CAPE TOWN, 31 January 2024 – The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA) is calling for the industry to nominate individuals who are deserving of an award at the inaugural FEDHASA Hospitality Awards.

Taking place on 12 April 2024 at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, the awards recognise outstanding contributions to the industry across several categories, including leadership, operations, sustainability, customer service and culinary excellence.

With the deadline for entries and nominations approaching next month, FEDHASA is encouraging members to put forward the names of their shining stars, colleagues and managers or to throw their own hat into the ring.

FEDHASA National Chairperson Rosemary Anderson explains that they purposely created broad categories and included all areas of expertise and skill levels from general managers, hospitality tech support and housekeeping staff to young professionals. “We are particularly interested in innovation – the individuals pushing boundaries,” she says. “With our dedicated, user-friendly website, it’s now even easier to enter the awards or put forward nominees, and I encourage everyone to visit the site and cast their vote.”

FEDHASA has also made exclusive headline sponsorship available and created various sponsorship packages, offering hospitality businesses valuable nationwide brand visibility. Included are opportunities to participate on the judging panel or to sponsor award categories. “More than this, businesses will be partnering with us to promote excellence in the industry,” says Anderson.

The Hospitality Awards will culminate in a prestigious gala dinner where the winners will be announced. “We are looking forward to hosting this spectacular event honouring our sector’s most deserving individuals and businesses and the strides they are making in raising the hospitality benchmark,” Anderson concludes.

Nominations and entries for the FEDHASA Hospitality Awards will close on 29 February 2024.

CAPE TOWN, 4 AUGUST 2023 – FEDHASA, the voice of hospitality in South Africa, strongly condemns the violence and intimidation caused by this week’s taxi strike in and around Cape Town.

While the organisation supports the right to peaceful protest, it is deeply concerned about the significant disturbance the strike has caused for guests and staff, creating logistical challenges for employees working long hours and late shifts.

“As an industry, hospitality is not unfamiliar with adversity. We grapple with various challenges that hamper our operations daily, including load shedding and water supply issues. Yet the doors remain open,” says Lee-Anne Singer, FEDHASA Cape Chair.

More concerning, she says, is the impact on the reputation of the destination. This as tourism is a key employer of Cape Town residents and a driver in the city’s economy.

“Not only does the violence that has emerged from this taxi strike hamper our staff’s ability to get to their place of work, it also damages the reputation of the destination. Tourism, underpinned by the hospitality sector, is a vital contributor to job creation and economic growth in South Africa and it is imperative that we acknowledge the potential impact of such strikes on our ability to continue to drive this growth and development,” Singer adds.

Despite the disruption, the hospitality sector in Cape Town is determined to ensure that it remains business as usual for staff and guests, despite the external pressures.

“In our efforts to maintain the highest level of service, we are actively working to mitigate any disruption to our guests and prevent any potential damage to the reputation of Cape Town as a world-leading destination,” Singer concludes.

JOHANNESBURG: 25 July 2023 – The travel, tourism and hospitality industry on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is reeling from an ongoing water crisis as municipal authorities struggle to provide a reliable water supply. The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA), the voice of hospitality in the country, is raising the alarm about how this dire situation severely impacts tourism in the region. The consequences are devastating, with a staggering number of days without water and businesses forced to truck in water at astronomical costs.

“The tourism industry, a vital economic driver for the region, is in peril, and the future looks bleak without swift intervention. FEDHASA is standing firm, urging the government to prioritise the restoration of a stable and reliable water supply for the South Coast, safeguarding the livelihoods of residents and ensuring the region’s allure as a thriving tourism destination,” says Rosemary Anderson, National Chairperson FEDHASA.

According to residents’ reports, the South Coast has experienced shocking water shortages over the last 18 months, with only 107 out of 255 days having access to water (between 10 December 2021 and 22 August 2022). The effects on the local hospitality industry have been nothing short of disastrous, with establishments struggling to survive and tourists shying away from visiting the area.

