A Walk-Through History

For an island so small and remote, St Helena has played host to a remarkably large number of influential figures throughout its history. Some visitors are remembered for their positive contributions to the world, while others are perhaps more infamous than famous.

As part of the UK Government funded Tourism Development Programme, an interpretative art installation titled A Walk Through History has been installed to showcase some of the island’s notable visitors. The installation features an initial 28 plaques commemorating internationally significant figures who have visited St Helena since its discovery.

Set along one of Jamestown’s most historic areas, the walk presents St Helena’s rich and varied past in chronological order, allowing visitors to experience its story as they move through the space.

To complement the plaques, and to encourage a relaxing feel, the area has been beautified with trellised seating and planters.

Location and Site Description

The Castle Terrace wall in Jamestown has been identified as the ideal setting for the installation. This important heritage structure has been underutilised in recent years and, at times, affected by antisocial behaviour, particularly at night.

By introducing a prominent visitor attraction, the project aims to increase positive foot traffic and encourage greater use of the area. Enhanced lighting will further improve safety and security.

The Walk also strengthens links between key nearby attractions, improving access from the Wharf to Castle Gardens and surrounding businesses. The site is sheltered from extreme weather, pedestrian-friendly, and restricted to emergency and maintenance vehicles only.

Importantly, there are no entrance barriers, allowing both residents and visitors to enjoy the installation at any time.

The Dolphin Stone

Beautification efforts extend beyond the Terrace. Near the Castle arch lies the Dolphin Stone Garden, a small but historically significant space that is often over-looked.

Recent improvements have gently enhanced the garden, drawing attention to the remarkable story of the Dolphin Stone itself. At the centre is a stone inscribed in 1645 by the crew of the British ship Dolphin during their voyage to Europe. At that time, St Helena served as a mid-Atlantic crossroads for ships of all nations.

Long before the first official Post Office in 1815, this stone acted as a simple but effective postal exchange. Sailors would leave letters beneath it or at the island chapel, trusting that other vessels would collect and deliver them to their final destination.

To further highlight this unique feature, a discreet spotlight will be installed, allowing the historic inscription to be clearly seen and appreciate after dark.

While the garden is small, it is a meaningful place of connection that represents the island’s global maritime past. It enhancement reflects the importance of preserving St Helena’s heritage, ensuring that these stories are not lost over time. By continuing to care for and thoughtfully develop such sites, renewed awareness and appreciation of the island’s history can be fostered.

Repainting of the Church Lane Arch

The repainting of the Church Lane Arch forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the visual character of Jamestown while celebrating its historic layout. Leading into Church Lane, a traditional rear access route behind St James’ Church, the arch marks an area that once played an important role in the town’s day-to-day life. Enhancements like this help present Jamestown as a place that values both its heritage and its appearance, creating a more inviting and visually appealing environment.

St Helena Tourism is confident that the community will take pride in and help protect these shared spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Mauritius has topped Flight Centre South Africa’s list of favourite international destinations for well over a decade. It promises, by almost any measure, a near-perfect holiday, delivering reliable sunshine, extraordinary beaches, seamless accessibility, and a hospitality culture that has been refined specifically for the South African traveller.

“Just over 23,000 South Africans travelled to Mauritius in the first quarter of 2026 alone – an increase on 2025’s Q1 arrivals – making SA the island nation’s fifth largest source market, right behind France, Germany, Reunion Island, and the UK. Mauritius’s status as our country’s leading cruise destination also continues to grow,” says Antoinette Turner, General Manager of Flight Centre South Africa.

“SAA’s recently launched direct Cape Town–Mauritius service, operating three times weekly year-round, combined with Air Mauritius’s equally frequent direct flights, has made the island more accessible from the Western Cape than ever. Johannesburg travellers, meanwhile, also continue to enjoy a wealth of direct flight options from both carriers,” she adds.

Turner believes that Mauritius will always be South Africa’s most-booked international destination, but she reports that Flight Centre is beginning to see an appetite among well-travelled Saffas for something that pushes their boundaries a little further. “They’re looking for something more unexpected,” she explains.

The good news is that the islands surrounding Mauritius offer some of the most compelling travel experiences in the world. Here are a few to consider, hand-picked by Flight Centre’s Travel Experts.

