Norwegian Cruise Line® (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, has unveiled photos of reimagined spaces and additions to Norwegian Jade® and Norwegian Gem®, including the brand-new adults-only Vibe Beach Club and an enhanced Thermal Suite in the award-winning Mandara Spa and Salon.

“Listening to our guests and delivering exceptional experiences across our fleet is at the heart of what we do,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “These recent transformations bring some of our most beloved amenities to Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Gem, creating greater consistency across our fleet while giving guests more ways to personalise their vacation — from adults-only outdoor spaces to serene relaxation areas designed to help them unwind at sea.”

Expanded Thermal Suite Experiences at Mandara Spa & Salon

Redesigned with guest feedback in mind, the refreshed Thermal Suite aboard Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Gem now feature three times as many of the popular hot tile loungers, a more centralised layout with an upgraded reception area, updated steam rooms and saunas, and new relaxing and reinvigorating experiences, including:

A Charcoal Sauna thatutilises a radiant heat system with an outer charcoal layer with potential benefits of boosting circulation and releasing toxins from the body. Its warming properties reduce muscle stiffness and tension.

An Ice Room with cold air invigorates the respiratory tract.

The Salt Room benefitsskin health and induces deep relaxation.

An IV Lounge, which has become an increasingly popular treatment to quickly deliver essential nutrients to the body.

Four-Senses Loungers providethe ultimate sensory experience for deep relaxation and tranquility.

Additionally, Norwegian Jade offers brand-new Experiential Showers, featuring multiple water jets and lighting effects to help invigorate the body, as well as a Plunge Pool for brief cold-water immersion to accelerate muscle recovery, boost circulation and leave guests feeling refreshed and revitalised. Norwegian Gem provides an updated hot tub and Thalassotherapy pool which uses massage jets, bubble loungers and countercurrents to detoxify the body and soothe joint pain.

Debut of Popular Adults-Only Vibe Beach Club & Starbucks

Both Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Gem now provide an adults-only respite with the guest-favourite Vibe Beach Club, repurposing the existing sundeck on deck 14. This exclusive outdoor oasis offers expansive ocean views, a private full-service bar, an additional hot tub, over 50 premium lounge chairs and seven new private cabanas for guests to unwind in style.

As the first in the cruise industry to offer the world’s most recognised coffee brand – Starbucks® – across its entire fleet and private destinations, NCL adds an all-new licensed store aboard Norwegian Jade, making it easy for guests to enjoy the same favourite hot and cold handcrafted beverages, seasonal blends and sweet and savory food items as they do at their neighborhood store.

Summer Escapes to Europe and Alaska

Now through late summer 2026, Norwegian Jade offers a series of seven-day sailings from Vancouver, British Columbia and Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska with scenic cruising through the Inside Passage and glacier regions, as well as visits to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, Alaska. Meanwhile, aboard Norwegian Gem, guests can dive into the rich history and vibrant culture of the Mediterranean and Greek Isles on a variety of voyages departing from Rome (Civitavecchia) or Venice (Ravenna), Italy while visiting ports such as Cannes, France; Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy; Split and Dubrovnik, Croatia; and some of the most sought-after islands in Greece. As the year progresses into late 2026, Norwegian Gem offers fun-in-sun cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas from Tampa, Fla., while Norwegian Jade returns to Asia for immersive, bucket-list worthy voyages.

From ship to shore, today’s cruises offer an unforgettable cultural journey

When Nirosha Sidat, Country Manager (Africa) for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), observes that “more and more guests are looking for an experience rather than booking a destination”, she’s describing a fundamental shift in how today’s passengers travel by sea. Modern cruises are no longer a floating hotel that deposits you at famous landmarks – they’re a bridge connecting onboard experiences with the living, breathing communities that make each port so distinctive.

For South African travellers it’s a compelling way to see the world, one where you embrace lifelong learning, explore like a local and dine like a king.

And it’s not limited to expedition-style cruises with resident botanists, biologists or historians on board either. Your 2026 cruise to the Med, Eastern Europe or the Caribbean might just offer far more than meets the eye.

