Johannesburg, 30 April 2025 – As it celebrates 35 years as a leader in specialist risk solutions for the travel and tourism industry, SATIB Insurance Brokers (SATIB) has announced a transition. From 1 May 2025, long-serving group Exco member and SATIB Board Member Kevin Watson will step into the role of Managing Director, succeeding Dewald Cillie, who has played a pivotal role in shaping SATIB’s success over his remarkable 21-year tenure. Cillie will remain involved with SATIB in an advisory capacity while pursuing new opportunities.
This transition comes at a time when African tourism businesses are facing an increasingly complex risk landscape. Extreme weather events, shifting regulatory requirements, operational liabilities, and emerging digital threats such as cybercrime affecting online bookings are changing how businesses approach risk management.
With expertise in finance, insurance, hospitality, and tourism, Watson is well-positioned to guide SATIB through this next chapter while ensuring that clients continue to receive highly specialised solutions tailored to their unique needs.
Having served on the SATIB Board for 16 years – and previously holding senior roles at IFA Hotels & Resorts and SATSA in the tourism sector and at Board level of many Insurance Brokerages in Africa – Watson brings extensive experience that aligns with SATIB’s long-standing commitment to providing expert-led insurance solutions designed specifically for Africa’s tourism sector. His leadership marks an opportunity for growth while maintaining continuity in service excellence.
“SATIB has spent 35 years building strong relationships within African tourism because we understand that this industry requires more than just standard insurance policies,” said incoming MD Kevin Watson. “My focus will be on ensuring SATIB continues to evolve alongside our clients’ needs while maintaining our reputation as a trusted partner in risk management.”
SATIB has built its reputation by developing tailored risk solutions specific to the complexities of operating within African travel markets. Under Watson’s leadership, it remains committed to strengthening its position within key sectors such as hospitality groups, eco-tourism enterprises, safari operators, and adventure tourism businesses across Africa.
Outgoing MD Dewald Cillie reflected on his time leading one of Africa’s most specialised brokerages:
“Leading this company has been one of my greatest professional honours,” said Cillie. “I leave knowing that under Kevin’s leadership – and with our incredible team – SATIB is not only set up for continued success but is positioned to build further on its legacy as the go-to insurance partner for Africa’s dynamic tourism economy.”
As he steps down from his role after more than two decades with the company – including seven years as Managing Director – Cillie leaves a lasting legacy of leadership and dedication. His instrumental role in strengthening client advocacy during pivotal moments such as the COVID-19 crisis underscores his commitment to SATIB and the broader industry it serves. “The entire SATIB team extends its sincere gratitude to Dewald for his invaluable contributions over the years and wishes him every success in his future endeavours,” concludes Watson.
