SATSA deeply saddened by death of a German tourist in Mpumalanga

Press Release issued on behalf of SATSA

SATSA DEEPLY SADDENED BY DEATH OF A GERMAN TOURIST IN MPUMALANGA

JOHANNESBURG, 4 OCTOBER 2022 – SATSA is deeply saddened by the death of a German tourist who was fatally wounded during an attempted hijacking which took place on the R538 in Mpumalanga yesterday.

According to a South African Police Services (SAPS) statement, four tourists were travelling to Numbi Gate and were stopped by three armed suspects driving a VW Caddy. During the incident, one of the tourists was shot and died on the scene. While no other passengers were harmed during the incident, they are receiving trauma counselling and crisis management protocols have been activated.

SAPS has launched a manhunt for the suspects and urged anyone with any information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators to immediately call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.

Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism have further offered a reward of R50,000 for information that will lead to the successful prosecution of the perpetrators of the crime.

Says Oupa Pilane, co-Chair SATSA: “As a tourism community, we mourn the tragic loss of a guest to South Africa and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends.

“We have rallied to provide immediate on-the-ground support and to find the perpetrators so that they can be brought book swiftly. We must also escalate our efforts to ensure the safety of residents and tourists in this area.”