Balancing luxury and learning

The age of the “floating hotel” is giving way to a more profound travel philosophy. Cruise lines are expertly balancing the traditional allure of a luxury holiday with an increasing demand for intellectual and cultural enrichment. Guests are not merely spectators (gazing out from the bow or lazing at the pool); they are active participants in a journey of discovery. This trend of “immersive travel,” or deeply understanding a destination by slowing down and getting a real taste of its local culture, is gaining significant popularity.

But what does this actually look like on board? Sidat explains that cruises now include expert-led lectures, documentaries and workshops.

“It’s about combining the thrill of exploring new horizons with the quiet satisfaction of learning something new. It could be lectures on history, language or geology or even hands-on art workshops and cooking classes. Each designed to enrich your understanding of a destination – and enhance shore excursions.”

Cultural dining

While expansive breakfasts and family-friendly buffets are still an important part of the cruise experience, specialist restaurants and guest chefs are now firmly on the menu. For Sidat, it’s a celebration of global flavours and local heritage – one that allows guests to embark on a gastronomic adventure linked to the regions they visit.

This means that a Mediterranean cruise might offer locally sourced menus and regional dishes, or a Caribbean voyage may feature flavours that echo vibrant island culture.

NCL’s Free at Sea package – now back by popular demand – gives guests unparalleled value. For example, on a standard seven-night cruise, Free at Sea delivers: unlimited open bar with premium spirits, 150 minutes of high-speed internet, shore credits and three multi-course specialty dining experiences for the first and second guest on the reservation.

And there is plenty to choose from, including premium steakhouses, French bistros, hibachi-style venues, authentic Italian cuisine and so much more.

“Our Free at Sea package covers what matters most to guests,” says Sidat. “Yes, that means a comprehensive drinks package and free Wi-Fi, but it also makes cultural exploration that more accessible, enriching and affordable!”

Go local

Of course, it all culminates in extraordinary shore excursions. The kind facilitated by local guides, allowing guests to fully engage with indigenous communities, explore natural wonders, and visit areas that were once considered out of reach for the typical cruise tourist.

Turkey, for example, brings the opportunity to cross two continents in one day, wander Istanbul’s ancient neighbourhoods, rest beneath a 700-year-old plane tree and taste Kanlica’s legendary yoghurt – sweet, simple, unforgettable – before the ship calls you back.

In Santorini you might find yourself sipping coffee in Pyrgos, wandering Megalochori’s winding alleys and cobbled lanes, before making music at the Museum of Musical Instruments (where you’ll learn how bouzoukis are handcrafted and try playing one yourself). Best of all? You can cap it off at generations-old Gavalas Winery, tasting traditional wine perfectly paired with local meze.

Slovenia, meanwhile, promises a fragrant herb garden on a 19th-century farm – and traditional Slovenian dishes shared over local stories and sweeping views.

Time to explore

Importantly, today’s cruises also give you plenty of free time to explore new ports and vibrant cities.

Sidat explains that NCL sails from many of Europe’s most iconic cities, including Barcelona, Lisbon, Portugal, Rome, Athens, Copenhagen, Denmark and others.

“In 2026, NCL will have nine ships sailing across the Med, Greek Isles and North Europe regions, including Norwegian Viva, one of our newest ships,” says Sidat. “These itineraries let you explore multiple countries in a single voyage, with extended port stays that give you real time to discover culturally rich destinations.”

A bold, hit-driven tribute to the trailblazing and universally adored Elton John, “Rocket Man: A Celebration of Elton John” is an electrifying production featuring powerhouse vocals, jaw-dropping choreography, and fashion-forward costumes that pay homage to Elton’s signature style. Set on a concert-inspired stage with vibrant LED visuals and stunning scenic design including four different grand pianos, the show immerses guests in the music and spirit of one of the most iconic performers of all time. Guests will be delighted with archival footage of the singer’s iconic performances throughout the years, as well as interactive elements to immerse viewers into the extraordinary show.

With over 300 million records sold, more than 70 top 40 hits, and a career spanning five decades, Elton is the most successful solo male artist in U.S. chart history; now, his legendary catalogue comes to life only on NCL for global audiences like never before.

