New industry report, released on day one of Africa Travel Week, delivers an honest assessment of the continent’s current tourism landscape, and issues a clear warning:
the post-pandemic grace period is over.

Cape Town: Africa Travel Week, built by RX Africa, has released its annual State of the Industry Report. The comprehensive, data-driven report examines the forces transforming travel and tourism across the continent, from aviation access and AI-driven distribution to sustainability compliance, inclusion and the next generation workforce.

The report arrives at a pivotal moment. Africa welcomed 81 million international visitors in 2025 – 8% growth, the fastest of any region globally – and aviation capacity surged 13.7% to 182.4 million departure seats. Yet the headline numbers mask a more fractured reality: Central and Western Africa recorded 0% aviation growth while Eastern Africa surged 24.3%; fewer than 5% of African hospitality properties hold third-party sustainability certification, despite the EU’s greenwashing ban activating in September 2026; and 72% of Gen Z now use AI to plan travel, meaning operators without machine-readable inventory are invisible before the conversation even begins.

“This report explores current themes and trends,” said Olivia Gradidge, Marketing Manager, WTM Africa & ILTM Africa. “Including trust, AI and travel tech, traveller psychology, sustainability and authenticity.”

Commissioned to Big Ambitions, RX Africa’s content, communications and marketing agency, the report draws on contributions from more than 25 industry leaders, academics, and practitioners across the continent, including environmental expert Dr Louise de Waal, director of the Blood Lions campaign to end commercial captive lion breeding and canned hunting, Judy Kepher Gona, founder and executive director at Sustainable Travel and Tourism Agenda (STTA), and Luckson Zambuko, Founder of the African Youth in Tourism and Hospitality Association.

“What struck us most when compiling this report was not the scale of the opportunity – that has always been evident – but the specificity of what is now required to capture it,” said Dorine Reinstein, Content Director, Big Ambitions. “The operators and destinations that are winning in 2026 are not the ones with the best product, but the ones with the best proof. Proof of access, proof of trust, proof of sustainability, proof of welcome. That shift– from aspiration to verification – is the defining commercial reality this report addresses.”

The full report, including a ten-point manifesto for African tourism stakeholders, is available at https://soi2026.yop.co.za/ – required reading for every operator, investor, policymaker, and destination marketer with a stake in the future of African tourism.

It was introduced by Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa, with a video at the opening ceremony of WTM Africa on Monday, 13 April, and supported by a panel discussion on the Future Stage on Wednesday, 15 April.

The panel, sponsored by LIFT and moderated by Dorine Reinstein, included David Frost, CEO of SATSA; Judy Kepher Gona, Director of Sustainable Travel & Tourism Africa; Kwakye Donkor, CEO of Africa Tourism Partners; Liesel van Zyl, Head of Positive Impact and Product Development at Go2Africa; and Rashid Toefy, Deputy Director-General for Economic Operations at the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

Cape Town – ILTM Africa, the continent’s only dedicated luxury travel trade event, has concluded its 2026 edition with record-breaking results, breaking attendance and appointment figures and sending a signal to the global travel industry: African luxury tourism has entered an era defined by trust and sustained demand.

The boutique travel event, held at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town, recorded a 37% increase in attendance compared to 2025, with 87% of buyers attending for the first time, drawn from 32 countries. Appointments increased by 29% year-on-year, reflecting a surge in commercial intent from luxury buyers actively seeking African experiences.

The results are striking given the broader context of global uncertainty. According to the newly released State of African Tourism 2026 report, the continent is successfully “selling certainty in an anxious world.” Because high-end safaris and luxury itineraries are typically booked 12 to 18 months in advance, and demand for established destinations remains resolute, the region’s tourism industry is not expected to be materially affected by ongoing disruptions in the Middle East. Instead, discerning luxury travellers are increasingly looking to Africa not as an alternative, but as a trusted destination of first choice.