Réunion: For the traveller who wants their island wild

Just 200 kilometres southwest of Mauritius, Réunion is French territory, which means European infrastructure, exceptional cuisine, and a standard of hiking trail maintenance that would make most destinations envious. But what makes Réunion genuinely unmissable right now is Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active shield volcanoes, which is currently in the midst of a spectacular eruptive cycle.

“2026 began with a smaller eruption in January, followed by a highly significant sustained eruption on February 13th, generating massive basaltic lava flows down the volcano’s south-southeast flank. By mid-March, those flows had travelled approximately seven kilometres, cutting across the island’s coastal highway and pouring into the Indian Ocean for the first time in nearly two decades,” Turner explains.

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes on earth, and because the underground system is still showing seismic activity, scientists expect new eruptive phases to happen before the year ends.

To stand at a safe viewing distance and watch molten rock meet the sea is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles available to travellers anywhere on the planet right now. Add to this Réunion’s three UNESCO-listed calderas (covering over 40% of the island), its network of world-class hiking trails, and its Creole culinary culture, and the picture that emerges is of an island that delivers something Mauritius, for all its considerable charms, was never designed to offer.

South African arrivals to Réunion have grown between 10 – 13% annually, with over 5,000 South African tourists visiting last year. So, word is getting out.

Seychelles: For the traveller who wants to island-hop in style

If Mauritius is the reliable favourite, Seychelles is its more enigmatic, architecturally dramatic cousin. An archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the western Indian Ocean, it promises the pleasure of moving between entirely distinct worlds, each with its own its own beaches and its own pace.

2026 is a particularly meaningful year to visit, according to Turner. “The Seychelles celebrates its Golden Jubilee in June – 50 years of independence from the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the archipelago has entered the year with a significant accolade: the US News & World Report has named it the world’s number one destination for eco-tourism in its 2026 Best Countries rankings,” she says.

According to Christine Vel, Tourism Seychelles’ Market Manager for South Africa:

“The Seychelles has always delivered a wilderness experience wrapped in world-class luxury. Our Golden Jubilee year feels like a natural moment for the world to rediscover what makes these islands so extraordinary. The eco-tourism recognition reflects something our islands have always embodied: that the most memorable travel experiences are the ones where the natural environment is the centrepiece. For South African travellers looking to experience island-hopping at its finest, there has never been a better time to explore the archipelago.”

Zanzibar and Tanzania: For the traveller who wants beach and wilderness in a single trip

Zanzibar recorded 100,739 international tourist arrivals in December 2025 alone – a 10% increase on the previous year. These numbers reflect a destination that has matured into one of Africa’s most compelling propositions: a spice-scented, historically layered island with turquoise water and white sand, currently more accessible from South Africa than it has ever been.

“Airlink’s newly launched twice-weekly direct service from Johannesburg to Zanzibar, operated on its flagship Embraer E195-E2 jets with complimentary meals, a generous baggage allowance, and no middle seats, removes the last remaining friction from the journey. A Cape Town to Zanzibar route follows in October, opening the island to the Western Cape market without a Johannesburg connection,” comments Turner.

What elevates Zanzibar beyond a beautiful beach destination, however, is what lies on the mainland. A Zanzibar beach stay combined with a Tanzania safari (the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or the Selous) creates a two-part itinerary that delivers the full spectrum of what travel can offer.

Your next favourite destination is probably one you haven’t considered yet

Mauritius will always deserve its place at the top of the list, but the most interesting thing about South African travellers right now is that they’re asking more questions – not just “where can I go?” but “what do I actually want from this trip?” That shift in thinking opens up an ocean of possibility.

“Once a traveller starts thinking in terms of experiences rather than destinations, the whole map changes,” says Turner. “Réunion, the Seychelles, Zanzibar – these aren’t consolation prizes for when Mauritius is fully booked. They’re world-class destinations in their own right, each delivering something very different. The Indian Ocean rewards the curious. It always has,” she concludes.

There’s cautious but genuine optimism in the air. Oil prices have fallen nearly 20% through May as ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran show tentative signs of progress, and the outlook for international travel is starting to shift. That’s great news for South Africans with long-haul trips currently marinading on a wish list.