A poignant example comes from a FEDHASA member based in Umzumbe, who disclosed that their single hotel spent a staggering R2,000,000 in the last financial year alone, trucking in water due to the municipality’s inability to provide consistent water supply. Several other B&Bs and holiday cottages face a similar plight, with cancelled bookings becoming the norm and property owners now desperate to offload their assets.

The economic repercussions of this water crisis are felt far and wide. With tourists hesitant to visit the region due to the uncertainty surrounding water availability, businesses are haemorrhaging revenue, leading to mass layoffs and local shops struggling to survive without an influx of visitors. Adding insult to injury, private water tanker operators are capitalising on the situation, charging exorbitant prices and further crippling already beleaguered businesses.

FEDHASA is adamant that the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) must step in when municipalities fail to provide adequate water services. However, despite the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) expressing deep concern over the crisis back in September 2022, the situation remains unresolved, leaving local communities pleading for assistance.

The SAHRC’s public hearings revealed that the water crisis on the South Coast is a result of aging infrastructure, corruption, and a lack of maintenance.

“FEDHASA echoes the call for the DWS to urgently intervene and take decisive action to address the escalating crisis, which has far-reaching consequences for residents and businesses alike,” concludes Anderson.

FEDHASA East Coast, in partnership with Nedbank, unveils its third event that focuses on finding solutions to help the hospitality industry overcome the challenges caused by the energy crisis.

DURBAN, 12 July 2023 – Building on the success of FEDHASA’s ‘Talking Energy with FEDHASA’ events in Cape Town and Johannesburg earlier this year, the third event in the series is set to take place on July 19, 2023, in Umhlanga Rocks. The flooding and energy challenges have had a significant impact on FEDHASA members in KwaZulu-Natal, underscoring the critical importance of this session in identifying sustainable solutions for their businesses.

In partnership with Nedbank, the event unites the hospitality industry, energy specialists, alternative energy providers, and funding experts to address the pressing challenge of the intensifying energy crisis in South Africa. The primary focus is to explore viable solutions that ensure business survival in this challenging energy landscape and safeguard them for the future.

“The third ‘Talking Energy with FEDHASA’ event promises to be an empowering and inspiring day featuring panel discussions and sessions that will explore the future of the hospitality industry and provide practical advice and information on energy alternatives,” says Brett Tungay, FEDHASA East Coast Chairperson.

Attendees will hear from energy providers leading the charge against the energy crisis, including Nedbank economist, Liandra da Silva. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to engage with alternative energy providers and explore a wide range of options, all in interactive formats. Sustainable energy experts attending include Roger Hislop, Executive at Smart Energy, CBI Electric; Marshall Fourie, Utility Management Specialist at Energy Resource Optimizers and representatives from NuHome Africa and Hohm Energy.

Says Tungay: “Our primary objective for organising this third event is to tackle the energy crisis in the hospitality sector head-on by highlighting solutions. As the industry continues to recover while continuing to face the devastating effects of the energy crisis and flooding, it is crucial for us to play a key role in driving transformative changes and presenting viable solutions for hospitality businesses in KwaZulu-Natal. Our event aims to inspire and lead the way in building a stronger and more sustainable future for the industry.”

‘Talking Energy with FEDHASA’ will be hosted at Nedbank Park Square located at 9 Park Avenue, Umhlanga Rocks, on 19 July 2023 at 10:00.

JOHANNESBURG, 21 June 2023 – Following FEDHASA’s successful first event in the series: ‘Talking Energy with FEDHASA’, held in Cape Town earlier this year, the second event in the series will be taking place in Johannesburg on 26 June 2023.

In partnership with Nedbank, the event brings together the hospitality sector, energy experts and alternative energy providers along with funding experts to discuss solutions to business survival in light of the escalating energy crisis in South Africa.

