-minute (or so) drive to the UAE’s eastern border with Oman. This UNESCO Heritage Site promises lots more to do, including a drive to the top of Jebel Hafit (also known as Jebel Hafeet and the UAE’s second highest peak), a walk through the city’s evergreen oasis and even white-water rafting at Wadi Adventure – a water adventure park near Jebel Hafit’s natural hot springs.

There’s no doubt about it, Abu Dhabi ticks all the boxes for an immersive, high-thrills holiday like no other. But there’s another reason to add it to your list: there are more flights between South Africa and the UAE than ever before.

“Emirates operates 49 weekly flights between South Africa and Dubai, from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban,” Turner says. “From there, Abu Dhabi is easily accessible via airline-organised transfers, shuttles, private taxis or the reliable Interline Bus service.”

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways operates four weekly return flights between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg, with plans to increase to daily flights by August 2025.

If a trip to the Middle East is on your wish list, this might just be your sign to make it happen.

After decades of hard work, raising families, navigating life’s curveballs (and probably sitting through more than your fair share of meetings that could’ve been emails), you’ve earned the freedom to put yourself first. If you’re 60 or older and itching to tick off those once-in-a-lifetime travel dreams, now’s the time.

But let’s be honest: even if your passport is ready for new stamps and your heart is screaming “safari!” or “Santorini!”, it can feel uncomfortable to dip into retirement savings or spend big on experiences. There’s always that little voice whispering: “Should I really be doing this?”

The answer? Yes. Absolutely yes – and especially if you’re doing it strategically.

“Travel shouldn’t come with guilt,” says Sue Garrett, GM Supply, Pricing & Marketing at Flight Centre South Africa. “Our Travel Experts have personally seen how today’s over-60s are living in the ‘now’ without forgetting about the importance of planning for the future.”

According to Flight Centre’s recent Global PR Survey (conducted across South Africa, Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand), one in three travellers aged 60+ say they’ll use a portion of their retirement savings to fund holidays in 2025, with South Africans closely matching that trend at 32%.

So, whether you’re plotting luxury escapes or slow-travel adventures closer to home, there’s no need for guilt – just good planning.

Let us show you how some clever number-crunching and forward-thinking can get you on your way sooner than you think…

Build your bucket list into your budget

Before you book flights, build a plan.

“If travel is a non-negotiable part of your retirement lifestyle, then treat it as such,” advises Garrett. “It belongs in the same conversation as healthcare and housing.”

Financial experts agree: travel fits into your ‘wants’ category, typically around 30% of your post-tax income. Many retirees are now earmarking 5–10% of their annual budget for travel alone.

Not sure where to start? Try this:

Decide what kind of trips light you up.

Set an annual travel goal.

Break it up into monthly contributions.

Who needs an inheritance when you’ve got great stories?

Here’s a stat to raise eyebrows (and maybe a few glasses): nearly one in 10 over-60s say they’re considering using their children or grandchildren’s inheritance to tick off travel dreams. South Africans specifically? Just 3%. We’re far less likely to dip into Junior’s future fund.

That said, 25% of South African respondents say they’d be open to letting their kids or grandkids foot the bill for their next holiday! We do love a good multi-gen escape, after all – in fact, Saffers are the most likely to holiday alongside multiple generations of family.

The takeaway? Whether you’re funding your own trip or gratefully letting your family play tour sponsor, travel isn’t selfish – it’s connection, enrichment, and joy in real time.

Bundle up and save big

Smart travel is less about where you go and more about how (and when) you book. Bundling your holiday components (flights, tours or cruises, and insurance) can deliver serious savings without compromising on experience.

Flight Centre’s in-store “Bundle & Save” offer is one such hack: book a cruise or international tour (minimum five nights), return flights and travel insurance together, and you’ll save R5,000 off your total (exclusive to newsletter subscribers).

“Bundling simplifies planning, cuts out hidden costs, and guarantees better value across the board,” explains Garrett.

The bonus? “You’re covered from take-off to touchdown, with fewer moving parts to manage,” she adds.

Be flexible – not frugal

One of the simplest ways to stretch your travel budget? Shift your dates instead of your dreams.

Travelling during shoulder or off-peak seasons can cut costs dramatically. Flights are cheaper, accommodation rates drop, and you’ll avoid the crowds clogging up Europe’s cobbled streets or Kruger’s game drives.

