By Carol Weaving, RX Africa Managing Director

When discussions turn to Africa’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the conversation almost always lands on the same subject: funding. Access to finance is a persistent problem but treating it as the defining obstacle misses something bigger. Most businesses aren’t held back by capital alone. They’re held back by a lack of access to buyers, to distribution networks, to strategic partners, and to the international markets where real growth occurs.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is gradually changing the trading environment, but opening borders doesn’t automatically connect businesses with the opportunities on the other side. The question is no longer whether opportunity exists, but how we can get more businesses in front of it.

Part of the answer lies in live exhibitions and trade shows. At RX, we run over 400 recurring events across 43 sectors in 22 countries, giving us a rare perspective on how businesses succeed in the right environment. What we’re also seeing consistently is how exhibitions are evolving from marketing platforms into one of the most effective and practical tools available for accelerating SME growth at scale.

Closing the access gap

For decades, exhibitions were regarded primarily as brand-building exercises. Useful for visibility, but peripheral to serious commercial strategy. That perception no longer holds, and the numbers from our own portfolio make the case: 70% of RX exhibitors are SMEs arriving to engage directly with decision-makers, test new markets, and accelerate relationships that might otherwise take years to build through conventional channels.

Zooming out, UFI’s 2026 Global Exhibition Industry Statistics confirms Africa’s exhibition industry attracts around 2.1 million visitors and 45,000 exhibiting companies annually, generating an estimated €1.3 billion (approximately US$1.5 billion) in economic output and supporting more than 21,000 jobs across the continent. Those figures speak to the industry’s scale, but they don’t fully capture what happens in the spaces between stands, in the scheduled meetings and corridor conversations where commercial relationships are actually forged.

The value of a single well-placed conversation should not be underestimated. A brief exchange between a supplier and a regional distributor can open the door to an agreement, an export contract, or an investment relationship that changes a business’s trajectory entirely. For an entrepreneur who has exhausted local demand, that is not just useful, it’s transformational.

Funding alone isn’t enough

This dynamic is especially significant in Africa, where access challenges run deeper than balance sheets. The informal sector accounts for nearly 40% of the continent’s GDP, according to the African Development Bank’s African Economic Outlook 2026. Many of these businesses will never access traditional funding channels, but they can still benefit enormously from direct exposure to customers, buyers, and commercial networks, and that is precisely the gap trade events are positioned to help close.

Funding gaps are vast and well-documented, which is precisely why access infrastructure matters so much. The global shortfall for formal SMEs stands at US$5.7 trillion, according to the Alliance for Financial Inclusion. Africa’s share is estimated at approximately US$331 billion. In South Africa, a market with a relatively sophisticated financial system and strong levels of private sector credit, the gap is believed to sit between R350 billion and R386 billion.

These numbers are often treated as the whole story. But they only tell half of it. Even where financing gaps close, a business with no route to buyers, distributors or export markets still won’t grow. Capital without customers is inert. Growth rarely happens in isolation. It happens at the point of connection, and that is the piece the finance conversation consistently leaves out.

Supporting Africa’s growth agenda

Across Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa alone, there are an estimated 52 million SMEs contributing up to 50% of national GDPs and employing as much as 93% of the workforce in some markets. These businesses are the backbone of African economies, driving innovation, creating jobs, and supporting local communities. Yet many continue to struggle to scale.

Africa’s entrepreneurs are not lacking in talent or determination. What many lack is the infrastructure of opportunity – the channels, networks, and platforms that connect potential to growth.

Exhibitions are not a panacea, and we don’t position them as one. They do not replace the need for better financing mechanisms, improved infrastructure, or more enabling policy environments. But they offer the ability to bring entire business ecosystems into a single space, at a single moment, at scale, which is something no funding programme or regulatory reform can fully replicate. The trade show floor has always been where business relationships begin. Increasingly across Africa, it is also where the continent’s SMEs are finding their next customer, their first export order, and their path to growth.

The Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA) has renewed its partnership with the Good Life Show Africa 2026, taking place in Cape Town at the CTICC from 29 to 31 May, and in Johannesburg at the Sandton Convention Centre from 18 to 20 September, aligning the collaboration with a broader industry effort to accelerate sustainable hospitality practice across the region. Through the partnership, FEDHASA members will receive preferential access to both editions of the event, along with a 15% discount on attendance, giving operators a direct route into one of the continent’s most significant sustainability and conscious living platforms.

