Free to enter, the Awards celebrate the businesses, destinations and individuals driving meaningful change through tourism across Africa. Entries close 31 December 2026.

Entries are now open for the 2027 WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, recognising the businesses and destinations leading the way in sustainable, responsible tourism practices across the continent.

“These awards exist to shine a light on those that don’t simply claim to be sustainable or responsible, but can clearly demonstrate what they’re doing, the impact they’re achieving, and what others can learn from their approach,” said Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director at RX Africa.

The awards land at a pivotal moment for the industry. According to WTM Africa’s 2026 Africa Travel & Tourism: State of the Industry Report, the continent welcomed 81 million international visitors in 2025, an 8% increase and the fastest growth of any region globally. Yet recognition for credible responsible practice remains rare: fewer than 5% of African hospitality properties currently hold third-party sustainability certification.

Part of the ICRT Global Responsible Tourism Awards programme, the 2027 WTM Africa edition brings together an independent judging panel with deep expertise across responsible tourism, conservation, inclusion and destination management. The panel is chaired by Emeritus Professor Harold Goodwin, founder of ICRT Global and Managing Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership.

“Those who are taking responsibility for making tourism more sustainable deserve recognition,” said Goodwin. “Every year in the Awards, we find businesses and destinations that are making tourism better. Use your Award in your PR and marketing. You deserve recognition for your contribution to making great places for people to live, because great places to live are great places to visit.”

Free to enter, nominations are open across six categories:

Nature Benefiting Communities – Impactful, community-centred initiatives that protect nature and biodiversity.

Addressing Climate Change – Substantive action to reduce emissions, build resilience and tackle the impacts of a changing climate.

Access for People with Disabilities – Accessible, inclusive experiences and genuine employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Communicating Responsible Tourism – Authentic, transparent and compelling communication of responsible tourism practices.

Rebalancing Tourism and Addressing Overtourism – Destinations and businesses that work to restore a healthier equilibrium between visitors, residents and the places tourism calls home.

All Inclusive Can Be Responsible – All-inclusive operators and destinations demonstrating positive economic, environmental and community impact.

Entrants are welcome to apply across multiple categories. Application forms are available to download from the WTM Africa website, and completed submissions must be uploaded via the official entry portal by 31 December 2026.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, Alderman James Vos, said: “Cape Town is incredibly proud to be the host city of World Travel Market Africa, one of the signature events on our tourism calendar and an important part of our economic growth mission.

“But for us, growing tourism is also about making sure its benefits reach more people and communities. That is why the Responsible Tourism Awards are so important. They recognise those who are making a real difference and remind us that tourism success should be measured not only by visitor numbers, but also by the positive impact we create for our people and our environment.”

He added: “We look forward to welcoming Africa’s tourism champions to Cape Town in April 2027 and showcasing a destination that is committed to growing tourism responsibly, sustainably and inclusively.”

Finalists and winners will be celebrated at the Responsible Tourism Awards Ceremony on 8 April 2027, held as part of WTM Africa at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), which runs from 7–9 April 2027.

“Don’t miss your chance to be seen,” added De Jager. “Past winners have turned a single accolade into lasting commercial credibility, unlocking access to international buyers, investors, media and the growing number of travellers who make responsible practice a deciding factor in where and how they travel.”

How to Enter

MOU launched at Africa’s Travel Indaba signals a new phase of structured, certification-led support for South African hospitality businesses navigating increased scrutiny.

The Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA) and Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), formalising a strategic partnership aimed at advancing responsible tourism practices across Southern Africa’s hospitality sector.

The agreement was signed on 22 April 2026 and officially launched at Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 by Jaya Naidoo, General Manager FEDHASA KZN & Eastern Cape and FTT General Manager Grace Stead, establishing a framework to promote and advocate for responsible tourism principles and practices among their members and the broader industry. This includes providing educational opportunities (such as webinars, workshops, and digital learning hubs), networking, capacity-building, and market access, as well as collaborating on policy, research, projects, and events that encourage ethical tourism.

The partnership will also help to advance the tourism industry’s operational standards, with partners agreeing to meet quarterly to share relevant information and updates, review progress, and identify new opportunities. This ensures alignment across both organisations and avoids duplication or unnecessary competition.

The timely partnership comes as 45% of international travellers turn to accommodation with certified sustainable credentials, according to Booking.com’s 2024 Sustainable Travel Report. At the same time, the EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (Directive 2024/825), which becomes binding from 27 September 2026, is reshaping the terms on which international markets engage with tourism products. It is evident that, for South African hospitality businesses competing for international visitors, verified sustainability credentials are fast becoming a prerequisite for market access.

“Responsible tourism, once a niche positioning strategy, is now the direction the global market is moving in, and South African hospitality needs to move with it,” said Naidoo. “Our partnership with FTT gives our members a direct connection to one of Africa’s most credible and established responsible tourism certification frameworks. This is FEDHASA in action: removing barriers, opening doors, and ensuring our members have what they need to compete and lead.”