While the first event unpacked the issues with which the hospitality industry is struggling, the second will focus on solutions and what businesses can do to mitigate the impact of loadshedding and safeguard their futures.

Panels and sessions throughout the day will examine the long-term outlook for the hospitality industry: energy experts will offer advice and information about energy alternatives and how businesses can tackle loadshedding, while funding experts will discuss available financing options.

Attendees will also hear from energy providers spearheading an answer to the energy crisis, Nedbank economist, Liandra da Silva, and Craig Sauls, programme manager at the Industrial Development Corporation, who will speak about the Green Tourism Incentive Programme.

An additional element on the sidelines of the event, will be the opportunity to engage with alternative energy providers and be introduced to various options in an interactive format.

Says FEDHASA National Chairperson Rosemary Anderson: “Our intention with this second event is to address the energy crisis from a solutions perspective by showcasing what is possible and viable for hospitality businesses to remain afloat. With the industry still in recovery phase and the energy crisis severely impacting our ability to build back stronger, the event comes at a time when we need to be instrumental in instigating changes and solutions.”

‘Talking Energy with FEDHASA’ will be hosted at Nedbank’s head office located at 135 Rivonia Road, Sandton, Johannesburg, on 26 June 2023. For more information about the event, please contact: kim@bigambitions.co.za

DURBAN, 09 MAY 2023 – FEDHASA, the voice of hospitality in South Africa, launches its non-profit business incubator programme today at the Africa Travel Indaba.

The programme, modelled on several successful initiatives underway within the tourism sector, will specifically cater to the value chain of the South African hospitality sector, seeking to drive sustainable economic growth and job creation amidst the nation’s high unemployment rate.

Further aimed at fostering innovation, supporting entrepreneurs and bolstering the hospitality sector’s B-BBEE transformation agenda, the FEDHASA business incubator is timely as the industry emerges from the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.

By offering Enterprise and Supplier Development services to FEDHASA members, the programme will also strengthen the sector’s collective transformation efforts in a streamlined, ISO 9001:2015-accredited manner and be fully tax-deductible for members.

“We believe that the hospitality industry has immense potential to contribute to South Africa’s economic growth and job creation, particularly in light of the current unemployment crisis,” says Rosemary Anderson, National Chair of FEDHASA. “Our incubator programme will help empower entrepreneurs and support businesses throughout the value chain, thereby fostering the growth and resilience of the South African hospitality sector.”

The innovative incubator model, driven by enterprise development and impact specialists Sigma International and Natalia Rosa, CEO of Big Ambitions, in partnership with FEDHASA, will allow members to redirect a preferred percentage of their Enterprise Development (ED) or Supplier Development (SD) investment spend, enabling a higher impact on the industry and broadening transformation buy-in and reach.

FEDHASA members would sponsor a set number of beneficiaries per financial year and provide tailored, needs-based programmes for each beneficiary and their businesses. This initiative will support the development of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) that are at least 51% black-owned, thus advancing transformation in the hospitality sector.

Anderson confirms that the incubator will be industry-led, allowing member staff to participate in the beneficiary selection process and transformation journey guided by their employers (should they choose). FEDHASA will also be able to nominate beneficiaries on a business’ behalf, considering the intentions of their transformation spend.

FEDHASA is partnering with Sigma International, an award-winning, level 1 B-BBEE company with a proven track record in establishing successful business incubators across various sectors, including tourism, mining, forestry and paper. All of the Sigma International incubators are ISO 9001:2015 accredited.

“Our collaboration with FEDHASA will build on the success of our existing business incubators, which have already impacted in excess of 300 beneficiaries across the entire tourism value chain nationwide,” says Akash Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Sigma International. “We are excited to expand our reach within the hospitality sector and look forward to seeing these make a difference within the sector in the years to come. What makes the timing of Fedhasa incubator special and impactful, is that we able to extend linkages to beneficiaries and funders, across the 5 other tourism incubators we currently have in operations”?