Research from the EHL Group’s Food and Well-being Trend Report 2025 shows that between 60% and 70% of consumers now expect food-service operators to offer meals that are both healthy and sustainably sourced.Yet, according to Africa Travel Week’s 2026 State of African Tourism Report, only 4.3% of Southern and East African properties currently hold third-party sustainability certification. The gap between market expectation and industry delivery is wide, and closing it requires access to the right suppliers, frameworks, knowledge, and conversations.

“Our role is to create the conditions in which our members can thrive. Sustainable food, beverage, and wellness are dramatically influencing guest choices, buyer decisions, and investment criteria right now. Our partnership with The Good Life Show Africa is just one of the ways we’re ensuring FEDHASA members have access to the platforms and partnerships they need to move forward with confidence,” said Lee-Anne Singer, FEDHASA Cape Chair.

The urgency is underscored by the EU’s Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (Directive 2024/825), which becomes binding across European member states from 27 September 2026. European buyers will be required to substantiate every sustainability claim made about the destinations and properties they sell, meaning South African hospitality businesses without verified sustainability credentials risk losing access to one of their most valuable source markets.

Among FEDHASA’s membership, operators are already demonstrating what is possible when sustainability is treated as an operational commitment rather than a communications exercise. Caron van Rooyen, General Manager of Hotel Verde, Africa’s first hotel to achieve Net Zero Waste certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa, speaks directly to the commercial case:

“There is a persistent assumption that sustainable food costs more and squeezes margins. Our experience tells a different story. Sustainability forces operational discipline. When done properly, it results in a more efficient kitchen rather than a more expensive one.”

Van Rooyen’s broader call to the industry is equally direct: “The industry needs to move from viewing sustainability as a marketing initiative to treating it as an operational standard. The operators who succeed will be those who integrate sustainability into the core of their business model rather than treating it as a separate strategy.”

It is a shift FEDHASA is committed to supporting across its full membership through advocacy, knowledge sharing, and strategic partnerships – such as with The Good Life Show Africa – that connect operators with everything they need to make sustainable practices measurable, verifiable, and commercially viable.

As the only event of its kind on the continent, The Good Life Show Africa gives hospitality operators direct access to Africa’s most innovative producers – across food and beverage, wellness, eco-luxury personal care, and hotel amenities – through live culinary demonstrations, masterclasses, and a curated marketplace where products can be experienced firsthand.

“The show serves as a vital platform for businesses in the booming sustainability market, connecting them with influential buyers, investors, and conscious consumers,” said Heidi Warricker, Chief Events Officer at Live Events, organiser of the Good Life Show Africa. “Visitors have the opportunity to see first-hand how Africa’s producers are revolutionising the better-living space, and to taste, touch, smell, see, and take home all of this innovation.”

The 2026 edition has significantly expanded its trade infrastructure. Live Events has partnered with Ndarama Works, a Pan-African economic advisory consultancy, to facilitate market entry and export growth through targeted trade matchmaking and a hosted buyer programme drawing participants from across Africa, Europe, the Americas, and beyond. Operators attending the show can register to participate in curated matchmaking, connecting directly with buyers aligned to their product offering.

The exclusive 15% attendance discount for FEDHASA members is available on registration. Full details are available at www.goodlifeshowafrica.com.

ILTM Africa 2026 makes its anticipated return to the Norval Foundation in the Host City of Cape Town from 10–12 April, delivering its largest post-Covid edition to date.

Uniting influential luxury suppliers and travel buyers from around the world, ILTM Africa 2026 presents a carefully curated programme designed to spark valuable business connections within a deeply immersive environment.

“This year, ILTM Africa welcomes international delegates representing 32 countries, reinforcing its role as the leading meeting place for African luxury travel,” says Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director at RX Africa. “We are excited to return to the iconic Norval Foundation, where art, culture and design intersect to create an inspiring backdrop for business-building and igniting long-term partnerships.”

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, James Vos, expresses Cape Town’s pride in hosting ILTM Africa as part of the broader Africa Travel Week programme.

“Events like these showcase the best of our destination, our crafts, cultures, communities and cuisine, the authentic ingredients that make Cape Town such a sought-after place to visit. Tourism is a powerful economic driver for our city, with nearly 7% of our workforce employed in the visitor economy, which is why we continue working to connect Cape Town to more source markets and ensure the benefits of tourism are felt throughout our local economy.”