Africa’s hotel development pipeline tells its own story: with 55% of the entire continental pipeline currently under construction, investor confidence in African luxury hospitality is at an historic high. The infrastructure is being built, and ILTM Africa’s record buyer numbers suggest the demand is ready to meet it.

The 87% new buyer figure is perhaps the most telling statistic of all. As the State of African Tourism report highlights, the post-pandemic “revenge travel” wave has crashed, replaced by a more informed, discerning traveller for whom trust is the new currency. This influx of new buyers suggests that ILTM Africa is actively converting these new markets, translating directly into fresh commercial pipelines and relationships for exhibitors that did not exist twelve months ago.

Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa, the organiser behind ILTM Africa, noted: “The travel sector has always been a people industry selling high-value, high-stakes experiences. Africa Travel Week has evolved into a powerful in-person event where technology handles the heavy lifting, and humans focus on the relationship building that defines this industry.”

Cape Town: World Travel Market (WTM) Africa 2026 has opened its doors at the CTICC in Cape Town this week to its largest and most internationally diverse edition to date, welcoming 8,000 trade professionals from 63 countries and confirming Africa’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism markets.

Exhibitor numbers have grown to 780 – a double-digit increase on 2025 – drawn from 40 countries and supported by 43 tourism boards and 65 event partners. A total of 13,500 appointments have been confirmed, a 35% increase on last year.

Perhaps the most significant story within the numbers is the breadth of new participation. Fifteen countries are represented by buyers for the first time, including Jamaica, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Pakistan, Denmark, and Portugal. This geographical spread reflects Africa’s growing appeal across entirely new source markets. On the exhibitor side, Angola, Cyprus, Djibouti, Jordan, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UAE are all participating for the first time.

Crucially, 81% of hosted buyers and Buyers’ Club members are entirely new to WTM Africa, a remarkable statistic that points to an event rapidly expanding its global footprint.

The timing of this year’s event carries particular significance. As the travel industry continues to navigate the ripple effects of conflict in the Middle East, which is disrupting established travel corridors, shifting source markets, and forcing a global reassessment of destination strategy, face-to-face trade events have become vital.

Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa, said in the opening event: “Africa Travel Week has evolved into a powerful in-person event where technology handles the heavy lifting, and humans focus on the relationship building that defines this industry. Our people are our superpower.”

The industry’s own research reinforces this human-centred approach. This year’s State of the Industry Report, commissioned for Africa Travel Week, highlights that the path forward for African tourism is rooted in empathy and genuine human connection: “It’s how you interact with the traveller as a human being and understand where their specific needs are.”

The tangible economic value of these connections was highlighted by Alderman James Vos, who noted that Cape Town’s international flights have surged to over 230 per week, with tourism now supporting over 106,000 jobs in the city.

“As a City government, we made a deliberate decision to host WTM Africa,” Vos said during his opening address. “It is an investment that delivers real economic returns. With over 100 countries represented here and 8,000 trade professionals doing deals on this floor, the impact goes far beyond these few days. It translates into future bookings, sustained demand, and long-term growth. Tourism is a team sport. When travellers choose South Africa, they are choosing an experience that no single destination can deliver alone.”

Beyond the exhibition floor, WTM Africa 2026 features a comprehensive content programme of 101 speakers across 82 curated sessions, spanning travel tech, responsible tourism, adventure tourism, medical tourism, golf tourism, and sports and events tourism. The Africa Tourism Investment Conference (ATIC), taking place on Tuesday 14 April, brought together investors, policymakers, and tourism leaders to interrogate the continent’s infrastructure ambitions and investment pipeline.

Cape Town – World Travel Market (WTM) Africa has announced the launch of its first-ever China Ready® Workshop in partnership with China Business Intelligence Service Network (CBISN), a must-attend event for tourism stakeholders seeking to position themselves for success in the Chinese outbound market.