FTT is a leading African responsible tourism certification body, operating across South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania and Uganda. Its certification standard, which is independently reviewed and confirmed as compliant with Travalyst initiative, encompasses fair wages and working conditions, equitable distribution of benefits, ethical business practices, and environmental stewardship.

“South Africa’s tourism recovery is significant – 10.5 million international tourist arrivals in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, as reported by the National Department of Tourism. But recovery alone is not enough. The businesses that will thrive in the next decade are those that can demonstrate, credibly and verifiably, that they are operating in a way that is good for both people and the planet,” noted Stead.

“FEDHASA’s membership represents a notable portion of South Africa’s hospitality industry, and this partnership means we can reach them with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to make that transition at scale,” she explained.

The partnership will be reviewed annually and is in effect for an initial period of 36 months. The signing marks the beginning of a collaboration that both organisations intend to build on progressively, with joint initiatives to be announced in the months ahead.

In a significant milestone for South Africa’s tourism and sustainability agenda, the Tourism & Travel Green Lung. First launched at Vergelegen Wine Estate (February 2026), and now has officially expanded to KwaZulu-Natal, with Brahman Hills announced as the second flagship site.

This expansion, led by Sigma International (www.sigmaintl.co.za ) in collaboration with key industry partners and tourism leaders, signals a bold step forward in embedding environmental responsibility, enterprise development, and inclusive growth into the tourism ecosystem. The activation took place ahead of Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026.

From Concept to Movement: Scaling a National Green Lung

Following the successful launch at Vergelegen Wine Estate, where the initiative positioned itself as a “living showroom where ESD meets ESG” — the Brahman Hills expansion represents the next phase: scaling a replicable, place-based model across South Africa.

What began with the planting of 250 trees linked to SMME carbon reduction is now evolving into a national movement, with each Green Lung acting as:

A carbon-reduction and biodiversity restoration hub

A platform for SMME participation and visibility

A living symbol of tourism’s commitment to regenerative practices

A Legacy Activation for Africa’s Travel Indaba

Timed strategically around Africa’s Travel Indaba, the Brahman Hills Green Lung is positioned as a legacy activation for the continent’s premier tourism gathering. It demonstrates how the sector can move beyond dialogue into visible, measurable action.

This initiative reinforces a powerful message:

The private sector is not waiting. It is leading.

By anchoring the Green Lung within real destinations, the tourism industry is:

Translating ESG commitments into tangible, on-the-ground action

Creating credible, verifiable sustainability narratives aligned with global expectations

Enabling SMMEs to actively participate in climate solutions

Brahman Hills: A Natural Partner in Conservation and Innovation

Set in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Brahman Hills brings deep alignment to the initiative through its longstanding commitment to conservation, biodiversity, and thoughtful land stewardship.

The Green Lung will be integrated into the estate’s broader environmental vision, including its 22-hectare Serenity Garden and landscape restoration programme, positioning the site as both:

A conservation asset

And an immersive, experiential tourism destination rooted in serenity, wellness and excellence

The development also coincides with Brahman Hills’ ambitious plans to establish one of the largest labyrinths in the world, reinforcing its role as an innovative, globally relevant tourism attraction.

Leadership Voices

Akash Singh, CEO of Sigma International:

“What we are seeing today is the transition from a single project into a movement. The Green Lung is no longer just a concept. It is becoming infrastructure for impact.
This is where enterprise development meets environmental responsibility in a way that is visible, credible, and scalable. Through this expansion, we are demonstrating that tourism can lead South Africa’s ESG agenda, with SMMEs at the centre of that journey.”

Jerry Mabena: Chairman of the Board Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA)

“Tourism has always been about connection, between people, places, and purpose.
The Green Lung takes that further by connecting growth with responsibility.
This is the kind of leadership our sector needs: practical, inclusive, and forward-looking.”

Onwaba Gonyora: Executive Director, Brahman Hills

“Partnering on the Green Lung aligns deeply with our philosophy of stewardship and long-term land care. This is not just about planting trees. It is about planting legacy, restoring balance, and creating spaces where people and nature can thrive together. These trees will long outlive us. They will cast shade for future generations”

Driving ESG, ESD and SDG Alignment

The Tourism & Travel Green Lung directly contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth (through SMME development)

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production

SDG 13: Climate Action

SDG 15: Life on Land

By integrating Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) outcomes, the initiative creates a rare, practical convergence of economic inclusion and environmental stewardship.

A New Model for Tourism Leadership

As global markets increasingly demand verified sustainability practices, initiatives like the Green Lung position South Africa’s tourism sector as:

Proactive rather than reactive

Credible rather than aspirational

Inclusive rather than exclusive

The model is designed for replication across provinces and regions and ultimately creating a network of Green Lungs that collectively contribute to national climate resilience and inclusive economic growth.

Positioning Statement

“The Tourism & Travel Green Lung is a living commitment where tourism gives back to the environments and communities that sustain it. From Vergelegen to Brahman Hills, and beyond, it represents a growing movement of purpose-led collaboration, rooted in action and built for legacy.”