“Rocket Man: A Celebration of Elton John” is brought to life by a visionary creative team whose credits span the Halftime Show for the Big Game, Cirque du Soleil®, and global music tours. Led by choreographer and creative director Katy Tate; creative director and Emmy® Award-winning choreographer Tabitha D’umo; scenic designer Kley Tarcitano; and costume designer Sky Switser, they have crafted one of the most dynamic productions ever staged at sea.

HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder

Inspired by the celestial spirit of Norwegian Luna, “HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder” is an otherworldly new production that blends cutting-edge 3D mapping, multi-sensory video projection and a fully original score exclusive to NCL that transports guests to a futuristic world.

For the first time ever, NCL introduces an original character, HIKO, whom guests can encounter throughout Norwegian Luna in an interactive meet-and-greet experience that brings the magic of the show to life beyond the stage. The production features four elite gymnasts—the most ever in an NCL show—performing gravity-defying acts. These thrilling performances are set against a backdrop of mesmerizing visuals and sci-fi-inspired costumes designed by Guy Brassard, a longtime collaborator with Cirque du Soleil.

Sea of Discovery! An Under-the-Sea Festival: A New Era of Family Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line is proud to introduce “Sea of Discovery! An Under-the-Sea Festival,” a first-of-its-kind original experience developed in-house and curated specifically for children. Inspired by nostalgic field day activities, this enchanting event follows an inquisitive fish on an interactive adventure through the ocean. With glow games, whimsical costumes, awe-inspiring visuals, “Sea of Discovery! An Under-the-Sea Festival” invites families to play, learn and connect in a hands-on showcase of imagination.

A Brand-New Rock-N-Roll Show and Live Entertainment

Following the success and popularity of “Syd Norman’s Presents: Rumours,” Norwegian Luna will boast a brand-new show, “Syd Norman’s Presents: A Tribute to Eagles,” bringing classic rock anthems and the spirit of the 1970s to the mainstage in the Luna Theatre for more guests to enjoy.

Separately, the Syd Norman’s Pour House bar and entertainment space inspired by L.A.’s notorious 1960s rock scene is getting an upgrade aboard Norwegian Luna with exciting new additions, including a throwback ‘90s set and Live Band Karaoke.

LunaTique – A Daring New Party Experience for Adults

Making its debut on Norwegian Luna, “LunaTique” will be the ship’s exclusive production for guests 21 and older at The Improv at Sea, a returning favourite and intimate venue for NCL’s comedy shows. Inspired by the thrill, sparkle, and nonstop energy of Las Vegas nightlife, this striking, after-hours experience features neon aesthetics, signature cocktails, and character-driven performances.

Classic circus archetypes—ringmasters, acrobats, clowns, and strongmen—are reimagined as edgy, fashion-forward personas in a pop-infused show designed for unforgettable nights at sea. Costume design by Brooklyn-based duo James Nguyen and A.C. Gottlieb, known for their inventive, theatrical work with rising pop star Chappell Roan, bring a fresh, contemporary edge to the production, which will make “LunaTique” one of the most visually striking and stylistically daring experiences aboard Norwegian Luna.

Reimagined Guest Favourites and Signature Events

Building on the success of First Night, the high-energy welcome aboard show that was first introduced on Norwegian Bliss® and Norwegian Encore®, Norwegian Luna presents a reimagined kickoff celebration in the Luna Theatre that showcases the entertainment lineup guests will experience on their voyage ahead through a montage of performances.

The Luna Theatre & Club, like the Theatre & Club aboard Norwegian Aqua®, Norwegian Prima® and Norwegian Viva®, will transform from a three-story theatre to a three-story Vegas-style nightclub featuring an expansive dance floor, an enhanced and interactive chandelier, state-of-the-art lighting, and more. Boasting two different bars, the Luna Theatre & Club will showcase all nightclub programming including the new Norwegian Luna Eclipse Party, which is a festival-inspired glow party that draws from global nightlife trends, featuring eye-catching visuals and an upbeat soundtrack. The ship will also debut “Planetdisco” which will transport guests to an electrifying world of classic disco with a lively ensemble of performers to dance the night away.