A sensory journey

De Jager emphasises that African storytelling and experiential travel remain central to the three-day programme, with ILTM Africa 2026 showcasing immersive, sensory-led experiences reflecting the evolving expectations of today’s luxury traveller.

“The overall journey for buyers will be seamless and considered, with an initial welcome and transfer to the venue by Jeep Tours and Cape Sidecar Adventures. Upon arrival, the Isibane se Afrika Choir will deliver a musical welcome, capturing the spirit and warmth of the continent,” she adds.

Cape Island will introduce a bespoke ILTM Africa scent, demonstrating the role of scent marketing in strengthening brand recognition and traveller memory. The fragrance will be presented to attendees and incorporated throughout the venue, reinforcing ILTM Africa’s focus on multi-sensory engagement within a luxury business environment.

Wine tourism also takes focus, reflecting growing global interest in immersive, place-based travel experiences. This theme will be explored through a dedicated wine tourism conversation led by The Wine Tourism Conference (WTC), followed by a curated lunch and private wine cellar experience at one of South Africa’s most established wine estates: Klein Constantia Wine Estate.

Conscious luxury

Sustainability is thoughtfully integrated throughout the ILTM Africa experience, with a standout feature being the interactive tactile ‘poke art’ installation by Painted Wolf Wines. This initiative invites attendees to collectively contribute to African wild dog conservation initiatives, further demonstrating how individual contributions come together to create lasting impact.

The Africa Luxury Network Chamber of Commerce and Industries will present a number of distinctive African luxury offerings, including Wazawazi, a sustainable luxury leather brand reflecting African craftsmanship. Additional African-led innovations on display include unique beverages from Kalahari Truffles, plant-based leather alternatives by Holy Kow, and recycled, handmade buyer gifts by The Wren Design.

As host destination partner, Cape Town Tourism will showcase the city’s luxury appeal, reinforcing the region’s status as a world-class events and tourism hub. Vos notes that he and his team will introduce Cape Town’s new Tourism Framework alongside key elements of the This is Cape Town campaign.

“This campaign, implemented by the City’s Tourism and Place Marketing Branch, positions our city across six continents and in 55 cities through targeted campaigns, airline partnerships and city-to-city collaborations. This work is about expanding the tourism value chain and ensuring the entire ecosystem works well, attracting more visitors, encouraging longer stays and strengthening the economic impact of tourism across our city.”

Digital growth at ILTM Africa 2026

2026 also marks a step forward in digital innovation for ILTM Africa, with the launch of a new event app with enhanced lead-generation functionality, making it easier for delegates to maintain and grow connections beyond the show.

ILTM Africa continues to expand its media engagement, with De Jager confirming plans to launch a new luxury magazine in collaboration with Voyages Afrique, in addition to providing media partners with exclusive opportunities to engage with African products, destinations and stories.

“This year, we’ve amplified our mission of seeking new avenues to grow the industry and connect buyers and suppliers beyond the three days of the show,” she explains.

In the lead-up to the 2026 event, ILTM Africa extends its thanks to key partners helping to bring the show to life, including NVD Property & Project Management, The Diamond Works, Cape Sidecar Adventures, Cape Town Tourism, the City of Cape Town, Klein Constantia Wine Estate, and the Norval Foundation.

Further thanks go to Lift for transporting event speakers and buyers around the country, Paper Aeroplane for exclusively creating the programme guide cover artwork, and Reverie Social Table for hosting an exclusive media event in support of the show. Seamless connectivity throughout ILTM Africa and bolt-on Africa Travel Week shows will be supported by Airalo, enhancing the overall delegate experience.

“With its strongest post-Covid line-up, a renewed focus on wine tourism, and an immersive celebration of African luxury, ILTM Africa 2026 promises to be a defining moment for our industry and how we showcase Africa to the world’s high-end travel community,” she concludes.

In the global rush toward more sustainable business practices, the events industry is increasingly being challenged to look inward: are they still talking ‘goals and aspirations’, or is the sector finally delivering meaningful action?

As climate pressures intensify and global audiences demand more responsible experiences, Africa’s events industry is reshaping what sustainable events can – and should – look like, and for RX Africa, the business behind events like WTM Africa, ILTM Africa, FAME Week Africa, Comic-Con and Decorex, the future of event sustainability is proudly, unashamedly, and unapologetically African.