But here’s what the improving global picture hasn’t changed: Africa in July is exceptional. And South Africans who turn their attention to exploring the broader continent this winter will find themselves richly rewarded.

“The irony is that while everyone was watching Europe and waiting for the world to settle down, Africa was delivering some of the most extraordinary travel experiences on the planet,” says Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa. “June–August is genuinely one of the best months to be on this continent. The wildlife viewing is at its peak, the skies are clear, and there are plenty of opportunities to create those cosy forever-memories with those you love most. Our Travel Experts have been saying this for years. The data is finally catching up.”

Regional African travel surged in 2025 and is a confirmed growth trend for 2026, according to Flight Centre’s Year in Travel 2025 report. Two thirds of South Africans travelled specifically for nature last year, 65% travelled to recharge and escape burnout, and 83% say travel is essential for their mental health. Africa, it turns out, is not a compromise destination. For an overwhelming majority of South Africans, it is precisely the kind of travel that matters most.

Where to go – and why winter is the perfect moment

Kafue National Park, Zambia

Kafue is Africa’s second-largest national park (roughly the size of Wales) and, remarkably, one of its least visited. In winter, the Busanga Plains in Kafue’s remote north flood with game, including lion prides, massive eland herds, and the elusive sitatunga.

“Kafue is the destination I find myself recommending more and more to travellers who’ve done the Kruger and who are ready for something that feels truly undiscovered,” comments Turner. “Clients who go invariably say it’s the trip that changed their benchmark for what a safari can be.”

One of the most compelling reasons to base a winter itinerary around Kafue is what becomes possible immediately afterwards. Proflight Zambia currently operates direct flights from both Lusaka and Livingstone to Maun (the primary gateway to Botswana’s Okavango Delta), running on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays through to the end of October, covering the entirety of peak season. In practical terms, that means a seamless two-country wilderness itinerary is not only possible; it’s straightforward.

Josias Walubita, Director of Flight Operations at Proflight Zambia, explains:

“The Lusaka–Maun and Livingstone–Maun routes open up an incredible opportunity for travellers who want to experience the very best of southern and central Africa in a single trip. Zambia and Botswana together offer a wilderness combination that is genuinely world-class, and having a reliable, scheduled connection between the two means travellers no longer have to choose between them. We’re proud to be making that journey easier during what is arguably the finest wildlife season on the continent.”

The Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Delta is at its annual flood peak in winter, transformed by waters that have travelled thousands of kilometres from the Angolan highlands to fan out across the Kalahari in one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles. Islands emerge, channels multiply, wildlife concentrates on elevated ground, and the game viewing becomes almost implausibly good. A mokoro gliding silently through papyrus-lined waterways at dawn is one of the great travel experiences available anywhere on earth right now.

“There’s something about being that immersed in a functioning wilderness, with no signal and no schedule, that does what no European city break can. We’re seeing strong demand for Delta camps this winter, and for good reason,” Turner says.

Walvis Bay, Namibia

Namibia’s desert-meets-ocean landscape is one of the most visually arresting on the continent, and Walvis Bay places you at the heart of it without the crowds that increasingly follow Swakopmund’s rising profile. The lagoon here is one of Africa’s most important wetland sites, home to vast flocks of flamingos that turn the shallows pink at dusk. Dune 7, among the highest sand dunes in Namibia, looms just outside town, and the seal colony at Cape Cross is close enough for a day trip. This is a destination that rewards the traveller who prefers to discover rather than follow.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Zanzibar has long deserved a direct connection from South Africa, and Airlink has just delivered one – a twice-weekly year-round service from Johannesburg that removes the layover and the guesswork from what was previously a more complicated journey. The island needs little introduction: turquoise waters, powder-white beaches, Stone Town’s labyrinthine spice-scented streets. With frequency increasing to three weekly flights over the peak December period and a Cape Town route launching in October, access to Zanzibar from South Africa has never been simpler.

The global travel conversation is slowly returning to normal. Long-haul routes are reopening, and the familiar pull of European summers is reasserting itself. All of that is excellent news, but it does raise a question worth pondering: when the rest of the world was grounded, distracted, and recalibrating, Africa never stopped being extraordinary.