NCL is also ramping up the deck parties aboard Norwegian Luna with two all-new party concepts:

Island Nights brings the vibrant spirit of the islands to life with a modern pop edge at sea.

Latin LIVE! will heat up the pool deck with multiple percussionists, a live band and dynamic vocalists as well as live dance performances that will have everyone on their feet all night long.

“Creating the entertainment lineup for Norwegian Luna has been an incredible and fulfilling journey,” added Bryan White, vice president of entertainment production at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “We’re fortunate to partner with the most innovative and respected creators in the industry, so we can keep raising the bar and giving our guests the world-class entertainment NCL is known for. From captivating tribute concerts to awe-inspiring original productions, our lineup has something for guests of all ages, delivering unforgettable experiences for everyone aboard.”

The 2024 Cape to St Helena Yacht Race fleet has returned to Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), completing an epic 1,700-nautical-mile journey across the South Atlantic that tested crews’ resilience and sailing prowess. The race, which departed Cape Town on December 28, stands as one of the most challenging offshore adventures available to both amateur and seasoned sailors in the region.

Flica, skippered by veteran sailor Rijk Kuttel, claimed overall victory and the coveted Governor’s Cup Trophy with a corrected time of 11 days, 23 hours, 21 minutes. In an exhilarating finish, Atalanta, co-skippered by Gerry Hegie and Heye Daun, secured Line Honours as first to cross the finish line.

“This race exemplified the true spirit of ocean racing – combining fierce competition with remarkable camaraderie,” said David Garrard, RCYC Vice Commodore and Race Chairman. “The fleet demonstrated exceptional seamanship throughout, facing everything from challenging light winds at the start to testing Atlantic conditions.”

Key highlights:

· Seven-year-old twins Peter and Vera Halling aboard Magic Dragon became the youngest competitors in race history, winning the Ambrose Family Trophy.

· A nail-biting final sprint between Flica and Atalanta created one of the closest finishes in the event’s 28-year history.

The eight-boat fleet experienced varying weather conditions during their 10- to 13-day crossing, showcasing both tactical decision-making and endurance. Upon reaching St Helena, competitors were welcomed as honoured guests, with Governor Nigel Phillips hosting a gala dinner at historic Plantation House.

“The hospitality shown by the Saints was extraordinary,” said Line Honours winner Heye Daun. “St Helena offers a special combination of sailing challenge and cultural experience that makes this race truly one-of-a-kind.”

During their island stay, crews explored Napoleon’s exile residence, hiked volcanic peaks, and enjoyed world-class snorkelling, cementing the race’s reputation as both a competitive event and an unforgettable adventure.

The island remains a bucket-list destination for many, explains Matt Joshua, Head of Tourism for St Helena. “It’s always a privilege to welcome visitors to St Helena, by boat or by air! We know the island has captured their hearts and we hope to welcome them – plus families and friends – back soon!”

Several key partners supported the race, including Groot Constantia Wine Estate – South Africa’s oldest wine estate, which provided commemorative individually-boxed bottles of prized wine – along with MACS Shipping, Zed Core, Southern Ropes, and Associated Rigging.

“The success of this race relies on our generous sponsors, who share our vision for adventure and excellence – a big thank you to each and every one of them,” noted Garrard.

Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for the 2026 edition. “We’re seeing growing international interest in this unique ocean racing challenge,” said Garrard. “The combination of competitive sailing, adventure, and the chance to visit one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands creates an irresistible draw for sailors worldwide.”

The next Cape to St Helena Race is scheduled for December 2026. For race information and entry details, visit www.capetosthelena.co.za.

Cruising continues to grow as a go-to travel choice for South Africans, delivering luxury and unmatched value for money – and with new ships, experiences, and itineraries debuting in 2025, there’s never been a better time to plan a holiday at sea.

Sue Garrett, GM Supply, Pricing and Marketing at Flight Centre Travel Group South Africa, attributes this growth to the all-inclusive value and accessibility of cruising.

“Local cruises, particularly MSC’s Durban- and Cape Town-based options, remain incredibly popular for first-time cruisers or those on a budget, due to their affordability, ease and convenience, after all, it’s a great way to avoid a long-haul flight as well as the costs of travel visas!”, says Garrett.