“As a continent, we have long embraced resourcefulness and resilience,” says Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa. “But now, sustainability for us means so much more – it’s about driving systemic change in the communities we reach. We need to enable regeneration, not just mitigate harm.”

This is sustainability with African context and African purpose at its core – deeply practical, grounded in lived realities, and shaped by long-standing community relationships. And while it aligns with the direction of the global events industry, what is happening in Africa is driven by local voices, creativity, and priorities.

Regenerative Events: More Than Just Green

While carbon-cutting or waste reduction remain core to sustainable event delivery, RX Africa is helping shape a regenerative model – one that uplifts communities and builds lasting economic opportunity.

A good example is WTM Africa’s Responsible Tourism Awards, where each handcrafted trophy tells a story of circularity. Made by children in partnership with Uthando SA and using recycled corks donated by conservation-driven Painted Wolf Wines, the awards themselves acknowledge Africa’s craft heritage, build local skills, and keep money circulating in community economies.

This community-first approach extends across RX Africa’s 15-year partnerships with local NPOs like Oliver’s Village, which supports more than 600 people daily through education, healthcare, and food access initiatives. Partner organisation 18twenty8 offers university scholarships and mentorship to young women in tourism and PR – deliberately seeding leadership in historically underrepresented spaces.

The Business Case for Local Innovation

The Crafters Nexus, hosted within WTM Africa, gives small-scale artisans a platform to connect with the international travel trade. The results are remarkable: one local business signed a lucrative international contract to design custom bag covers. Others made critical industry connections that would otherwise be out of reach in global supply chains dominated by mass manufacturing.

FAME Week Africa – an annual showcase of Africa’s film, television, animation, music, fashion, and entertainment technology industries – demonstrates similar impact. At the event’s African Fashion Forum Theatre, ethical stylist Tracy-Lee Rosslind’s “Overflow” installation spotlighted the 6,000 kilograms of textile waste discarded every 45 minutes in the Western Cape. Now, she’s taking her mission global, hosting the African Fashion and Arts Awards in Abuja and leading sustainability talks with Nigeria’s next-gen designers.

The result is that African design thinking and creativity are being brought directly into business conversations and trade agreements.

Designing Cleaner Footprints, One Show at a Time

RX Africa contributes to parent company RX Global’s wider commitment to reach net zero by 2040. This work is supported by a unified global framework that provides clear guidance, practical tools, and cross-regional collaboration.

“Our global commitment to net zero is only possible because of the collective action of our teams around the world,” says Helen Sheppard,RX Group Sustainability Director. “We’re working closely across regions to provide the training, tools, and support needed to turn our shared sustainability goals into meaningful progress on the ground.”

The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) – one of the few venues in South Africa to formally sign the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge – is also playing a leading role. As an NZCE signatory, CTICC has committed to reducing event-related emissions in line with global best practice, reinforcing RX Africa’s efforts to host cleaner, lower-impact shows. Their commitment also highlights the importance of strong collaboration across the value chain – from venues and suppliers to organisers and local communities – as stakeholders work together to accelerate sustainable event delivery.

Beyond venue partnerships, event organisers are introducing low-waste initiatives too, including digital-only catalogues, seed-paper badge holders, and recycled-plastic lanyards. At Decorex, there’s growing momentum toward modular, re-usable area builds. The aim? To cut down on construction waste and lengthen the life cycle of design infrastructure across multiple shows. Other simple but effective shifts – like reusing event lanyards, fabric-based signage for registration walls, and eliminating plastic bottles – are already in motion across multiple RX events.

Weaving explains that the new “Events Sustainability Scorecard”, launched in November across the RX portfolio, strengthens this approach by helping teams track and report on the sustainability actions expected for every show.

“More than a checklist, the scorecard serves as a practical decision-making tool, opening early conversations with venues, suppliers, and partners across core focus areas: energy, production, food and beverage, logistics, and travel and accommodation,” says Weaving. “It ensures that sustainability is not an afterthought, but a guided, intentional part of how events are planned and delivered.”

Setting the Standard for 2026

For Weaving, real sustainability is broad and inclusive.

“It’s not just energy efficiency. It’s education, representation, economic access. It’s giving people the tools to build something that lasts long after the event ends,” concludes Weaving.

Sustainability in Africa delivers a practical, contextual, and community-driven model that can’t be borrowed from the Global North. The work is far from over, but Africa’s voice is leading the way.