The workshop will be held on 15 April 2026 from 8am to 10am, providing attendees with critical insights and practical tools while earning valuable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

China Ready® is the world’s leading Chinese tourism preparation programme. Since 2002, it has been successfully implemented across 54 countries and six continents, helping more than a quarter of global tourism destinations effectively serve Chinese visitors.

“With China’s outbound travel sector projected to reach 200 million travellers annually by 2028, the intensive workshop comes at a crucial time for African tourism stakeholders,” says Reanté Naidoo, Buyer & Digital Director at RX Africa.

“Participants will receive expert guidance on everything from understanding Chinese visitors’ needs and preferences to marketing and promotion, dos and don’ts, the power of social media, preferred digital payments and cultural expectations, enabling them to create more appealing experiences for Chinese visitors,” adds Naidoo.

China Ready® will be rolled out in stages at WTM Africa, starting with the essential Knowledge Module in 2026, offering key insights into the Chinese market – including market demographics, culture and customs, and business protocol. In 2027, the focus will shift to Marketing to China and then Branding and Positioning to China in 2028. This phased approach not only makes the content more digestible but also allows professionals to accumulate CPD credits at a steady pace.

CPD is essential for professionals to stay up-to-date and competitive in their field. Attendees gain valuable credits and insights into the latest industry trends, innovations and consumer behaviour, while building meaningful connections across the global travel and tourism sector.

New format makes Cape Town a central hub for Africa’s luxury travel industry.

Cape Town – ILTM Africa today announced a major expansion for its 2026 event, becoming the first luxury travel marketplace on the continent to serve both inbound and dedicated outbound opportunities focused on the Middle East. The move responds to rapid growth in Africa’s outbound luxury travel spending, which industry data shows is reaching US$1.6 bn by 2026.

The expansion comes as travel agencies across sub-Saharan Africa report a 32% jump in luxury outbound bookings over the past year, with strong demand for Middle Eastern destinations. This growth has created a clear market need that ILTM Africa 2026 will address.

“The African luxury travel market continues to evolve, and our clients’ needs are evolving with it,” said Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director of ILTM Africa. “For 2026, we’re enhancing our event by introducing dedicated outbound opportunities focused exclusively on the Middle East, giving African agencies direct access to a curated selection of luxury products from that region. At the same time, we remain fully committed to delivering unmatched value for our South African and sub-Saharan partners through our established buyer mix. This extension simply adds targeted connections while protecting the ROI and proven benefits that have made ILTM Africa indispensable for both exhibitors and buyers.”

ILTM Africa will return to Cape Town’s Norval Foundation in 2026 as an expanded marketplace bringing together:

African suppliers, showcasing premier continental experiences;

Middle Eastern suppliers, presenting high-end regional offerings;

African buyers, seeking both regional products and exclusive access to new opportunities in the Middle East;

And international buyers, exploring investment prospects within African markets.

This dual focus makes ILTM Africa the only African event connecting luxury suppliers with buyers looking for both inbound and outbound opportunities. Many African buyers now handle both types of travel but previously had to attend multiple events to meet all their suppliers. The new format saves time and money while giving suppliers access to expanded markets.

Under the event’s permanent tagline “Igniting Opportunities Fuels Prosperity,” the 2026 event reflects a clear mission: create real value by connecting people who can grow each other’s businesses, whether that means bringing luxury travellers into Africa or helping Africans discover new destinations abroad.

The event will maintain its successful format of pre-matched one-to-one meetings, focused networking, and practical sessions on market trends, now with expanded scope to serve both markets. The Norval Foundation, known for its art collections and architecture, provides a fitting backdrop for this business-focused event.

World Travel Market (WTM) Africa 2025 officially opened today with unprecedented global participation, welcoming industry professionals from a record 96 countries under the theme “Ignite Africa”. The event signals strong recovery and growth in African tourism, with significant increases in both buyer and exhibitor numbers.