According to Garrett, cruises proved popular with both couples and families in 2024.

“On international cruises, our split was 65% couples, 28% families, 5% solo travellers, and 2% groups,” says Garrett. “We saw very similar figures on domestic cruises, with couples making up 62% of cruisers followed by families (29%), solo travellers (6%) and groups (3%). Interestingly, our average length of cruise was 10 days, with cruisers really embracing time on the ocean!”

Read on, because Garrett has the inside scoop for those looking to ‘seas the day’ in 2025!

What’s new in cruises for 2025?

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

More at Sea Package (debuting January 2025): NCL is simplifying its offerings with the all-new ‘More at Sea’ package, which replaces their ‘Free at Sea’ programme.

Premium drinks: Guests can now enjoy an expanded selection of beverages, including over 100 specialty cocktails.

Specialty restaurants: Indulge in more meals at specialty restaurants.

Improved internet access: Make the most of additional minutes and faster Wi-Fi.

“NCL’s new ‘More at Sea’ package does exactly what it says: it delivers more value than ever before. It also simplifies the experience for guests, making it easier for them to relax and enjoy their cruise,” says Garrett.

Norwegian Aqua Launch (March 2025): The cutting-edge Norwegian Aqua will feature:

The world’s first Aqua Slidecoaster, an exhilarating mash-up of a waterslide and rollercoaster.

Expanded family-friendly zones with recreational activities.

NCL’s first-ever upmarket Thai specialty restaurant, Sukhothai, and first plant-based eatery, Planterie, debuting on board.

MSC Cruises

South African favourites: South Africans love MSC’s themed cruises, and they’re back with a bang in 2025!

Super Sokkie Cruise (21–24 February 2025): Who doesn’t adore that ‘local is lekker’ vibe, complete with energetic sokkie music and dancing?

Bhangra Boat (28 February – 3 March 2025): Bollywood-themed festivities promising world-class entertainment.

Jazz Cruise (16–22 March 2025): Coinciding with the inaugural Namib Desert International Jazz Festival, this voyage is a must for jazz fans and desert adventurers.

Costa Cruises

Cape Town cruises: For the first time, Costa Cruises will offer departures directly from Cape Town, making it easier for South Africans to embark on exciting global itineraries with this respected cruise line. For example, Cape Town to Genoa (20 days) departs 18 March 2025, with stops in Walvis Bay, Tenerife, Tangier, and Corsica.

Royal Caribbean International

Debut of Star of the Seas (August 2025): The second ship in the Icon Class, Star of the Seas will feature:

Category 6 Waterpark and Crown’s Edge aerial adventure.

New Broadway hit, Back to the Future: The Musical.

Eight unique ‘neighbourhoods’.

Allure of the Seas refurbishments (April 2025): This $100 million upgrade introduces:

The Lime & Coconut Bar and Perfect Storm water slides.

Redesigned spaces for kids/teens, including Social298 and Splashaway Bay.

Princess Cruises

Star Princess Launch (October 2025): Marking the second Sphere Class ship, Star Princess will have:

Eco-friendly LNG propulsion systems.

The Dome – the first at-sea geodesic dome.

Expanded non-smoking casino areas.

Emerging cruise trends for 2025

Digital detox cruises: Wi-Fi may be improving across fleets, but 2025 will see an increase in cruises designed to help travellers disconnect and unwind.

Culinary-focused voyages: Food-themed cruises are big right now. Expect ships to offer more local ingredients, specialty menus, special guest celebrity chefs, and cooking workshops.

Women-only cruises: These cruises, like Uniworld River Cruises’ women-only cruise, have a strict ‘no boys allowed’ policy – designed for women, by women.

Workations cruises: When you can work from anywhere, why not work at sea? Just check on your chosen cruise line/ship’s Wi-Fi quality and cost (if applicable) before booking!

River cruising: Smaller and often more personal, river cruises are also on the rise.

“2025 is an excellent time to hop aboard the cruising trend. First-time cruisers can start small with affordable, local cruises, while seasoned at-sea holidaymakers can look forward to various upgrades, along with longer, multi-continent itineraries. As the industry continues its climb, travellers can rest assured there’s a cruise itinerary out there to float everyone’s boat!” Garrett concludes.