“As a city that has built such a strong global reputation as a travel destination, we understand very well the value that tourism holds for our economy.
SATSA, the Voice of Inbound Tourism, and Fair Trade Tourism (FTT), the Mark of a Good Holiday, have announced a strategic partnership to advance responsible tourism practices across South Africa.

The collaboration aims to enhance the competitiveness of South African tourism businesses by providing practical tools and guidance for implementing responsible tourism practices that meet growing international demands for sustainable travel experiences.

Rachel Nxele, Chairperson of SATSA’s Responsible Tourism Committee, said: “This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for sustainable tourism in South Africa. It equips our members with essential tools to meet evolving global market demands whilst benefiting local communities.”

According to Lisa Scriven, General Manager at Fair Trade Tourism, “The FTT framework and support tools offer tourism businesses of any size a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to align their operations with supplier demand. Equally important, it promotes tourism that contributes to better places to live, work, and visit.”

Key initiatives include:

Endorsement of FTT’s locally developed certification programme, aligned with international sustainability standards.

Proudly delivering and driving global standards of sustainability for hospitality and tourism in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa — 16 January 2025 — Pullman Cape Town proudly announces that it has been awarded the esteemed Green Key certification for sustainability, which is a testament to the hotel’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Willie Williams, Area Director of Sales Marketing Accor: “This achievement demonstrates the hard work and dedication of the entire hotel team, including its Sustainability Committee, which consists of representatives from every department within the hotel. This Committee, supported by Kasada, has been instrumental in implementing and driving sustainable practices that align with the rigorous standards set by the Green Key certification, which is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).”

Lopang Rapodile, ESG Manager at Kasada, emphasises the importance of continuous improvement: “We’re hugely proud of Pullman Cape Town for successfully being awarded the Green Key Certification, which is well deserved for the whole team’s focus on delivering sustainability excellence. We remain committed to strengthening the hotel’s sustainability initiatives year after year, ensuring that we continue to serve as an anchor of sustainability for the people and communities we support.”

Pullman Cape Town and its owner, Kasada, are deeply dedicated to sustainable tourism and will continue to deliver on our commitments. By achieving Green Key certification, Pullman Cape Town not only sets a benchmark for sustainability for other hospitality establishments in South Africa, but also demonstrates its dedication to preserving the environment for future generations. The hotel invites guests to join their journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

The Green Key evaluation process covers the four pillars of sustainability: sustainable management, environmental impacts, cultural impacts, and socio-economic impacts, which are confirmed by an independent third-party audit of hotel practices. Green Key rigorously evaluates and audits businesses and establishments based on the Foundation for Environmental Education’s strict environmental responsibility and sustainable operation criteria. These criteria help guide them to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set up by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, which include critical areas such as effective energy use, water management, waste reduction, and sustainability education and training.

Green Key in its Final Summary and Decision stated: “The hotel has done exceptionally well with demonstrating compliance with Green Key Year 1 Imperative Criteria.” Highlighting several commendable practices, “including the implementation of waste management practices, staff training, energy-efficient lighting, automatic shutdown, water efficient flow rates and the use of eco-label cleaning products, which align with Green Key standards.”

Some key elements of Pullman Cape Town’s sustainability initiatives that Green Key highlighted include:

Water and Energy Reduction: The hotel has installed low-flow shower heads and dual-flush toilets and has a daily leak-checking protocol. The hotel also uses a Guest Room Management system, which allows a room’s electricity to be automatically turned off when it has been vacant for more than 10 minutes. These measures have significantly reduced water consumption and energy usage, demonstrating Pullman Cape Town’s proactive energy conservation approach.

Sustainable Education, Training and Practices: Promoting sustainable practices is a cornerstone of hotel operations. Guests are encouraged to participate in reducing laundry loads, thereby conserving water, energy, and minimising waste. Comprehensive sustainability training for staff is provided to ensure they are well-versed in eco-friendly practices. This training includes water and energy conservation techniques, waste reduction strategies, and the importance of sourcing locally and seasonally. Staff members are also trained to educate and encourage guests to adopt these practices during their stay. Pullman Cape Town creates a collaborative environment for sustainable practices by involving both staff and guests in sustainability initiatives.

Plastic Reduction and Waste Management: Pullman Cape Town is committed to reducing single-use plastic throughout the property. A full-time worker from Pullman Cape Town’s partner, WastePlan, meticulously separates all waste to maximise reuse. The hotel regularly receives rebates from WastePlan, highlighting the tangible benefits of its sustainable practices.

###

About Green Key

The Green Key certification is a globally recognised standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. The Green Key high environmental standards are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits, ensuring that certified establishments consistently improve their environmental performance. Accredited by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE): Green Key – through the National Office in South Africa: The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).

Judge’s comments: We’re beyond impressed at how far this initiative has come considering it was only started in Covid times. How Many Elephants collaborates with and supports female rangers on the front line.

Judge’s comments: There are many amazing charities that focus on Africa, but what Holly has achieved in both how she presents the female ranger role alongside its challenges in an unusual and design-led way is so powerful. This is evidenced in How Many Elephants media and fundraising achievements, that has each year built on this momentum very successfully having moved from Female Ranger Day to Female Ranger Week.