Umhlanga – Tourism and hospitality leaders from across KwaZulu-Natal will gather at The Oyster Box Hotel on 6 November 2025, for the inaugural KZN Tourism and Hospitality Think Tank. Held under the theme “Changing the Narrative Through Collaboration”, the event will bring together people working within the province’s hospitality and tourism ecosystem to explore opportunities, address challenges, and co-create practical solutions for the sector’s growth.

While the event is spearheaded by major industry players such as Red Carnation, Sun International, First Resorts, Beekman Group, ANEW Hotels, African Sky, Champagne Sports Resort, and Dream Hotels & Resorts, participation is open to all who are passionate about rebuilding and promoting tourism in KZN.

The initiative follows the success of the third Hospitality Industry Think Tank in Johannesburg in August 2025, where tourism professionals from across South Africa gathered to share ideas, innovations, and strategies for sustainable growth. In addition to raising R180K for the non-profit organisation Touching Dreams, the Johannesburg session identified several national priorities for collective action.

One of the strongest themes to emerge was the need to position South Africa as more than a “two-pot” destination. Delegates emphasised that tourism growth depends on showcasing the country’s diversity beyond Cape Town and Kruger National Park. KwaZulu-Natal was identified as a natural focus area, with its unique combination of beach, berg, and bush experiences.

“KZN is the full package and the obvious place to focus our efforts for an immediate impact,” says Chris Godenir, Touching Dreams ambassador and creator of the annual Hospitality Industry Think Tank.

“A lot has been done over the past two years to improve tourism in the province, but much of that work has happened in silos and progress has been slow. Our goal is to unite all KZN players so that we can move in the same direction, pool our resources, and maximise our collective impact,” added Godenir.

Held in association with FEDHASA, SATSA, and VOASA, the Think Tank will focus on five core themes:

Collaboration – Aligning public and private sectors for integrated development to strategise the new narrative and rebrand KZN.

Fixing the foundations – Addressing infrastructure challenges and inefficient municipalities.

Reviving state-owned assets – Unlocking the potential of environmental and cultural attractions.

Promoting economic growth – With tourism as a catalyst for job creation, sustainability and social stability.

Promoting heritage and culture – Respectfully navigating governance in the Zulu Kingdom.

Each theme will be explored by a panel of industry experts, with active audience participation encouraged. Discussions will culminate in a summarised action plan outlining tangible outcomes and specific follow-up responsibilities. As a first port of call, the key findings will be presented to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs at the Provincial Tourism Conference, which has been proposed for 7 November 2025. This will ensure that insights and recommendations reach key decision makers immediately.

“The KZN Tourism and Hospitality Think Tank is not meant to be a talkshop—it’s about driving meaningful action and measurable change,” says Roger Macquet, Director, Champagne Sports Resort.

“We urgently need to shift the narrative from one that focuses on KZN’s challenges, to one that highlights its successes and immense potential. The province has everything to offer both local and international travellers, and is a year-round destination. After a few tough years, it’s time to put KZN back on the map.”

Proceeds will once again benefit Touching Dreams, specifically the Think Big Academy in KZN, an initiative dedicated to creating youth employment opportunities within the tourism sector.

The headline sponsor of the event is SATIB Insurance Brokers, who offer specialist insurance cover for the tourism, hospitality, and leisure industries of Africa.

“As a specialist broker focused on understanding the evolving needs of the tourism and hospitality industries, collaboration is at the heart of what we do,” says Kevin Watson, Executive Head, SATIB Insurance Brokers.

“Finding solutions that help reduce risk and strengthen these vital sectors is something we care deeply about. The Think Tank provides an important platform to address some of the province’s most pressing challenges, and we are pleased to be part of this collective effort,” adds Watson.

Johannesburg – South Africa’s tourism and hospitality skills gap has become impossible to ignore, with the crisis now dominating industry conversations from Cape Town conference halls to Johannesburg boardrooms. With youth unemployment at 45.5% (despite over half of South Africans being under 35), the need for practical solutions has never felt more urgent.

While many industry players talk about addressing this gap, RX Africa is moving beyond discussion by launching concrete initiatives aimed at building real pathways into tourism careers for young people.

“NextGen is the future of our industry,” says Carol Weaving, Managing Director RX Africa. “If we want real innovation and a healthy future for tourism in South Africa, we have to actively engage students and young professionals – creating new networks, new opportunities and a younger, more inclusive industry.”