As a charismatic and relatable celebrity figure, Stonestreet brings joy to audiences through his humour. Similarly, NCL brings joy to its guests with the variety of elevated experiences that empower guests to have their own best vacation with more of what they love across its 19-ship fleet and the 450 destinations it visits around the world.

“We are very excited to officially welcome Eric Stonestreet to the NCL team!” said David J. Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line. “We had an amazing time with Eric on one of our ships, and also got to spend some time with his charming family after. Over the past couple of months, Eric has become a true friend of NCL. Eric’s authenticity, wit, charm and genuine desire to bring happiness to the masses embodies the role of godfather for Norwegian Aqua, as well as who we are and what we stand for as a company. We are honoured to have Eric as the godfather of Norwegian Aqua!”

Stonestreet will play a pivotal role in officially welcoming the beautiful new Norwegian Aqua to NCL’s fleet as the ship’s godfather. On April 13, 2025, in Miami, also known as the Cruise Capital of the World, Stonestreet will lead the time-honoured tradition of christening the vessel by breaking a champagne bottle across its bow, a classic maritime custom performed by the ship’s godparent. This act is meant to bring good fortune for the life of the vessel and all the passengers that may sail on her throughout her journeys.

“Travelling the world to meet new people and explore new places is something I love to do, and after recently experiencing what Norwegian has to offer, I can attest that Norwegian truly makes it easy to do more of what I enjoy while on vacation,” said Eric Stonestreet, two-time Emmy® Award-winning actor. “I am honoured to be named the godfather of Norwegian Aqua and to play my part in the journey of bringing this new ship to life. I am blown away by what’s in store for Norwegian Aqua and I cannot wait to take a ride on the Aqua Slidecoaster, indulge in some red curry at the all-new Sukhothai and most importantly create lifelong memories with my own family while on board this innovative new ship.”

After completing her christening voyage, Norwegian Aqua will depart on seven-day itineraries from one of the most popular cruise ports, Port Canaveral, Fla. beginning April 26, 2025. These fun-in-sun Caribbean voyages include calls to the beautiful island destinations of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas which will feature a brand-new pier in late 2025. Following the ship’s first cruise season, Norwegian Aqua will offer five and seven-day voyages to Bermuda from New York City from August 2025 through October 2025, and from May 2026 to October 2026. Norwegian Aqua will return to Miami to sail five and seven-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from October 2025 through April 2026 and from November 2026 to March 2027.

As the first ship in NCL’s Prima Plus Class, Norwegian Aqua will boast even more elevated amenities and experiences, including the Aqua Slidecoaster, a first-of-its-kind hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide that will become the longest and fastest slide at sea. The ship will also feature a new high-tech digital sports complex, the Glow Court, brilliantly engineered for immersive play as well as the Aqua Game Zone, a reimagined version of the Company’s beloved Galaxy Pavilion and arcade offerings. Additionally, Norwegian Aqua is home to NCL’s first-ever Three-Bedroom Duplex suites within The Haven by Norwegian®, the Brand’s premium keycard-access-only-complex, with an expansive, dedicated sundeck; a serene infinity pool overlooking the ship’s stern; a private lounge and bar pouring rare spirits and vintages; and sweeping sea views available from every public space. Guests will also be able to indulge in a variety of bars and restaurants including the new upscale Thai specialty restaurant, Sukhothai; the plant-based eatery in Indulge Food Hall, Planterie; and the contemporary wine lounge, Swirl Wine Bar.

For guests planning their next cruise holiday aboard Norwegian Aqua, or any ship in NCL’s fleet for sailings beginning on Jan. 1, 2025, the Company’s all-new package, More At Sea, offers travellers more value with an unlimited open bar featuring more premium beverage brands, more specialty dining credits and more Wi-Fi minutes with faster, high-speed internet powered by Starlink.
The iconic Cape to St Helena Yacht Race is set to continue yacht racing history between the Island and The Cape, with eight vessels confirmed for the December 28 start. The 1,700 nautical mile journey from Cape Town will culminate in a prestigious prize-giving ceremony at the Governor’s official residence, Plantation House, on January 10, 2025.