Even shifting your departure by just a few days can reveal better deals, especially on international routes or long-haul cruises. According to Garrett:

“Flexibility is one of the biggest financial advantages retirees have. If you’re not tied to school holidays or office calendars anymore, be sure to leverage that freedom!”

Points are pension-friendly, too

Loyalty pays – literally. Frequent flyer miles and hotel rewards can turn everyday spending into free flights, upgrades, or extra nights abroad.

If you haven’t already, sign up for airline and hotel loyalty programmes (most are free). Link them to your credit card to earn points even when buying groceries or paying bills.

“Many of our older travellers have built up years’ worth of points without realising their value,” Garrett says. “Used wisely, they can unlock premium experiences without the premium price tag.”

Hot tip: Redeem during off-peak periods for maximum availability and value, especially on long-haul routes where savings really add up.

Trade square metres for air miles

Some over-60s are going all in on travel by letting go of what no longer serves them. Selling a large home, downsizing, or renting it out while abroad can free up serious capital (and reduce monthly expenses) to fund extended adventures.

Others offload unused assets like second cars, boats, and even collectables gathering dust, turning them into plane tickets and passport stamps.

Travel hacks that stretch every rand

You don’t need a luxury budget to have a first-class experience. Small savings add up fast, especially when you’re travelling for longer or further.

Here’s how savvy over-60s are squeezing more out of every trip:

Pack light to dodge baggage fees and make airport transitions easier.

Self-cater occasionally with local market finds – it’s cheaper and gives a glimpse into local life.

Use public transport or walk where it’s safe and scenic.

Book midweek flights, which are usually cheaper than weekend departures.

Being budget-conscious means being intentional. Spend smarter on the things that matter most to you.

Make money as you go

Who says retirement means retiring from earning? Many over-60s are finding creative ways to fund their travels while they’re on the road (or in the sky).

Think:

House-sitting in exchange for free accommodation.

Volunteering (like conservation work or teaching English) in return for meals and a bed.

Freelancing or consulting remotely, especially if you’ve got decades of expertise to offer.

“These travellers are saving money while adding purpose and connection to their journeys,” says Garrett. “It’s a win-win.”

Not keen to work? No problem. Just joining global house-sitting networks can shave thousands off your accommodation costs each year… without having to lift more than a coffee cup!

It’s evident that with a bit of planning and a few savvy moves, over-60s can prove that travel can be both financially responsible and wildly rewarding. You’ve put in the work. Now it’s time for wonder.

“Retirement is about choosing what matters most. And for many South Africans right now, that means seeing more of the world while they’re healthy enough to enjoy every moment,” Garrett concludes.

Move over Napa Valley. Stellenbosch has officially earned its place on the world food map. With 10 restaurants recognised in this year’s Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards (including one of only seven nationwide to clinch a coveted three-star rating), this Winelands gem is no longer just about wine; it’s where culinary ambition intertwines with heritage charm, and where South African chefs are transforming destination dining.

What makes it even more irresistible? You don’t need a plane ticket to Europe or Michelin Guide reservations made six months in advance. You just need a long weekend… and an appetite for exceptional food experiences, scenic splurges, and maybe some Shiraz on standby.

“We’re seeing more South Africans planning trips around taste rather than ticking off traditional sightseeing lists,” says Antoinette Turner, General Manager, Flight Centre South Africa. “Culinary travel offers something deeply personal, connecting you not only with place but with people and culture, too.”

So, whether you’re chasing bold flavours or slow-sipped luxury (or both), here’s why your next gourmet getaway should begin in Stellenbosch.

The accolades: Why everyone’s talking about Stellenbosch right now

If there were any doubts about Stellenbosch being South Africa’s culinary capital, they were laid to rest on 31 March at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. That’s where 10 local restaurants claimed their place amongst South Africa’s finest at the 2025 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards – more than any other town or city outside of Cape Town itself.

What made this year stand out wasn’t just quantity, but quality across every tier – from bold newcomers to heritage fine-dining institutions. As mentioned, one restaurant earned a rare and coveted three-star rating (reserved only for those scoring over 90 out of 100), while four others clinched two stars – a benchmark reserved for consistent excellence across food, service, ambience and innovation.