Moving Beyond Tokenism

For RX Africa, engaging the next generation is about building a pipeline of real talent for a sector in urgent need. Instead of handing out student discounts just to boost attendance or running surface-level youth panels at events like WTM Africa, FAME Week Africa or Decorex, RX Africa embeds young people in the heart of the industry conversation.

“The traditional conference model where students passively listen to industry veterans doesn’t create jobs,” says Olivia Gradidge, Marketing Manager RX Africa. “At WTM Africa, we work directly with universities to ensure future industry leaders are designing solutions, not just consuming content.”

That philosophy will be front and centre at WTM Africa 2026, with content co-created with university partners, and reflecting the real challenges, dreams and ideas coming straight from campuses across the country – including panel discussions youth can be part of, hands-on workshops focused on industry-critical skills, and networking events designed to build real connections in the professional world.

Giving Young Talent the Mic

Gone are the days when conferences were just long lectures and rows of chairs. RX Africa is reimagining the format to put young people in the driver’s seat.

In 2023, AI-in-business expert Katie King challenged young delegates to create innovative travel tech solutions and pitch them live at WTM Africa. Judged on site with instant feedback, the experience blurred the line between learning and real business exposure and gave students a serious confidence boost in the process.

Brain Box sessions – interactive spaces where students, professionals and industry leaders talk to each other as equals and create meaningful networking connections – are another key feature.

“We’re not speaking at young attendees,” Weaving explains. “We’re speaking with them, sparking genuine conversation and ideas from all levels of experience.” The goal is to break down barriers between generations and find fresh, practical solutions by listening to the people most affected by the skills gap.

More Than Just Events: Year-Round Upskilling

RX Africa knows real progress doesn’t happen in a single three-day event. That’s why they’ve invested in year-round efforts to grow talent in and beyond the tourism space.

With Soapbox, they offer pre-event online workshops exploring Sustainability and Responsible Tourism, so attendees arrive already informed and ready to engage.

With women-in-tourism collectives, they run tailored upskilling sessions that double as safe spaces for women’s personal and professional growth.

With SAACI, they facilitate curated networking and panel sessions that link emerging talent with industry insiders – creating space for meaningful mentorship.

And through a growing partnership with Cape Town Tourism, they’re designing workshops that directly tackle the barriers young people face when trying to break into tourism careers. These aren’t top-down lectures – they’re co-created with the learners in mind.

RX Africa also shines a light on people already making a difference – people like Luckson Zambuko, founder of the African Youth in Tourism & Hospitality Association – helping to link grassroots efforts to wider regional conversations and opportunities.

“If we want to transform African tourism, we need to treat young people as co-creators, not just participants,” says Zambuko. “It’s not enough for youth to be in the room; they must have a real voice at the table. When industry leaders listen, mentor and empower the next generation, we unlock solutions that speak to the realities and ambitions of Africa’s future.”

Measuring What Really Matters

While some organisers track success by numbers – heads through the door or social media reach – RX Africa is interested in something deeper.

“We work closely with our university partners,” says Weaving. “We follow up with participants to see who found internships, landed jobs or connected with mentors after events. That’s the kind of impact we’re aiming for.”

It’s these stories – and the lives changed as a result – that define success more than any headcount ever could.

NextGen Is Redefining the Rules

Hospitality has struggled with outdated perceptions of limited prospects, low growth and few chances for real impact. That reputation isn’t helping an industry that desperately needs fresh talent. Young people today aren’t just looking for a pay check; they want careers that actually matter. But we’re also not seeing fresh talent on stages talking about tourism and the way forward. When they are the next generation leaders, it’s not just about getting them into hotels, but giving them voice at industry events where we need to start listening to the next generation and providing them space to be heard and lead the way. Connecting established leaders with young leaders and emerging talent is crucial to the success of not only tourism going forward, but to exhibitions such as WTM Africa.

“Our events thrive when they build communities, not just audiences,” says Weaving. “By putting NextGen at the heart of what we do, we’re not only bridging the country’s biggest challenge, we’re uncovering its biggest opportunity.”

As the next generation pushes for work that feels valuable, the real test will be how quickly the rest of the industry adapts. If the energy building across RX Africa’s platforms this year is any indication, the blueprint being created could very well drive transformation far beyond the event floor.

Cape Town – World Travel Market (WTM) Africa has announced the launch of its first-ever China Ready® Workshop in partnership with China Business Intelligence Service Network (CBISN), a must-attend event for tourism stakeholders seeking to position themselves for success in the Chinese outbound market.

