St Helena welcomes more flights from South Africa

Additional capacity promises both convenience and flexibility for visitors to the South Atlantic Ocean Island

St Helena Tourism welcomes the announcement that Airlink is adding seasonal mid-week flights between Johannesburg and St Helena Island from 28 November 2023 until the end of February 2024.

The new midweek flights, which will be operated by Airlink on an Embraer E190 on Tuesdays every week, will complement the regular scheduled Saturday flights to St Helena on Saturdays, bringing the frequency to twice weekly.

The seasonal flights will offer passengers more capacity and flexibility to travel to the island, allowing them to opt for long weekends and shorter stays. The increases to both available seats and flight frequency also means that prospective travellers have more certainty that seats will be available at their preferred times of travel.

“St Helena is a uniquely important destination in Airlink’s network and we are privileged to be able to support the island’s economy by providing the much-needed extra mid-week peak season connectivity that enables tourism, while also promoting trade and providing a vital air bridge to the world via Airlink’s main Johannesburg hub”, said Rodger Foster, CEO & Managing Director of Airlink.

“We are delighted to offer travellers to our beautiful island more flexibility and more options to tailor their trip to St Helena. We have seen a great increase in interest from the South African market to travel to St Helena, and this additional mid-weekly flight will allow us to capitalise on that demand,” says Matthew Joshua, St Helena Government’s Head of Tourism.

Airlink previously operated seasonal mid-week flights from Cape Town rather than Johannesburg during the high peak holiday season. Work is currently underway between Airlink and the South African Civil Aviation Authority to obtain the necessary approvals to use Cape Town as a hub for flights during the summer months of November to April, beginning from 2024.

Tickets are available online, via the Airlink website at www.flyairlink.com and through all IATA travel agents.