The event kicks off at the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) with the traditional Blue Peter party on 23 December with family, friends and supporters – setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating race across the South Atlantic.

The impressive lineup includes Tintin (skippered by Di Hutton-Squire), defending her title as winner of the last race in 2022, Umoya (skippered by Pete Martin), Atalanta (skippered by Heye Daun & Gerry Hegie), Flica (skippered by Rijk Kuttel), Magnus (skippered by Evert Groenewald), Fryd (skippered by Jarl Spandow), Magic Dragon (skippered by Rod Halling), and Mwera (skippered by Ashley Verhulp).

This year’s race continues the rich 28-year history of the yacht race from the waters of the Cape to Jamestown, St Helena, says David Garrard, Vice Commodore of the RCYC and chairman of the 2024 organising committee: “Originally called the Governor’s Cup, this epic race represents not just interest and growth in competitive sailing, but also showcases the RCYC’s commitment to fostering world-class sailing events that challenge and inspire our members.”

Matt Joshua, Head of Tourism for St Helena, emphasises the island’s significance in Atlantic sailing: “St Helena has long been a crucial stopping point for Atlantic crossings, with a rich maritime heritage dating back centuries. We’re thrilled to welcome these competitive sailing teams to our shores and share our unique island culture with them!”

The Cape to St Helena Yacht Race is one of only a handful of races that finish at a remote island destination – and it’s a big part of what makes this race so special. Beyond the test of skill, challenging conditions, stiff competition and camaraderie, St Helena offers competitors the chance to explore its heritage, dramatic landscapes, and warm hospitality in a post-race adventure like no other.

“The magic of St Helena is undeniable,” says Garrard. “We know it adds to the allure of the race, and it has become a bucket-list goal for many.”

For travellers keen on exploring this once-in-a-lifetime destination, Airlink offers a weekly flight service from Johannesburg (JNB) to St Helena Island (HLE), with a seasonal flight from Cape Town added between December and March 2025. Flight tickets are available on flyairlink.com and through all IATA-registered travel agents – take the plunge and explore the island’s history, discover the island’s unique plant and bird life, take on any of the ‘21 postbox walks’ and engage in exciting marine and adventure activities with the local ‘Saints’ who can’t wait to share St Helena Island with the world!

On April 16, 2026, Norwegian Jewel® will commence seven-to-nine-day cruises to Bermuda, launching the city as a new cruise destination. Departing from the SouthPort Marine Terminal Complex, where plans are currently underway with the local government to develop a facility to welcome cruisers in 2026, Norwegian Jewel’s Bermuda itineraries will feature overnight calls to Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda, providing guests more time to enjoy and discover the island’s turquoise blue waters and pink-sand beaches. This new homeport for NCL will provide residents in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region more access to cruising, as it will be the only cruise line sailing from Philadelphia through Oct. 17, 2026.

“We remain committed to delivering more experiences for our guests to create unforgettable memories, so they can vacation better with us,” said David J. This new service rounds out the portfolio of services offered at PhilaPort, and we look forward to this next phase of growth.”

The Company’s new 2026 spring/summer season includes nearly 250 itineraries for nine of its soon-to-be 20 ships. Embarking from U.S. and Canadian ports between April and November 2026, these voyages will call to 30 unique destinations across the Caribbean, Bermuda, Bahamas, Canada and New England, as well as Alaska. With an average of 10 hours in port, guests can choose to enjoy the picture-perfect beaches, colourful cities and vibrant culture of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda; enjoy the rustic Autumn foliage of Canada and New England; or dive deep into the pristine nature and abundant wilderness found in Alaska.

Herrera continued, “Our new 2026 spring/summer deployment further meets the holiday demands of our guests with more shorter cruise offerings to fun-in-the-sun destinations, such as the Bahamas and the Caribbean, as well as a variety of longer itineraries to bucket list destinations, such as Alaska.”

Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, has revealed the next chapter in its culinary story as it highlights new Relaxed Yet Refined dining venues aboard its eight small, luxurious ships.