The workshop will be held on 15 April 2026 from 8am to 10am, providing attendees with critical insights and practical tools while earning valuable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

China Ready® is the world’s leading Chinese tourism preparation programme. Since 2002, it has been successfully implemented across 54 countries and six continents, helping more than a quarter of global tourism destinations effectively serve Chinese visitors.

“With China’s outbound travel sector projected to reach 200 million travellers annually by 2028, the intensive workshop comes at a crucial time for African tourism stakeholders,” says Reanté Naidoo, Buyer & Digital Director at RX Africa.

“Participants will receive expert guidance on everything from understanding Chinese visitors’ needs and preferences to marketing and promotion, dos and don’ts, the power of social media, preferred digital payments and cultural expectations, enabling them to create more appealing experiences for Chinese visitors,” adds Naidoo.

China Ready® will be rolled out in stages at WTM Africa, starting with the essential Knowledge Module in 2026, offering key insights into the Chinese market – including market demographics, culture and customs, and business protocol. In 2027, the focus will shift to Marketing to China and then Branding and Positioning to China in 2028. This phased approach not only makes the content more digestible but also allows professionals to accumulate CPD credits at a steady pace.

CPD is essential for professionals to stay up-to-date and competitive in their field. Attendees gain valuable credits and insights into the latest industry trends, innovations and consumer behaviour, while building meaningful connections across the global travel and tourism sector.

New format makes Cape Town a central hub for Africa’s luxury travel industry.

Cape Town – ILTM Africa today announced a major expansion for its 2026 event, becoming the first luxury travel marketplace on the continent to serve both inbound and dedicated outbound opportunities focused on the Middle East. The move responds to rapid growth in Africa’s outbound luxury travel spending, which industry data shows is reaching US$1.6 bn by 2026.

The expansion comes as travel agencies across sub-Saharan Africa report a 32% jump in luxury outbound bookings over the past year, with strong demand for Middle Eastern destinations. This growth has created a clear market need that ILTM Africa 2026 will address.

“The African luxury travel market continues to evolve, and our clients’ needs are evolving with it,” said Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director of ILTM Africa. “For 2026, we’re enhancing our event by introducing dedicated outbound opportunities focused exclusively on the Middle East, giving African agencies direct access to a curated selection of luxury products from that region. At the same time, we remain fully committed to delivering unmatched value for our South African and sub-Saharan partners through our established buyer mix. This extension simply adds targeted connections while protecting the ROI and proven benefits that have made ILTM Africa indispensable for both exhibitors and buyers.”

ILTM Africa will return to Cape Town’s Norval Foundation in 2026 as an expanded marketplace bringing together:

African suppliers, showcasing premier continental experiences;

Middle Eastern suppliers, presenting high-end regional offerings;

African buyers, seeking both regional products and exclusive access to new opportunities in the Middle East;

And international buyers, exploring investment prospects within African markets.

This dual focus makes ILTM Africa the only African event connecting luxury suppliers with buyers looking for both inbound and outbound opportunities. Many African buyers now handle both types of travel but previously had to attend multiple events to meet all their suppliers. The new format saves time and money while giving suppliers access to expanded markets.

Under the event’s permanent tagline “Igniting Opportunities Fuels Prosperity,” the 2026 event reflects a clear mission: create real value by connecting people who can grow each other’s businesses, whether that means bringing luxury travellers into Africa or helping Africans discover new destinations abroad.

The event will maintain its successful format of pre-matched one-to-one meetings, focused networking, and practical sessions on market trends, now with expanded scope to serve both markets. The Norval Foundation, known for its art collections and architecture, provides a fitting backdrop for this business-focused event.

For more information visit the ILTM Africa website or to express your interest to exhibit, please register here.

Johannesburg – Gen Z, the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce, often gets a bad rap. They’ve been called everything from ‘work-shy’ to ‘unreliable’ and ‘intolerant of outdated policies’. In reality, they’re shaking things up more than any generation before them: prioritising job satisfaction, fair remuneration, work-life balance, and mental wellbeing.

And their influence is having an impact. You only have to look to the events industry, where traditional event formats are being replaced by immersive, interactive, and purpose-driven experiences that reflect Gen Z’s values and digital-native behaviours.