Hospitality providers and FEDHASA members who are interested in participating should contact Akash Singh +27 83 638 0339 akash@sigmaintl.co.za or Lee-Anne Singer +27 83 680 5759 lee-anne@singergroup.co.za on for details.

JOHANNESBURG, 5 DECEMBER 2022 – FEDHASA and MultiChoice SA have partnered to offer the beleaguered hospitality sector, which was greatly disadvantaged during the pandemic, affordable video entertainment for their guests.

The deal sees paid-up FEDHASA members benefiting from DStv Business subscription discounts depending on the type and number of active subscriptions in their account and the contract term they sign up for 12- to 24 months. The subscription-only bundle is for the DStv Business segment and targets selected businesses.

Says Rosemary Anderson, FEDHASA National Chair: “FEDHASA is delighted to have partnered with MultiChoice SA to deliver this important cost-saving benefit to our members. The hospitality sector was one of the most affected by Covid regulations and we are still clawing back our recovery as we begin our first peak summer season since the pandemic began.”

The special DStv Business subscription contract for FEDHASA members is an extension of their support for the hospitality sector, says Anderson.

“MultiChoice SA is pleased to have joined forces with FEDHASA to support the hospitality industry, considering the severe impact to these businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. As DStv Business we pride ourselves on putting our customers first and this initiative allows us to play a part in revival of the industry.” said Rochelle Knock; Executive Head of Product and Base Management at MultiChoice South Africa

“Annual savings of R 20,520.00 can be expected on the 12-month Stay Basic plan option for FEDHASA members signing up with a 100-bedroom hotel. Savings like that offered by Multichoice SA ensure our sector is empowered to deliver on our hospitality promise to guests, but also help with a swifter recovery by saving us fixed costs.

“The cost of providing guest entertainment is significant so these savings really do go a long way to helping our business get back on their feet and form a key part of our FEDHASA 2.0 strategy around coaching, collaboration and commercialisation,” Anderson adds.

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY FEDHASA

FEDHASA WELCOMES DEPT OF HOME AFFAIRS SIX-MONTH EXTENSION OF ZEP PERMITS

JOHANNESBURG, 3 SEPTEMBER 2022 – FEDHASA has welcomed the announcement by Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi extending the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) for a further six months to 30 June 2023.

The South African Government had decided not to renew the permits when they expired in December 2021 but, initially agreed to an extension of December 2022 to grant ZEP holders a chance to apply for alternative visas.

FEDHASA empathises greatly with the serious impact the cancellation of the permits may have had on some businesses; particularly the logistical considerations and humanitarian implications for staff members who have been an integral part of the team for many years.

Says Rosemary Anderson, FEDHASA National Chair: “Thousands of legal Zimbabwean Permit Holders have been living and working in South Africa for many years. Many now have South African children and families.

“Requiring of ZEPs to leave South Africa would not only have negative consequences for the hospitality and tourism industry, but would cause trauma and pain to people whose only sin was to legally look for a better life for themselves and their families,” says Anderson.

South Africa’s unemployment problem will not be resolved by forcibly removing a few hundred thousand Zimbabwean legal permit holders who had built their lives in this country. Rather, South Africa should set its sights on expanding its economy and creating more jobs for the millions of South Africans that are unemployed, which the tourism and hospitality industry could play a key role in if there was a concerted government effort to prioritise removing the red tape that hamstrings the industry.

“For tourism and hospitality to deliver on its economic promise, we require an approach where all Government departments, business, and labour join forces to remove unnecessary red tape, provide a tourism-friendly environment and elevate our destination status to the level it should be. Inbound International tourism and hospitality could be the key to making a massive dent in our unemployment problems in SA.

“We could create significant numbers of jobs in hospitality and tourism in areas where other industries do not operate if we simply committed to collaborating meaningfully to facilitate the changes that are needed for tourism to flourish,” Anderson concluded.