The travellers who noticed that first are already booked.

(Pictured left to right: Jessica Redinger: General Manager, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank; Charity Mabuza: Rooms Divisions Manager, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank; Cindy-Lee Cloete: WESSA CEO; Karel Mienie: Facilities Manager, Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank)

Johannesburg, South Africa, 27 March 2026: Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank has officially been awarded Green Key certification, an internationally recognised eco-label for tourism establishments committed to responsible and sustainable practices. Managed in South Africa by WESSA (The Wildlife & Environment Society of South Africa), the programme includes independent audits and annual verification, ensuring that certification reflects sustained performance rather than a once-off achievement.

Speaking at the official handover, WESSA CEO Cindy-Lee Cloete emphasised that Green Key certification represents more than compliance: “Green Key certification reflects a real commitment to sustainability, responsible tourism, and continuously improving how we operate as a hospitality establishment. This achievement is not just about receiving a certificate – it is about recognising the journey, the effort, and the people behind it.”

Sustainability engineered into the building

At the core of Hyde Rosebank’s sustainability journey is a design-led approach, where environmental performance is embedded into the building itself – not retrofitted.

The property operates with solar panels, a gas generator system, heat recovery for hot water, and a borehole supplying approximately 40% of its water needs, significantly reducing reliance on municipal infrastructure.

These systems are complemented by energy-efficient LED lighting, an Energy Performance Certificate, and water-saving aerators across guest rooms and operational areas, ensuring resource efficiency is maintained across all touchpoints.

“These aren’t cosmetic changes; they’re engineered into how the building runs every day. Sustainability is part of the infrastructure, and it shapes how we operate across every level of the hotel,” explains Jessica Redinger, General Manager of Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank.

Operational change embedded into systems

Beyond infrastructure, the hotel has embedded sustainability into daily operational practices and team behaviour, a critical factor in achieving Green Key certification.

Housekeeping and maintenance teams actively monitor energy usage, water consumption, and air conditioning systems, with daily checks ensuring unused rooms are not consuming unnecessary resources.

“We’ve already seen measurable reductions in energy and water consumption through daily monitoring and team accountability. It’s about turning awareness into action at every level of the operation,” adds Redinger.

Efforts to reduce waste are equally embedded. The hotel has eliminated single-use plastic water bottles, replacing them with a reusable glass bottle system supported by on-site purification and washing infrastructure, alongside broader waste reduction initiatives.

Embedding sustainability into experience, culture and community

A defining feature of Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank’s approach is the seamless integration of sustainability across guest experience, team culture, and community impact – without compromising comfort or design.

From digital in-room systems and bamboo key cards to reusable glass water bottles and initiatives such as “Skip the Clean”, which reduces water, energy, and chemical use, guests can participate in more responsible practices without disruption.

Beyond the property, Hyde Rosebank maintains a strong focus on local community engagement, with ongoing support for New Jerusalem Children’s Home through food, clothing donations, and regular visits, alongside participation in Rosebank clean-up initiatives and wellness-driven community partnerships.

Internally, this approach is underpinned by a culture-driven model, where sustainability is embedded into daily operations. A cross-departmental ESG committee, supported by leadership and operational teams, ensures accountability through daily briefings, monitoring, and continuous reinforcement.

Redinger shares that, “The highest compliment is that guests often don’t notice because sustainability is built into the experience from the start. Where guests do have a choice, it’s positioned as a benefit, not a sacrifice.”

Green Key certification is recognised in over 90 countries and forms part of a global network of tourism establishments committed to sustainability.

For Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, this milestone marks not an endpoint, but the beginning of a deeper commitment. “Sustainability does not sit in a file or a policy. It lives in daily actions, in how teams use resources, engage with guests, and contribute to a culture of responsibility. It’s about asking what more can be done and how we keep improving, and based on what we’ve seen here, this team is well positioned to lead in this space,” concludes Cloete.

# # #

About Green Key
Coordinated internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Green Key is the leading global eco-certification for the tourism and hospitality industry. The programme recognises establishments that uphold high environmental standards through an independent auditing process and continuous improvement.