“Gen Z prioritises authenticity and social responsibility,” says Carol Weaving, Managing Director of RX Africa. “They also believe that conferences and live events are crucial for personal and career development, which means that today’s event organisers are working hard to create spaces that deliver on what both Gen Z and Millennials are looking for: opportunities to collaborate, meet new people, and build relationships.”

For Weaving, this is how Millennials – and more recently, Gen Z – are influencing the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector:

Integrated tech

Gen Z’s comfort with digital tools has made seamless tech integration non-negotiable. Events now routinely incorporate augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and AI-driven personalisation to create layered experiences.

“Obviously we saw both AR and VR in action at Comic Con Cape Town, as attendees used the latest tech to explore virtual worlds, fantasy franchises and gaming platforms,” says Weaving. “But the 13th edition of the Africa Automation and Technology Fair (AATF 2025), which we recently hosted at the Gallagher Exhibition Centre in Johannesburg, also used tech to deliver the kind of dynamic demonstrations that resonate with younger audiences.”

Other techie trends include digital twins for venues, so attendees can familiarise themselves with the venue beforehand; introducing gamification into the event framework (from registration to the expo floor) to increase interest and engagement; using edutainment, including interactive panel sessions and live demos, to deliver engaging content; and wearable tech, including smart badges and bracelets to facilitate data capture.

Personalised, interactive sessions

Importantly, the days of traditional lectures or classroom sessions are over. Yes, you can still expect a keynote address, but there’ s a definite shift towards more interactive and engaging learning experiences such as workshops and breakout sessions, particularly as technology allows for more flexibility in how information is presented and consumed.

“A key focus at WTM Africa – one of Africa’s largest travel and tourism trade shows – is how we package and present information,” explains Weaving. “The CTICC is an incredible venue, and it allows us to host different stages, create different experiences and zones, and host different speakers, including at the incredibly popular ‘Brain Box’ space.

As Weaving explains, the “Brain Box” is a smaller, more personal space, complete with bean bags and sofas, that invites engaging conversations with invited speakers.

“Not only do attendees get to meet the speakers – often the best in business – in a more intimate space, but they get to ask questions and shape the conversation, ensuring they learn, connect, and get the information they came for … which is exactly what young, confident audiences are looking for.”

Meaningful connection

Here Weaving touches on an unexpected truth: that Gen Z, who are never far from their phones, actually crave in-person connection.

“Successful events all have some element of networking, and it’s important to facilitate interactions in a way that’s fun, friendly and unintimidating! At WTM Africa, for example, we created an activation with Visit Stellenbosch and Stellenbosch Wine Routes where we brought all the energy and gees of an iconic Stellenbosch Street Soirée direct to the CTICC! It was the perfect way for delegates to connect in a relaxed, market-style setting,” says Weaving.

For Weaving, it’s about community-driven experiences. “At each of our events, whether it’s Comic Con, WTM Africa, Decorex, or 100% Design Africa, we are bringing together a passionate tribe of people who want to feel part of something. If you can get that right, you’ve succeeded!”

Authenticity

Alongside meaningful connection, Gen Z prioritises transparency and genuine communication. Their TikToks are more ‘real’ and ‘relatable’ than their more polished Millennial counterparts – and they value real and relatable content above all else. It’s an important consideration when designing your event programme, says Weaving.

“A lot of thought goes into WTM Africa’s speaker programme. For example, our sessions on inclusive tourism were led by people with disabilities, both seen and unseen, as well as members of the LGBTQ+ community. They could share their lived experiences and interact with stakeholders, decision makers, and delegates in the most authentic way possible,” explains Weaving.

Sustainable solutions

It’s no surprise that the world’s most eco-conscious generation is also driving more responsible practices in the event industry. But it is a global movement, so much so that Weaving says waste reduction (including the elimination of single-use plastics), recyclable booths, carbon off-setting, and local sourcing (employment, suppliers and catering) are all part and parcel of today’s events. And Gen Z expects nothing less.

Ultimately, Gen Z is a complicated, often contradictory bunch. They value speed and efficiency when accessing and consuming information (this is the ‘instant gratification’ generation after all), so events need to deliver key information in the most immediate, engaging way possible. But they also value authenticate connection – and an opportunity to build their networks and advance their careers.

“Gen Z’s influence can’t be ignored,” says Weaving. “But event planners who embrace interactivity, hyper-personalisation, and ethical frameworks will thrive in this new landscape, and have a lot of fun while they’re at it!”
