SMALL-TOWN SOUTH AFRICA IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH NEW #MYKASIMYDORPIE SOCIAL MEDIA MOVEMENT DURING TOURISM MONTH

Press Release issued on behalf of Sigma International

SMALL-TOWN SOUTH AFRICA IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH NEW #MYKASIMYDORPIE SOCIAL MEDIA MOVEMENT DURING TOURISM MONTH

JOHANNESBURG, 14 SEPTEMBER 2022 – From Scarborough in the Western Cape to Magoebaskloof in Limpopo, South Africa’s small towns will be in the spotlight this Tourism Month (and beyond) with a new marketing movement called #mykasimydorpie.

Run in conjunction with Sigma International, a specialist enterprise development/ incubation (impact) company, who is currently implementing a tourism incubator programme for The Department of Tourism, the #mykasimydorpie campaign aims to encourage South Africans to celebrate what they love about their favourite small towns.

Tourism stakeholders across the country will be participating in the pro bono campaign by sharing their top travel tips, interesting destination titbits and beautiful visuals on social media, tagged #mykasimydorpie. Travellers and locals are also encouraged to join this celebration of small-town South Africa by posting about their favourite kasi or dorpie.

“The #mykasimydorpie movement belongs to us all and as we celebrate Tourism Month this September, there’s no better time to shine a spotlight on these and celebrate the incredible diversity and depth of experiences these sometimes lesser-known and lesser-visited areas have on offer,” says Akash Singh, Sigma International Chief Executive Officer.

If you’re a local, you can get involved by adding your voice to social media on why you love your kasi or dorpie, sharing the little gems that visitors will enjoy when they visit. Keen local travellers who scour the country for special experiences can share their favourites with fellow travellers on social media, simply by tagging #mykasimydorpie.

Tourism industry stakeholders will also be using their social media platforms, websites and newsletters to promote their favourite small towns and experiences.

“We all have that town we dearly love and wish to share with the world and while this campaign aims to provide much-needed visibility for these, they really deserve to be celebrated beyond Tourism Month. We have a great deal to be proud of and hope that South Africans will share in that pride and join us in our efforts to promote small-town South Africa,” Singh concludes.