About Hyde Hotels, Resorts & Residences

Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) has delivered a confident outlook at its Annual General Meeting (Wednesday, 12 Nov 2025), reporting strong momentum across its global operations as FY26 gets underway. First-quarter results and preliminary October trading data confirm the group’s positive trajectory, with corporate operations particularly robust.

Corporate is strong, with FCM Travel securing a pipeline of account wins totalling almost AUD$400 million, Asia returning to modest profitability, and the business globally delivering further productivity gains. First-quarter total transaction value (TTV) increased by nearly seven per cent.

Leisure TTV is also growing at a healthy rate. Still, the temporary travel pattern shifts that emerged late last year continue to impact year-on-year profit comparisons, which is in line with our expectations. We are, however, starting to see signs of recovery, which is a positive signal ahead of our peak second-half trading periods.

For the full year, FCTG is targeting an underlying profit before tax of AUD$305 million–AUD$340 million, a 5.5%–17.6% uplift on FY25.

Comments by Chris Galanty, Global Corporate CEO, Flight Centre Travel Group:

“Global business travel continues to face challenges, from airline disruptions to geopolitical tensions, including the USA government shutdown. In addition, Africa continues to face persistent inflationary pressures, inconsistent exchange rates, rising visa costs and escalating global uncertainty. It is at times like this that FCTG’s corporate brands FCM Travel and Corporate Traveller demonstrate the vital nature of expert travel management for businesses.

“Having a trusted travel management company spearheaded by people and tech has never been more crucial. Our corporate brands are not just booking services – they’re essential risk management partners always providing real-time support and strategic guidance.

“Our customers have benefited from immediate assistance during disruptions, with dedicated consultants proactively managing itinerary changes and providing duty-of-care services that have proven invaluable.

“Corporate Traveller thrives with its dedicated consultant model, particularly resonating with small and medium enterprises seeking personalised service alongside technological efficiency.

“FCM Travel continues to strengthen its position serving larger organisations with complex travel needs, expanding its client base by securing significant new accounts throughout the year.

“The business is leveraging its proprietary technology suite to deliver customised solutions to sophisticated travel programmes, while making substantial progress with New Distribution Capability implementation.

“We’re at the forefront of implementing artificial intelligence tech that enhances service delivery while improving operational efficiency. AI now intelligently routes inbound requests to the appropriate consultants, improving response times and saving thousands of consultant hours.

“Business travel remains essential to prosperity, even in uncertain times. Our role is to ensure that when our customers’ people need to travel – whether to close deals, grow relationships, or drive innovation – they can with confidence knowing they have expert support at every stage.”

Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa, 11 September 2025 – Morukuru Family has announced the official reopening of Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House at Morukuru Family Madikwe. Both riverfront homesteads reopen with refreshed interiors following a flooding incident in February, and are now welcoming bookings alongside Morukuru Farm House, which remained fully operational throughout.

In February, extraordinary rains caused the Molatedi Dam to overflow, with the Marico River rising dramatically and impacting the interiors of Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House. The Morukuru Family team used the moment to renew these much-loved private houses, partnering with interior designer Amy Kidger of Hinterland Studio to lead a thoughtful redesign.

“In the bush, nature teaches resilience,” says Ed Zeeman, Co-Founder and Co-Owner of Morukuru Family. “What began as a challenging event became an opening to reimagine two soulful homes. We’re delighted to welcome guests back to the properties, familiar in spirit, newly inspired in detail, and as private and flexible as ever under our Morukuru Freedom Concept.”

Taking her cue from the Tamboti trees that shade the houses (‘Morukuru’ is the Tswana name for Tamboti), the surrounding riverine forest, and a curated collection of bold photographic artworks by Leana Clunies-Ross that were deliberately chosen by the owners, Kidger’s design layers refined comfort with a contemporary African sensibility.

“The brief was to create spaces that feel elevated yet effortless – alive with texture, colour, and craft, and always connected to the landscape,” Kidger, Founder of Hinterland Studio, said. “Expect a palette of ochres, rusts, deep greens, and river blues; grasscloths and woven details; patinated metalwork and natural finishes. The result is a calm and characterful backdrop to the theatre of the bush.”