Here are the ten award-winning restaurants putting Stellenbosch on every serious food lover’s travel menu:

Three-stars:

Dusk – 43 Plein Street

A fine dining experience rooted in fermentation-forward techniques and sensory storytelling. Expect house-made misos and garums alongside local cheeses, and dishes that look more like art than dinner.

Two-stars:

Rust en Vrede – Annandale Road

Serving a six-course tasting menu that fuses contemporary French technique with global flair – all served in a historic Cape Dutch wine cellar surrounded by vines. Don’t skip the wine pairing curated by sommelier James Mukosi.

MERTIA – Bird Street

Led by chef Matt van den Berg (ex-La Colombe), MERTIA delivers modern South African nostalgia through meticulous multi-course menus using hyper-local ingredients like Meuse Farm produce – paired with exceptional service that earned it this year’s Service Excellence Award too.

Clara’s Barn – Faure Village Road (Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate)

Set inside one of SA’s oldest barns, Clara’s is where you’ll find lip-smacking, nostalgic farm-style dishes, from fish-scale-enhanced bread courses to creative vegetable-forward mains celebrating indigenous plants.

The Jordan Restaurant with Marthinus Ferreira – Stellenbosch Kloof Road

Expect refined but approachable farm-style dining from Chef Marthinus Ferreira (yes, he trained under both Ramsay and Blumenthal). Expect seasonal menus with bold flavours, and some truly unforgettable wine pairings from Jordan Wine Estate itself.

One-Star:

Eike by Bertus Basson – Dorp Street

Eike is a love letter to South African culinary heritage, with playful plating and nostalgic storytelling woven into each dish (think springbok bobotie tartare or edible candles).

Hōseki – Delaire Graff Estate

Japanese omakase meets Winelands luxury at this intimate fine-dining spot led by Chef Virgil Kahn. Expect Wagyu beef grilled over invasive-species wood and bluefin tuna sliced with extraordinary precision… in full view of mountain-backed vineyards.

Post & Pepper – Old Post Office Building, Corner Bird and Plein Street

Chef Jess van Dyk serves up Asian-South African small plates inside a historic post office, with dishes like pork lollipops glazed in doenjang and XO kingklip winning rave reviews for flavour and fun factor.

Rykaart’s at Longridge Wine Estate – Helderberg Road

Laid-back family-style three-course feasts served on a biodynamic farm beneath sweeping views of False Bay.

Spek & Bone – Dorp Street

Tucked behind an old fruit market vine canopy lies this relaxed sharing-plate gem from Bertus Basson, where potato churros are covered in mushroom ketchup and Peppermint Crisp cones end things on a very sweet note indeed.

The town turning meals into meaningful journeys

Food is no longer just the cherry on top of a good holiday – it’s become the main course. According to recent studies, over 70% of global travellers now prioritise culinary experiences when booking a trip. And with the culinary tourism market projected to grow at nearly 20% annually until 2030, food-first travel is becoming a full-blown movement.

The sheer number of Eat Out stars may have put Stellenbosch in the foodie spotlight, but locals will tell you: this town has been quietly crafting world-class experiences for years.

“These awards are recognition not just for our chefs, but for an entire ecosystem of passion and place,” says Annemie Liebenberg, CEO at Visit Stellenbosch. “Our farmers, winemakers, producers, and artisans all contribute to creating something special here. It’s both heritage-forward and forward-thinking. And it’s deeply personal.”

It’s this convergence of old-world charm and new-school creativity that draws both local travellers and global gourmands to the region. And while other foodie-focused destinations often hinge on one season or signature event, Stellenbosch is refreshingly evergreen, offering different flavours (literally and figuratively) year-round.

“What makes Stellenbosch so special is how much flavour it packs into such a compact space,” says Turner. “You can go from cutting-edge omakase to wood-fired bread based on family recipes, all within five minutes of each other.”

In many ways, what Napa Valley was to Californian cuisine 20 years ago feels very much like what Stellenbosch is becoming now – just with bolder spices and better biltong.

“We often think we need to look far afield for world-class experiences,” says Turner. “But Stellenbosch reminds us that some of the best culinary adventures are waiting just down the road – served with heart and paired with heritage.”

So, if you’re planning your next date weekend, solo escape, or group getaway with fellow foodies, Stellenbosch deserves a spot at your table.

Go there hungry.
Leave full… in every sense of the word.