In her opening address, Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa, highlighted the event’s impressive growth: “We have 96 countries represented this year, which is the biggest World Travel Market Africa in eleven years. We have a 27% increase in buyers this year and 82% of these are new to World Travel Market Africa, which is amazing for our exhibitors.”

The eleventh edition of WTM Africa features 742 exhibitors, with first-time participation from six new destinations: Zambia, Netherlands, Qatar, Croatia, Sierra Leone and São Paulo. The event has also attracted 13 new buyer countries, including Peru, Algeria, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Romania, Finland, Ireland, and Kuwait.

Alderman James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, welcomed delegates to “the best city in the world,” noting that “Cape Town was now ranked as the best city in the world by Time Out for 2025, moving up from the second place last year.”

Vos went on to share key statistics that reflect Cape Town’s growing role as a travel hub:

226 international flights land weekly, connecting Cape Town to 31 destinations.

A total of 76 cruise ships are scheduled this season.

Targeted marketing campaigns reached over 68 million people in India alone – with more than 130 million page impressions within just one month.

During his address, Vos outlined his five-point programme to drive tourism growth in Cape Town, starting with landing more flights. “The more flights we land, the more visitors we attract, the more jobs we create,” he said, citing recent engagements with airlines in India about launching direct routes between Cape Town and Indian cities. Similar efforts will be made later this year during an official visit to China.

His plan also includes expanding the city’s cruise economy, increasing conferences and events, implementing clever destination marketing, and investing in more attractions and experiences with geographic spread.

Vos stressed that all these efforts are underpinned by investment into infrastructure resilience – including water security projects; independent energy generation; expanded public transport; enhanced law enforcement deployment; and visa reform initiatives aimed at improving access:

“One of the biggest barriers to travel is access. That’s why I champion visa reform – to make it easier for visitors to choose South Africa – and ultimately Cape Town.”

Both leaders highlighted the importance of tourism as an economic driver, with Vos stating: “Tourism is more than just an industry. It’s a game changer for businesses and communities. And tourism isn’t just about the places we visit. It’s also about the people we empower.”

WTM Africa 2025 features a comprehensive programme including responsible tourism awards, content sessions across five theatres, travel tech showcases, and specialised events focused on business tourism, eco-tourism, and tourism investment. The event has generated 38,559 appointment requests, reflecting its serious business nature.

Weaving concluded her remarks by emphasising the human element driving African tourism success: “Africa’s people are our superpower”.

Key Stats & Highlights from WTM Africa 2025

World Travel Market (WTM) Africa has announced the launch of its first-ever China Ready® Workshop in partnership with CBISN, aimed at helping African tourism businesses capture their share of the world’s largest outbound travel market.

“With China’s outbound travel sector projected to reach 200 million travellers annually by 2028, the exclusive one-day intensive training on 11 April 2025 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) comes at a crucial time for African tourism stakeholders,” says Olivia Gradidge, Marketing Manager for WTM Africa & ILTM Africa.

China Ready® is the world’s leading Chinese tourism preparation programme. Since 2002, it has been successfully implemented across 52 countries and six continents, helping more than a quarter of global tourism destinations effectively serve Chinese visitors.

“The workshop represents a significant opportunity for African tourism businesses to gain a competitive advantage in the Chinese market,” adds Gradidge. “Participants will receive expert guidance on everything from understanding Chinese visitors’ needs and preferences to marketing and promotion, dos and don’ts, the power of social media, preferred digital payments and cultural expectations, enabling them to create more appealing experiences for Chinese visitors.”

“China was the country with the highest outbound tourism expenditure worldwide in 2023 according to UN Tourism. China Ready provides assurance to Chinese visitors that destination and service providers understand and adhere to the Chinese hospitality standard”, says Marcus Lee, CEO of China Travel Online.

The China Ready® programme, developed by the China Outbound Tourism Research Academy (COTA) and operated by CBISN, is recognised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Since its inception, the programme has helped various destinations achieve remarkable growth, with some reporting an over 100% increase in Chinese visitors after implementation.