New sushi and Indian cuisine offerings at Terrace Café and a revamped poolside lunch menu at Waves Grill are in the spotlight as the line redefines The Finest Cuisine at Sea.

Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises, commented: “Food is the foundation of what we do on board each of our ships, and globally, in the destinations we visit. We are renowned for serving The Finest Cuisine at Sea, as it is at the very core of our business.

“This does not always mean a white linen tablecloth and starched napkins at one of our award-winning specialty restaurants – finest does not always mean the fanciest. It’s also a perfectly prepared pizza or an enticing burrata dish enjoyed al fresco with a crisp glass of white wine as you set sail.”

Bernhard Klotz, Vice President of Food and Beverage, added: “Beauty lies in the simplicity of how we create The Finest Cuisine at Sea; the perfect combination of the most innovative culinary team, the freshest ingredients, and the best food-centric ships, this is where the magic lies.

“Food brings people together, food brings joy; we are here to ensure that every bite of every meal makes our guests smile – from a decadent ice cream sundae by the pool to an exquisite soufflé – The Finest Cuisine at Sea is everywhere on board our ships.”

With the addition of a daily sushi station as well as an Indian Corner in Terrace Café, the venue’s impressive array of international cuisines expands even further. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Terrace Café is the center of the line’s relaxed dining options.

The expansive sushi station boasts 45 brand-new recipes, created by Oceania Cruises’ newly appointed Executive Culinary Directors, Chefs Alex Quaretti and Eric Barale, along with their talented team. These include two types of sashimi per day, two types of uramaki, three kinds of nigiri, and a daily vegetarian option.

The new Indian Corner operates once every cruise during dinner service and features 15 authentic Indian recipes.

“Our staff hails from every corner of the globe and being able to bring their knowledge and their experience to the table, literally, is a wonderful thing,” said Chef Alex. “Creating the new Indian dishes for Terrace Café is a perfect example of this; some of these recipes have been handed down through generations. It’s a privilege to be able to see them through a new lens and to bring them to new audiences. The butter chicken and the dhal are already proving to be popular choices with our guests.”

Waves Grill, Oceania Cruises’ poolside relaxed lunch venue, allows guests to experience the acclaimed culinary reputation of the cruise line without leaving their lounge chairs if they so wish. The menu has been revamped offering new favourites to sample alongside well-loved signature dishes, which have become the venue’s hallmark.

The menu now features more than 20 revised options, including a new selection of cold sandwiches, plus hot sandwiches and burgers. These include the signature Surf & Turf Wagyu burger; a wagyu beef patty with lobster medallions and truffle mayonnaise; and a new Philly Cheesesteak hot sandwich comprising shredded sirloin steak, provolone, sautéed onion, bell peppers and mushrooms. All are now served with a choice of French fries or sweet potato fries.

“At each of our relaxed yet refined venues, our guests can still savour the ritual and theatre of a dining experience. You can linger, relax, and enjoy. Guests are not rushed through, these are absolutely not “fast” food options; it’s simply a different ambiance and setting,” explained Chef Alex.

Not to overlook the line’s award-winning specialty restaurants, Chefs Alex and Eric and their team have more surprises to share before the end of the year as they take a thorough review of all menus across all ships.

Chef Alex said: “We have so much going on ahead of the launch of Allura in just over a year. But there are exciting plans afoot for all our ships. We have new dishes to unveil in Red Ginger, our signature pan-Asian venue; there will be an expansion of Oceania Cruises’ exclusive wine pairing luncheon options; and a fresh look at the menus for the grande dame of the line’s dining venues, The Grand Dining Room.”

Additional information

Marina and her sister, Riviera, were the very first true foodie ships in the world, joined now by Vista in 2023, and Allura in 2025, and were the first ships ever to have an onboard cooking school. They have more galley space and more fresh food storage than any other ship, and they were built around the galleys in the shipyard.

Oceania Cruises has the highest percentage of culinary personnel devoted to the dining experience than any other cruise company. To ensure the impeccable quality of each dish, the line has one chef for every ten guests; half of the crew on board is dedicated to the cooking or serving of food.