What’s new:

Refreshed interiors at both Morukuru Owner’s House and Morukuru River House

A fitness room available to guests staying at either house

Enhancements to outdoor living spaces to maximise river views and starlit dining

Set on the Marico River, Morukuru Owner’s House is an intimate two-bedroom retreat for up to four guests, while nearby Morukuru River House hosts up to six adults and four children across three en-suite bedrooms. Booked together for larger gatherings, both offer private pools and generous outdoor living. Completing the trio, Morukuru Farm House is a five-bedroom homestead with expansive lawns, ideal for multigenerational stays. All three operate off-grid on solar power and deliver exclusive-use privacy.

Bookings are open for all three Morukuru Family Madikwe properties. Existing rates and promotions apply.

Ends

Reconnecting family, friends, nature, and you, is the promise of Morukuru Family, a renowned award-winning hospitality group and a member of Relais & Châteaux. Morukuru Family’s three exclusive-use houses in Madikwe Game Reserve as well as Morukuru Ocean House in De Hoop Nature Reserve, each offer the ‘Morukuru Freedom Concept’ for guests to create a unique and personalised holiday. Morukuru Beach Lodge in De Hoop Nature Reserve can be booked per suite, or on an exclusive-use basis. AtholPlace Hotel & Villa in Sandton, Johannesburg, consists of a 9-room boutique hotel and a 4-bedroom private villa. Morukuru Family is dedicated to securing a sustainable future for the reserves and protecting our planet and offer specialised travel packages – Safaris with a Purpose and Coastal Conservation with a Purpose.
www.morukuru.com

Morukuru Goodwill Foundation

Morukuru Family’s commitment to conservation, community, and sustainability led to the establishment of Morukuru Goodwill Foundation (MGWF) in 2007 by owners Ed and Anka Zeeman. Working in partnership with the Parks Board and CapeNature, and together with local communities we support nature-based projects, educate, mentor and ultimately empower the conservation of Africa’s wildlife sanctuaries. https://morukuru.com/morukuru-goodwill-foundation/

Launched during South Africa’s Tourism Month, the weekly series amplifies the lived experiences, ideas, and ambitions of the people who shape African tourism from the inside out.

In celebration of South Africa’s Tourism Month, a new podcast is offering something long overdue in the African tourism landscape: a platform for authentic, unfiltered voices from across the value chain to share their stories, insights, and ideas for the future.

I Am Tourism Stories, a new weekly podcast, brings together personal and professional reflections from the people powering Africa’s tourism sector — from community leaders and policy advisors to creatives, conservationists, and entrepreneurs.

The podcast is the latest evolution of the I Am Tourism campaign launched during the COVID-19 crisis, which spotlighted the often invisible contributions of women and youth in the industry. This next chapter extends that mission — moving beyond visibility to engagement, learning, and systems change.

“We’ve always known that the people behind Africa’s travel sector hold the deepest insight into its challenges and possibilities,” says Natalia Rosa, tourism strategist and co-creator of the original campaign. “This platform is a way to listen, learn, and lead differently — together.”

Episodes prioritise candid conversation over commercial promotion, with guests invited to share what’s working, what’s not, and what’s possible.

The Momentum Multiply Titans are breaking new ground this season, embarking on a preseason training camp in St Helena from 23 August to 30 August 2025.

The trip has been made possible through the unwavering support of Airlink, who have fully sponsored the team’s flights. As both a valued Titans partner and the only airline connecting St Helena to the world, Airlink has played a central role in making this remarkable camp a reality.

St Helena, a remote island with deep cricketing roots, offers the perfect blend of isolation and inspiration for a high-performance squad. “St Helena offers an environment that is increasingly rare in professional sport,” said Sebastian Stent, Senior Marketing Manager at the Communications Hub of St Helena Government. “The island’s seclusion allows teams to focus completely on their preparations without distraction, while also enjoying the natural beauty, cultural heritage, and genuine hospitality of our community.”

Momentum Multiply Titans Head Coach, Rivash Gobind, expressed his excitement ahead of the camp: “This preseason trip to St Helena is an incredible opportunity for us as a team. The environment will allow us to focus on our cricket, strengthen our bonds as a squad, and challenge ourselves in new ways. We are extremely grateful to Airlink and all the partners involved for making this unique experience possible.”