Registration to WTM Africa includes access to content workshops, networking opportunities, and social events.

Cape Town – Registration for one of Africa’s flagship travel events, World Travel Market Africa, is now open.

Taking place in Cape Town from 9-11 April 2025, WTM Africa brings together leaders in leisure tourism, luxury travel, LGBTQ+ travel, MICE/business travel, sport tourism, Tourism Investment, Responsible Tourism as well as travel technology – delivering meaningful networking and collaboration opportunities for the African tourism industry.

Mirrored on WTM flagship events like WTM London and the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, WTM Africa delivers a proven mix of hosted buyers, suppliers, media representatives, pre-scheduled appointments, networking and evening functions.

“Ignite Africa is the perfect theme for 2025,” says Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director for RX Africa. “We’re creating a space for real conversation, connection and collaboration, and bringing together the best minds in the industry to shape the future of African tourism.”

To this end, the 2025 programme introduces focused ‘content clusters’ for the first time. Each ‘cluster’ combines keynote presentations from established industry experts and emerging voices, panel discussions, and practical workshops for attendees – covering hot-button topics like sustainable aviation, AI in tourism, and next-generation marketing.

New additions to the 2025 programme include:

A half-day aviation conference addressing industry challenges and opportunities

The Africa Tourism Investment Conference in partnership with JLL

A youth development section focusing on career opportunities and skills development for young adults in tourism as well as a special session highlighting young African leaders in tourism

In addition, attendees can expect:

An exclusive ‘State of the Industry’ report

Interactive ‘brain box’ sessions for skills development and knowledge sharing

Facilitated connections between buyers, suppliers, potential partners and media professionals

According to De Jager, WTM Africa 2024 achieved a 53% increase in attendees compared to 2023, with representation from 88 countries across the world. “But perhaps most exciting, is the number of SMMEs and industry newcomers that showed interest,” says De Jager. “The future of African tourism is bright – and WTM Africa is the perfect platform for those looking to connect with both tourism titans and pioneers. It’s the place to be if you want to learn, network, and celebrate the diversity and opportunity in our industry.”

WTM Africa is one of the cornerstones of Africa Travel Week and De Jager recommends that both visitors and media register their interest as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

This sentiment is shared by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis: “We cannot wait to welcome travel and tourism professionals from around the world to Cape Town for the World Travel Market Africa in April. This event has established itself as the premier travel and tourism expo on the continent and is key to unlocking African tourism’s enormous potential. It certainly means the world to us here in Cape Town. If the popularity and growth of the last WTM Africa is anything to go by, the 2025 event looks set to be the biggest and most well attended to date. I encourage all prospective delegates and exhibitors to register their interest sooner rather than later to ensure they don’t miss out.”

As Hill-Lewis mentions, early exhibitor registration is important. “Stands are in high demand,” says De Jager. “Potential exhibitors need to get in touch as soon as possible as space on our floor plan is running out. Chat to us about availability – and about pre-scheduling meetings with sought-after buyers and suppliers.”

For those in the business of luxury tourism, ILTM Africa is scheduled from 6-8 April at the Norval Foundation in Cape Town.

“It’s a new venue for ILTM Africa,” explains De Jager. “We’re celebrating art as a key component of luxury tourism and expect some of the world’s top-tier travel experience providers and international buyers with high buying power. As an invite-only event it is advised that exhibitors register their interest as early as possible!”

Attendees at WTM Africa 2025 can also attend concurrent events like Incentives, Business Travel & Meetings (IBTM Africa); EQUAL Africa powered by IGLTA; and Travel Tech at no extra charge.

“WTM Africa is made possible through our partnerships with the City of Cape Town, the Cape Town International Conference Centre and Lift Airlines,” concludes De Jager. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the Mother City – and show-off Africa’s tourism industry in the most exciting week of the year.”