The initiative was born out of the strong partnership between Titans Cricket and Airlink, with St Helena’s cricketing history providing a natural link. “Cricket is rumoured to be the first sport played on the island as far back as 1844,” added Stent. “With support from Mantis St Helena and Sure St Helena, the camp quickly became a venture with incredible potential for everyone involved.”

“Airlink has a proud association with the Momentum Multiply Titans franchise. We share the common values of reliability, professionalism and dedication, along with the quest to provide memorable and happy experiences for our growing communities of fans and customers,” said Airlink’s CEO, de Villiers Engelbrecht. “Through this partnership, the Titans’ cricket teams benefit from Airlink’s consistently punctual service, seamless travel coordination, and logistics across our comprehensive route network,” he added.

While the primary focus will be on intense training, the players and staff will also have opportunities to immerse themselves in the island’s unique experiences – from marine safaris and fishing excursions to the famous 699-step Jacob’s Ladder challenge. These activities promise to strengthen team spirit while giving the squad a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

For the Titans, this camp marks an opportunity to prepare for the season in an environment that fosters focus, growth, and cohesion.

For St Helena, hosting the team highlights the island’s ability to welcome high-profile groups while showcasing its extraordinary natural and cultural assets to a global audience.

The Momentum Multiply Titans thank Airlink for their commitment and vision in helping create a preseason unlike any other.

Momentum Multiply Squad traveling to St Helena: Neil Brand, Letsolo Selemela, Jorich Schalkwyk, David De Villiers, Janco Smit, Roelof van der Merwe, Lethabo Phahlamohlaka, Lesego Kokohlabana, Keegan Petersen, Duan Jansen, Sibonelo Makhanya, Keagan Lion-Cachet, Andile Phehlukwayo, Junior Dala, Dayaan Galiem.

A fresh chapter in culinary direction – with women leading the way

5 June 2025, CAPE TOWN: Pullman Cape Town has appointed Melissa Stevens as its new Executive Chef – a move that reinforces the hotel’s growing reputation as one of the city’s most food-forward hospitality brands.

With years of experience in some of South Africa’s most notable kitchens, including at Morgenster Estate, Stevens will step into her new role leading all culinary operations across the Pullman Cape Town property, from curated events to everyday dining experiences.

“My cooking has always been about comfort and connection,” says Stevens. “This role is an opportunity to bring that philosophy into an iconic space, with menus that evolve with seasonality while staying rooted in both simplicity and bold flavour.”

Her arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Pullman Cape Town’s food & beverage identity, which has continued to evolve since its inception in 2023. For example, the hotel recently opened Konnichiwa (a Japanese-style sushi bar already drawing local regulars) and participated in Restaurant Week South Africa.

“Melissa brings a balance of technical talent and warmth, as well as creativity and strong leadership into our kitchen,” says Raynor Damons, Director of Food and Beverage at Pullman Cape Town. “She represents exactly where we’re going: premium hospitality led by real people doing meaningful work – especially women.”

Pullman Cape Town currently employs more women than men across its team – including several heads of department – making it well-positioned to support Accor’s Global commitment to gender equity through initiatives like #SheLeads. The programme celebrates inclusive leadership across Africa and the Middle East by spotlighting diverse voices shaping tomorrow’s hospitality landscape.

“As Cape Town grows its reputation on the global stage, we’re evolving with it – not just through design or service, but through who leads our spaces,” added Damons. “Our vision is rooted in inclusion. We believe diverse teams create richer experiences for everyone who walks through our doors.”

With brand-new menus being rolled out under Stevens’ guidance this season, guests won’t have to wait long to get a taste of what she brings to the table.

From elevated all-day dining at Stratus Room to handcrafted cocktails at Ghibli Bar & Rooftop Terrace and sushi-forward plates at Konnichiwa Lounge, Pullman Cape Town continues to strengthen its position as one of the city’s most dynamic hospitality and culinary destinations. The hotel also offers seven fully flexible meeting and event spaces, making it a preferred choice for those looking to balance business with lifestyle in the heart of Cape Town.

Reservations for Stratus Room can be made via Dineplan. The restaurant is open from 06h30 – 22h00 daily.
